Actually, the idea that the country is somehow more divided than usual is a myth. US history is repleat with political divisions which make today's contretempts seem downright mild by comparison. The only difference is that back before electronic mass media, disagreements were subject to stories in perhaps a dozen newspapers and three or four magazines which really mattered. Now, the same redundant story is tweeted, blogged, cable newsed, network newsed, radio and cable talkshowed, and internet chatted twelve thousand times, making it only seem more important or devisive.
