Greensboro

Has Greensboro radio become so boring that nothing happens worthy of posting on the boards. When was the last time there was a post regarding most anyting in the Greensboro market. Maybe we need to bring back Tom Collins so you'd have something to write about.

We got the Radio Old Timers Luncheon the first Thursday of every month at J&S Cafeteria in High Point (1 PM). That's where there's a lot of local market discussion and memories are kicked around.

The only action seems to be in Hip Hop stations and members of that genre don't seem to post on these boards....Other than that, name 1 thing worthy of talking about....

There use to be a spark to the presentation of radio and that was not to very long ago but I am sad to say it is really boring now. Sad to know that a market the side of Greensboro can be so poorly operated.

Never mind the fact of how metros are lumped up together now for the sake of clustering from the corporations. Since when did the Triad become the Greensboro market? It seems that Winston Salem, which is almost as large as GSO, as well as High Point, which is in the top 7 cities in NC, would at least get a mention, but no. Bottom lining everything and moving stations into cluster markets, that has really been a sore spot in the industry. The word "Cluster" seems to fit the situation.

Rest of the Eastern Seaboard & on the national level this is known as the Greensboro market, even though it does encompass Winston-Salem/High Point. I think it's just easier to say Greensboro.

it's that old SMSA thang:
Standard Metropolitan Statistical Area.
ex:Johnston County counts in the Triangle.
the Feds say: take your Lumps and Like it.

Nothing the Feds have ever done has ever made everyone happy, or even made sense to everyone.
That's just the way it is. [/almost Cronkite]

One of the problems is that ever since WTQR was the last to leave in around 2000, no commercial FMs have studios in Winston-Salem. I'm not even sure WSJS does. WPOL (which according to the Journal lists of high school sports broadcasts, DOES have an FM signal at 103.5) simulcasts on WKEW, so the studios could be either place. WEGO and the non-commercial FMs (and WBFJ-AM) are all that is left. Did 1500 AM ever come back?

1500 is on, with 140 watts. WPOL's studios are in winston salem, all thats in greensboro for WKEW is the tower and a funky stl dish downtown that passes close to freeman mill road.

The market definition hasn't changed in 20+ years. The market has, and is called Greensboro-Winston Salem-High Point. And the government's definition of a metro is largely different than a radio market definition. This is not some conspiracy for the "big corporations."

That's night power! Can anyone hear that?

WEGO, when it was WTIX, also had night power during the day and I couldn't even hear a clear signal in some parts of the city.

they have to protect WFED (the old WTOP) out of DC, they will never have night time power
then there is WEAL 1510 the first adjacent in Greensboro and WLOE 1490 in Mayodan also first adjacent

refer to this --> http://www.radio-locator.com/info/WSMX-AM
and this --> http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/amq?list=0&facid=24682

I remember WSMX with a directional antenna, 10 KW (D) and 1 KW during critical hours. When did they drop power and go non-directional? Someone mentioned them having to protect 1490 WLOE in Mayodan. WLOE actually is in Eden and is operated out of Mayodan with co-owned WMYN. WSTP in Salisbury also is on 1490 and is even closer to WSMX than WLOE.
