FUTURE JOCKS: THIS IS YOUR LIFE

Now Mark isn't going to have the heart to tell you he makes $50.00 an hour as a weekender.

Seriously, this is nothing new. The conversation might be different if we were talking full-timers making this kind of money, but for part-timers or even those starting out in their careers in the boonies it's the way things are. There was a time when unemployed Providence jocks willingly went to work at the AM music stations in the state for a lot less money just to stay on the air while they looked for real work. Radio is just one of those fields that goes hand in hand with words like "sacrifice" & "passion". It isn't the only one. It may not be right, but it won't change.

Yes, that's just the way it is...and it still amazes me at how people whine and cry about it. There's nothing that we can do about it...sort of like complaining about the cost of gasoline, or home heating oil. There are just a fraction of the stations left, that were around 20 years ago. That means fewer places to work, fewer opportunities, etc. It's just a fact of life. More than anyone, I wish it were like the old days, but those days are gone. Times have changed, and Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale are not walking through that door :)

Very true, but when they didn't walk through the door, neither did the fans (listeners).....it wasn't until they SPENT for quality that the fans, (listeners) returned.

Someday the tide will turn.

Radio..before posting something like that, make sure of your facts...do you realize that last year was they only averaged 47 less people than the year before whereas they averaged 800 fewer fans less the year before (the year PRIOR to going a league worst 18 in a row in the L column!?!) While yes, they are coming in droevs at this point (and can you blame them?) most of their spending (or lack of) was tied to bad decisions made by Rick Pitino and ML Carr and until theuy could get out from underneath the bad contracts signed (hello, Vin Baker), they couldn't spend the money they are now....no real parallel to radio; but if you are comfortable with it....

You are certainly right.....the vin baker contract was horrible huh....almost as bad as alton lister!!....hahaha.....i could type better comparisons, but i'm not gonna debate the issue anymore. I'll just continue battling for jobs with people willing to work cheap

To paraphrase Fleetwood Mac: "YOU make radio fun."

Lots of INWARD focus in this thread.
No question that the money is meager "for doing a shift."

But come up with something special, and it'll be a seller's market for what you do.

THAT is the clear consensus here @ NAB2008.

Success now is LOTS-less-about devices than who-or-what will be the next killer content wrinkle.

In 1922, radio was an experiment.
It settled-into "The Lone Ranger," "Superman," Jack Benny, etc.
When that stuff moved to TV, and Baby Boomers were teens, radio went Top 40.
When that moved from 63WPRO to 92ProFM, Rush Limbaugh-type radio gave AMs a new act.
Now, radio needs "a Sudoku."
Will it be you?

If so, you'll be making lots more than a-couple-dollars-an-hour.
Meantime, the station paying you a-couple-dollars-an-hour is funding your R&D.
