GLENN BECK COMING TO CAPE COD

Funny you should use the terms "mental disorder" and "Glenn Beck" in the same reference.

Actually, he's a pretty smart cookie. There's lots of money to be made in talk radio with over-the-top nonsense. Like the "fact" that Obama will make you insure your pets under the new health care plan.

Or how about these whoppers:

I guess some people are entertained by such silliness, and some people actually believe it.

To me, it is all comic book stuff.

I have said it many times, talk radio is to real political analysis as TV wrestling is to real sports.

That reminds me of the humor from my grade school years; many, many years ago. Remember to story about the motorist who had a flat in front of the insane asylum. He was careless as he changed the tire and his lug-nuts fell into the storm sewer. The motorist was going nuts until a patient call out to him through the fence: Steal one nut from each of the other three wheels. With three nuts you can on this wheel and four on the other three, you can ease your way on into town and the repair shop. According to the story the motorist says: Wow, you're pretty smart. What are you doing in THERE!

And the patient said: I'm not in here for being DUMB.

I read the other day that Beck has built a communications machine that is grossing about 32 million dollars a year for him. Yes, he's one smart cookie. So I guess that discussion of settled and off the table.

Now what we are left with is discussing whether mentally he has five lug-nuts on all four wheels.

Actually, the idea that the country is somehow more divided than usual is a myth. US history is repleat with political divisions which make today's contretempts seem downright mild by comparison. The only difference is that back before electronic mass media, disagreements were subject to stories in perhaps a dozen newspapers and three or four magazines which really mattered. Now, the same redundant story is tweeted, blogged, cable newsed, network newsed, radio and cable talkshowed, and internet chatted twelve thousand times, making it only seem more important or devisive.

You and I cannot debate this claim and either one of us walk away the documented winner.

But here's my take:

I was doing talk radio in the 1960s.

Because I was doing talk I was welcomed into John Birch society events of that era.

I was doing some lobbying in the 1970s.

I can't give you an assessment of what things were like in 1921 or 1845 or 1798 but I can tell you that my personal biased observation is that the political climate of our country has become toxic in the last 50 years. If it continues we will all need to carry Geiger Counters around with us to avoid radio-active contamination of the soul.
