I cannot for the life of me understand why Washington (and a few other markets for that matter) can't have a rhythmic music station similar to what they were when they signed on in 1987 or similar to New York's WKTU. I feel that there's too much emphasis on hip-hop and rap and not enough on dance music.donta1974 said:

Format Change Coming To 95.5 PGC?

The demographics of the Washington metro area have changed DRASTICALLY in the past 20 years. IMO, more favorable towards dance. Tons of immigration. There is a huge electronic music scene in the area.
A KTU style station would do great, as would a CHR/Dance (which I think we are going to see pop up all over the country in the next couple years).

A CHR/Dance would be a CHR that leans heavily towards dance. Still plays most if not all of the Top 40 chart (except plays remixes of pop/rock songs).
I think it's funny that so many people said for so long that dance music doesn't work on the radio. Then all of the sudden it becomes hot at CHR, and CHR starts seeing some of the highest ratings for the format in decades!

Also dance music isn't commercial radio friendly in LA, SF, or Chicago either considering their diverse populations. WPGC saw the profitability of being a rhythmic crossover/urban back in the 1990s (like sister stations in Hartford and West Palm) and hasn't looked back since. If anyone in this market would be willing to fill that niche would be WIHT (Hot 99.5), but likely only on weekends though...

Time to revive this thread, WPGC has been acting strange today. The following tracks have been played today, some of them several times throughout the course of today, and not just during the mixshow, but during the middle of the day, night, and AM hours.

If they would bring back the old "Love Talk & Slow Jams / The Cool Out" relationship talk format with urban adult contemporary slow jams rather the mess they play now from 10PM-2AM then this might work. They might actually go back to their old pre-1996 musical composition. I think WPGC should be urban-rhythmic crossover hybrid rather than straight urban, but the song spins need to slow down some.

Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are and Rihanna - Only Girl (In The World) have officially popped up in the station's Top 50, being played about 7 times already since Monday.

You know what is funny is their Atlanta sister station, WVEE, has recent began to spin rhythmic tracks like "Like A G6" (regular version), "Like the Way You Lie, Part II", "Gimme That" (regular version and urban bass remix). People there think that they are shifting as well. It could be just a fluke on both CBS stations part to get a bump in the PPM because both have made this move in the past.

I'd be really disappointed if it was just a fluke. These songs are good songs, and I'm glad PGC is giving them a chance. I had so many people text me yesterday telling me how surprised they were that "Like a G6" was on PGC, and they were actually enjoying it getting thrown into the mix, cause I tell you, DJ Redz has a tendency to get boring as hell sometimes during the Drive at 5, but yesterday, when they mixed in Rihanna, Black Eyed Peas, Far East Movement, it was the best mix I heard in a long time, along with the regular urban hits. I hope PGC keeps it this way at least for a little while.
Im even looking on Twitter & Facebook, and its 95% positive responses to the new music PGC has added, people are definitely noticing.

Yup! Now the only thing their is to see is if they actually stick with the sound, or if they just abandon it. I remember they tried the Rhythmic/CHR thing back in late summer/early fall of 2009, but then had completely dropped it by winter.

Ive always wished Washington DC had a rhythmic like WPOW!
I like the format tweek the problem with it is before there was no Hot995 and WPGC`s ratings may get better but they will not be number 1 and maybe not top 5 with Hot995 in the same market. If listners like this change there is no reason why CBS would not keep the sound like it is urban/chr. WKYS,WERQ, and WPGC all sounded alike the same old urban songs and i love urban radio but WPGC needed to sound slightly different. Its a welcome change for the D.C./Baltimore area. Hopefully they will keep it. There are other crossover songs that they can add as well we will see.

I don't think that would be a good idea. WPGC aired the slow jams even when it was actual rhythmic crossover targeting 18-49 years back in the early 90s. The problem with the current incarnation of the time slot is it doesn't even really air enough actual slow jams rather just some with mostly mid-tempo sexually-oriented songs. Going younger doesn't always mean play the same stuff you could hear at 6PM around midnight as well. There are number of young demo stations that air slow jams at night. Their sister stations in Hartford & West Palm do it and are just fine.
