The National Enquirer use to cover Susan Richardson like she was the MAIN star of "Eight Is Enough" instead of just one of the many co-stars. Even after EIE went off the air, the major tabloids, like the Enquirer, Star, Globe, etc. still cover her career like she was MAJOR TELEVISION and MOVIE STAR even though she hardly appeared on anything after EIE was cancelled.
Thank you, jwk1979! I noticed the same thing back then. I always wondered why with all the people on Eight is Enough who got more face time than her, why was Susan Richardson all over the tabloids?
The answer, pure and simple, all these years later, is that Susan Richardson was what we came to call a publicity whore. Enquirer Editor-in-Chief Mike Walker explained on his radio show that for about as long as there's been tabloids, some actors have made secret deals with them for bits and pieces here and there, even with unflattering stories. They were so afraid of oblivion, they would do this to keep their names circulating.
Susan Richardson, for whatever reasons, was desparate to be a major star. One story I've heard about her several times was that at red light traffic stops, she would get out of her car (a Corvette), and offer surrounding drivers and passengers her autograph.
Living in L.A., and knowing several actors that you may have actually heard of, I know this: Just about anyone entering acting with the goal of being a star is headed for disaster. You become an actor to act, not to become some kind of symbol. Ms. Richardson is a prime example of this lesson.
There is an Eight is Enough profile of E! Entertainment's E! True Hollywood Story. On that program, it's mentioned that the staff and crew of 8IE enjoyed working on that show except for 2 people that they considered butt pains: Adam Rich & Susan Richardson. According to THS, they were very unpopular on the set.
I may not have this 100% correct, but at last report, Ms. Richardson was working as a caregiver at some type of rehab facility in rural Pennsylvania. She had horrible luck in her career, romance, finance, and substance abuse, and at one point, her reputation got so bad that she couldn't get hired.
In that E! THS episode, she admitted that she had some bad problems and threw away a small fortune.
Hopefully, she's learned from her mistakes, like we hope for anybody, and I wish the best for her, whether she tries to revive her acting career or not.
