History of 96rock DJs

I think Boomer(Steve Sutton) who used to work for Power 99 and Star 94, now for Y106.7. I think he used to work for 96 Rock, I do not know what shift it was.

I remember Willard either getting fired or quiting 96Rock. Then he returned to 96Rock after a few years. I just cannot remember the years that this happpened.
I also remember John Boy from early 1980s leaving 96Rock to go to a station in Houston.

I would llove to see a website created about 96Rock. I just dont have the computer skills to do such a thing.

I think Bob Bailey spent some time at 96Rock before Z93 went from Top 40 to Classic Rock

Steve Sutton did work at 96 Rock. But he was a different Steve Sutton, not the one who's Boomer.

Greg Clarkson hosted the Darkside from Mid-5:30am on 96rock during the early and mid-nineties. He used to play a full cd at 3am every morning. I'll never forget my first night on the air at 96, when he showed up with a beautiful blonde. During my first break, she walked into the booth completely naked. I stammered something lame about radio being a non-visual medium and went to spots.

Come to think of it, there were often naked women around the KLS studios during the late night hours. And a strange, pungent, smokey smell often wafting from the booth when Ayo was working. Sort of like burning oregano?

Bladerunner had an incredibly entertaining show on the 7-mid shift until he got thrown in jail a few times and eventually got canned for playing an obscene song about Tipper Gore by (Warrent, I think? Who? I don't remember.) That was also mid-nineties. Anyone remember his bit "Marta-bating?" Alan Ayo took that shift. Ayo also hosted the Electric Ballroom with Alex Cooley on Sunday mornings, and the Peach Jam.

Jools never really clicked personally with the rest of the Wake Up Crew. Chris and Rad both didn't like her much, if I recall, and she was somewhat of a primadonna. Trivia: ZZ Top's "Legs" was supposedly written about her. She used to date Billy Gibbons. Apparently, she had a dime, all of the time.

Part-timers during the early and mid-nineties included Mike Alston, Matt Walsh, Steve Maple, Andy Mendello, Greg Kaiser, Delia Rae Porter, Brian Greathouse and more I'm forgetting about.

I'm sure you guys mentioned Beth Kepple, but I must say she was probably one of the best solo jocks ever- male or female. She was a pro!!!

You're right- Beth "Chesty" Kepple was great. I think of her more in her "full time" role at WKLS while I was there, which was as music director.

I also forgot to mention Kevin Zeppelin, who was the traffic guy from 89-95 or so.

I think Ode To Tipper Gore was the song by Warrant. Written in respose to the PMRC hearings.

I had heard that Legs by ZZ Top was about Lona Love not Jules.

Tim Andrews use to talk about Alan and/or Bladerunner using the studio for sexual activites.

I do know where some of the former 96Rock djs are nowadays. Seems like fair amount of them are M.I.A.-missing in action.

You're right. It was Warrent's "Ode to Tipper Gore," which wasn't really a song at all.... just about a minute of concert bits of them spewing profanity.

No, "Legs" was about Jools. I heard it several times, and I remember Billy Gibbons alluding to it in an interview with Kaedy Kiely once.

Alan and Blake (Bladerunner) were not the only ones. Clarkson had his share of good times... as did some of us part-timers. Hey- ya gotta have something to do in the middle of a mid-5am shift!

Actually both Steve Suttons worked at 96rock over the years. Boomer was Randy Sutton on the air. Did mid days on 96rock AM as well as other PT and fill in shifts.

Mark McCain, Steve Mitchell-Mornings
The guy that did the character voices for all the bits on the morning show was one of the best ever. I know someone will remember his name.
--------------------------------------------------
I don't know his real name but he went by Popeye on the air. Mark & Steve took Popeye with them to St. Louis. They didn't last long there, but Popeye survived and stayed in St. Louis. Heaven only knows where he is now.

You're right, he was one of the best ever, right up there with Jim Gossett who used to do the Newsmaker Line on Kimmer's show on WGST. Last I heard, Gossett was doing the morning show on Kicks.

I remember Blake calling me one night to play my "Perfect Album Side", it was pretty cool. I got to introduce the songs on the radio, plus some Turtles coins and a free pizza at Mellow Mushroom....good times.

Man, what a trip - reading some of these names. I have fond memories of that period of Atlanta radio.

I know many, if not most of those names just from listening.
I'm a little clearer on the history of Z93 from 1993-1995 - the span in which I worked there.
