Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2

Ha. Just saw that Fox had to back down on their pricey request for the new channel.

The frenzied rush that saw several of the country’s biggest distributors agree to carry FS1 at launch occurred only after Fox surprisingly backed off its asking price of $0.80 per subscriber per month, according to multiple high-level sources. Cablevision, Cox, DirecTV, Dish Network and Time Warner Cable agreed to carry the new, heavily promoted all-sports channel, but only at the same rate they were paying for the previous channel, Speed, which cost $0.23 per subscriber per month. Fox told the distributors that it would convert Speed into FS1 and allow distributors with existing Speed deals to carry it at Speed’s rate, or at least close to it, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the talks.

ESPN already gets upwards of $5.50 a subscriber.

Yes, they do (get $5.50 per).

They will never get more than that, and will likely get less once FS1 establishes itself.

In 5 years it's possible that a cable system could credibly part ways with ESPN if they don't receive a lower rate.

ESPN is a must carry now, but the advent of FS1 breaks the monopoly.

On COX in Connecticut Fox Sports 1 is on Digital Channel 85. You have to have a box to get the network. It's part of the TV Essential Pak which includes channels like FX, TNT, USA, Spike, Nick, TVLAND, Food Network, ESPN, etc. Fox Sports 2 is on 140. Naturally Fox Sports 1 HD is on 1085, but they don't offer Fox Sports 2 in HD. Fox Sports 2 is in the Sports & Info pak.

Like Fox Sprts Live is know time for NBCSP to do a 11pm Sports Highlight show with Dan/Bob and CBSSN change their 11pm that's good to a Highlight one to.
ESPN Levy,Van Pelt tonight and shifted Harris/John B. to 1am Sportscenter.

Yea....I dont see that happening any time soon. The 'Lights should be back in September from what I read some where.

FS1 has just popped up on my on-screen guide, replacing Speed. Mostly, it's their version of Sports Center. They've got NASCAR (probably carried over from Speed). Soccer (from their Soccer Channel). And high school football. No way, they get $5 a head for this.

I think Fox gambled and lost on trying to get the higher fee, but that doesn't mean it won't eventually get a big boost.

Fox seems commited to spending the money to make this work. They've got some baseball rights, lots of college football and NASCAR for the channel..and just added golf. They're going to go after the NBA next. If they pull that off they can probably get closer to $1 per subcriber for the channel.

Remember, Fox started the Fox News Channel by paying cable companies to carry it. Now they're getting a big rights fee from each cable company for that network. I'm pretty sure they're going to do what it takes to make this a ratings success.

Saw FOX Sports Live lastnight nothing great if you ask me. Lot more joking around. I would not compare it to SportsCenter at all.

As for the rest of the network a bunch of NASCAR to start it off. Lets see Monday how the other shows are.

My local cable company, MetroCast, had moved Speed from Digital Basic to Expanded Basic a couple years ago. All you need to get Fox Sports 1 is subscribe to Expanded Basic and have a digital receiver or dvr. The funny thing is Speed was on 280 and if you have Digital Plus, Fuel TV was on 279. Now that Speed is FS1 and Fuel TV is FS2 that means 279 is FS2 and 280 is FS1. Anyone other areas screwy like this?

FS1 will never get $5 per.

More likely, they establish themselves and get something like $2 per. ESPN drops to $3 per.

The license to print money that has been ESPN will have a less active printing press. Not today, not next month, not even next year. But in a few years, it will happen. News Corp. has the resources and is committed to cable sports. ESPN is going nowhere. They will still collect the highest fees of any cable network. It'll just be less than it is now.

Disney needs to plan for this and not react by gutting operations in Bristol when the inevitable revenue slowdown occurs. If they do that, then ESPN may not be the highest value cable network.

Did FOX Sports 1 get bumped up to basic cable anywhere? As FOX Sports 1 is still on digital cable. So if one of your TVs in your house are hooked straight to cable your out of luck. This is where ESPN wins as their on basic cable everywhere.

In the Comcast world in CA, you cannot have "basic" cable anymore. Everything is digital and requires a box/cablecard.

Its the same here in San Diego. Cox Cable covers the southern half of the city and TWC the north. We've had service with both companies over the years and everything here is now digital and requires the use of a box as well. Ken, where do you live that they still offer analog cable service?

I have Time Warner Cable in SC. I know on some TWC systems in other states their moving to only a box for all TVs. When that happens I wonder how thats going to be, going to be terrible for the restaurants with TVs.

The move to all-digital has already happened in a lot of places. I have relatives in LA, the SF Bay Area, Dallas, and NYC that all need a cable box to watch anything now. Don't worry about the sports bars, Im sure its a solved problem by now.

I can't remember the last sports bar I went into that had cable. They all have the dish.

Some of the small places that call themselves sports bars but actually are restaurants with TVs usually have cable. I'd agree all "reputable" ones have satellite.

If they want business year-round they have DirecTV. NFL Sunday Ticket is mandatory for a sports bar. The other sports packages are available on Dish and Cable.

Many bars in the west are also signing up for cable or Dish because of the Pac-12 Network, which won't be available on DirecTV in the foreseeable future, if ever.

UVerse added Fox Sports 2 in HD to the lineup today. FS2 is on 1651 with FS1 on 1652. Seems like they got the channel numbers ass backwards.

On a side note I'm too lazy to post in the other thread, it appears UVerse has dropped Current TV/AlJazera USA.
