Format Flip?

Just so you know David the only stations in East Texas that are buying the arbitron ratings are the former Gap stations. In East Texas ratings dont mean anything, and a great deal of the money that KKUS makes is NTR with concerts and live remotes. The station makes a great deal money! and has low over head. And believe me I know that KFRO and KCUL are not translators, but are used as such. No one knows more about those 2 stations than I do! I was one of the engineers for the stations for a while, and was on the air at KKUS.

And concerning classic country you will never know for certain if it will work until someone tries it in San Diego. SD is a strange market things that work there wont elsewhere and things that work elsewhere wont work there. In New York or LA the listeners would never have listened to Hudson and Bauer or Jeff and Jer, but in SD they were heroes!

And if they want to do something interesting with KUSS, run test tones so people can properly set up their stereos!

But nothing that David Eduardo or anyone else on here says matters to any of the decision makers that own these stations so all we are doing is playing armchair quarterback, the radio version!

So? ;)

All that means is that the market does not have much money. The ratings data itself is sound enough for MRC to certify the report, and is a measure of the number of people who might hear an ad message.

In any case, the issues of billing, ratings, etc., only support the conclusion that the station does OK because there are two stations dividing the contemporary country market, which, even in that oh-so-much-more-country market, is about 75% of the country listening. The other two bill about $3 together and KKUS is less than $800 k... again, that 3-to-1 ratio of contemporary to classic country even in core markets.

In East Texas ratings dont mean anything, and a great deal of the money that KKUS makes is NTR with concerts and live remotes.

Again, this argument fails to consider that we are talking about a possiblity (or not) for KUSS in San Diego, which is a highly ratings driven market. The fact that the format does not deliver in more lifestyle markets is one thing. And the fact that they have to depend on local direct is another... you can't survive at any significant level of billing with local direct and not ratings in a transactional market.

And concerning classic country you will never know for certain if it will work until someone tries it in San Diego. Your references are to diary based ratings. In the PPM, that kind of show has suffered and in the PPM country, in San Diego, has suffered. The market is 30% Hispanic, and the long TSL country got in the diary is compressed in the PPM, and there just is not enough country cume to make up for the TSL loss... it's fairly obvious that there is only room for one country station there. Of course, the fact that classic country is almost exclusive to 55+ means that even with ratings, it won't work in a transactional market as local and national agencies almost without exception don't buy 55+ radio per client instructions.

Coronado is beautiful this time of year! What station group is holding high level meetings there?

You know its always interesting to hear a corporate bean counter's point of view

Odd, but I don't identify anyone on this thread as being of that particular persuasion.

By Friday, all of this will be known. ;D

I'm guessing that other than the J-sters returning, there is no "format flip" under way after all... Or is it more of a "format swap?"
