FUTURE JOCKS: THIS IS YOUR LIFE

I just typed in Be One With The Music with various accents. It worked. They can let Ed go.

I'm convinced that one day most Radio stations will be nothing more than A computer, A satellite dish and a transmitter. We are getting there at an alarming rate.

Wow, That had all the warmth of a Cumulus executive.

Try this:

What radio could be like if the beancounters have their way.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paste this into Winamp:

http://208.127.134.84/xstream

3 streams max at a time.

It also works in Windows Media Player if you do the following:

1. Open WM Player.

2. Go to file and then open URL.

3. Paste the address in there and click ok.

4. When WM Player says: Buffering 2% complete, click on the PLAY button on WM Player.

5. Stream will play.

There's a dedication at the very end...

PS: It's supposed to be funny!

"Nothing Can Change The Shape Of Things To Come"

KFI/Los Angeles weekend gadget guru Leo LaPorte quipped that he thought about changing his act when he was a DJ, and "radio was becoming Lite Rock, Less Talk...and I was the Talk."

The truth of the matter is that a lot of us do this job, for FUN. Take it for what it's worth, and enjoy the ride. Nothing is forever :-\

The problem with that is that it's tough to make the rent and put food in your mouth when the pay is FUN. How much is the station getting paid for every commercial that runs during your shift? $50 or 60 dollars? You probably run 40 commercials per shift. The station brings in $2,000 for your four hour shift and then they are nice enough to give you sixty whole dollars of it. How generous. The station laughs all the way to the bank and then they barely give you gas money back. Doesn't that sound like a lot of Fun? WHEEEEE!!!!!!

Future jocks.... Do yourself a favor. Pick a different career that will allow you to eat. Radio isn't what it used to be. Chances are you'll be unappreciated and the pay will suck. Then the station will still have the nerve to kick you out on your ass just because they think it's time for a change.

Exactly Sky......Mark, it doesn't matter if you do it for "Fun" or not.....the fact is NO ONE gets compensated for it......actually those that do it just for fun hurt those who have to make a living out of it. The longer people keep accepting 10 dollar an hour jobs, the longer they will continue to be just that

I've yet to meet a person who is happy with only getting paid in FUN. I get offers like this all the time when I do voiceovers. We'll give you screen credit and a copy of the tape. No pay but it will look great on your resume. Guess what? I can't eat TAPE! Cough up the cash. If you can't do it than I can't help you. Don't shortchange yourself radio people. Broadcasters are getting rich while they give you scraps.

Radionut is right. It hurts the industry. Listen to some air checks from 20 or 30 years ago. Even right here in Providence we had the most polished jocks you could ever imagine. Totally professional and entertaining! DJ's with talent who could really put on a show. These days there is no show. There are unfunny 20 year olds who can only push buttons and read off a card. Some of them can barely do that. This is what you end up with when you pay your employees in FUN.

How much is the line worker at Ford or Chevrolet seeing for the cars they build? How much is the baker seeing for the pastries, bread, cakes, etc they make each day? It's Economics 101: the ownership will always make more than they are paying the employees because they are in it for a profit.....before people got into the industry, they knew (or should have) what the pay scales were like....if not, shame on them.

Jocks: "the future" is NOW

Good afternoon (evening back East there) from NAB2008.

A great big banner atop the Las Vegas Convention Center reads "Content makes cool gadgets hot."

Jocks, hosts, news people, commercial writers, ANYONE in the programming supply chain whose-work-is better/more-useful/more-engaging than what's coming-out-of-other-stations at-any-given-moment...those people will continue to be rewarded.

Heck, they'll be even MORE conspicuous, now that:
a.) so much on-air programming is cut-back/dumbed-down/syndicated/automated/cliche'd/self-centered; and
b.) audience and advertisers DON'T NEED STATIONS to hear/see programming.

100,000+ attending are here to explore what the convention program calls “new delivery, new content, new opportunities.”

As last year, there's GREAT STUFF here even before the show officially opens tomorrow morning!
Saturday/Sunday "Podcast Summit" sessions ROCKED.

Today, Mommycast.com hosts Paige & Gretchen did one helluva session, and shared in a collegial and EXTREMELY generous fashion the success story they're writing, with six-figure sponsorship deals from Dixie Cups, Purell, and other brands now flocking to new media. When you hear their work, you won't be listening to "professional announcers." You'll be hearing MOMS...connecting with other moms.

The producers of "March of the Penguins," which P&G made-noise-about early-on, credit them with 25% of the film's walk-up ticket sales.
And they did it with NO transmitter.

STATIONS: "the future" is NOW.

Notes to follow.

GO SOX.

Answer: Way more than a part time radio personality in providence! My good friend is a baker and takes home 150.00 a night and works 5 hours. So, you do the math. That is a horrible example...of course the owners make more, but these hourly wages are an insult, and its time jocks stopped doing it for FUN. If you wanna do that, get an internet station

Exactly! Some people do it for the fame. But it means little these days when I see people get 100,000 hits on youtube each day. You can now have Worldwide fame from your bedroom which easily surpasses any local fame you are going to have on a local radio station. So the only reward left would be the Money. But now most people in radio can't even get that! So what the hell is left?

I saw the light when companies started paying me $200 for a one minute commercial. Even when companies started offering me $50 to record a 30 second outgoing message on their answering machine. Common sense told me that if I can make this kind of money for a minute or two of my time..... why am I going to sit in some drab radio station for hours on end for $8 bucks an hour? WHY?

Are we talking a market like Providence? The ones worth higher salaries are probably making them, although probably still not as much as they would like.If paychecks were fatter all around then many of those now making less money would not keep their jobs.

No one ever said that you HAVE to do radio, for a living. Instead of crying about the current situation, go out and get a real job. I decided in 1981 that this business wasn't going to be the one for me, so I got on with my life. With the current state of the industry, how can radio broadcasting schools accept tuition money without being totally up-front about uncertain future employment possibilities, in a truthful way ?

People kill me talking about the trashy state of radio..My answer is go somewhere and hide under a rock until the downward spiral is over..Are you going to do that? NO! So, why complain? It's a job and many people working in this field (such as myself) are satisfied with the working conditions..Take it for what it is and don't think so high and mighty of yourself..You can be replaced. Usually the least talented/skilled workers are the first out and this goes for radio and any other industry...Can't make rent? Get a part time job or leave radio altogether, no big sweat..If somebody painted a big rosy picture of the radio biz when u first started out and you've yet to reap some success then take a close look at you and your craft. Most importantly, it's life so get over it.

By the time the downward spiral is over you will probably be out of a job too. Tell us your name so that we'll be able to verify if I'm right.

Your comment is true...FOR EVERY INDUSTRY. Take a look at the business page...the news is bad EVERYWHERE. Do the best that you can, ride the wave for as long as you can, and then do something else, if you have to. What else can you do about it ? We all love pity, at one time or another, but you have to eventually dust yourself off, and get on with life. You should be happy for JB, not waiting for the other shoe to fall, at that station. What kind of website is this ? Does misery really love company ? Is the jealousy really that strong between people employed in radio, and those who are not (wannabees) ???
