History of 99x

Steve Craig is doing a good job playing back some of the old memories of 99x. Is seems wierd to me that they would stop after 14 years to do a week of History and talking about the new chapter of 99x. The new chapter is starting with 2 out of towners with Leslie Fram. It will at least be interesting for a day. Hopefully they will do something good enough to bury DAVE-FM. ???

Oh I can't give away secrets! I love the fact that they were wearing masks this morning with a guard standing outside of the studio door forcing Steve into the aux. studios.

What are they some top secret project? Wouldn't want Rodney Ho to bust the case wide open?

No disrespect to Rofney intended.

I've found the 'History of 99X' thing a bit depressing. It reminds me just how relevant 99X used to be and what a shell of itself the station has now become.

Deadman, please don't think I'm being antagonistic, because this is an honest question I would really like the answer to:

Why are you so passionate about wanting DaveFM to do poorly?

I can answer that for you. He wants it to fail so the Opie and Anthony and Toucher and Rich can come on their white horse and save the day. Of course this combo has not exactly lit up the ratings at their current station Boston Rocker WBCN.

Exactly, actually NEITHER show has caught fire yet, O and A since they've come back and as for Toucher and Rich what would make you think that if they flipped it to a Free FM that tthey would be put on it?. They have done nothing in Boston yet as you've said, they have their hands full with one market let alone worrying about syndication. Whenever Ive heard them it's been a twenty minute break trash talking the competitor, so far I havent been impressed. O and A are really riding on their reps now, they're not doing any bits per se, its just them blabbing about whatever is in the news which is still better than a lot of shows but they have not raised the numbers at Free Fm in New York yet either so any talk of how great it would be to hear O and A in ATL is a bit premature.

Why do I want DAVE to crash?
Personally I still like the people at 99x and I would like to see them do 90's alternative and bring back the good music they forgot.
I like the people at the Buzz and I want them to keep rocking.
DAVE is a bad version of JACK and JACK sucks [EDIT]
As for O&A: everything takes time... O&A is growing. Give them another book or two.

[EDIT=vulgarity.]

O & A sounds like the Reg Guys. riffing on the news not many bits. O & A hasn't even done much on 92.3 in NY. Remember their resumes are made up of Boston and NY stints.

...But screw the people who work at Dave, huh? [EDIT]. If Dave went away, all those people unemployed would make you happy? Because they somehow would deserve it for working at a station that is, as you say, "a bad version of Jack?" They're people with jobs, for God's sake. With bills and families and everything else all the people you "like" at the radio stations you "like" have to worry about. It's such a shame they weren't prescient enough to find employment at a station that meets with your approval. What are you going to do? Call them all personally, if and when a day comes that they no longer have jobs at Dave, to tell them of their stupidity for choosing to work there?[EDIT]

[EDIT=personal attacks.]

Yeah I really thought his whole argument was somewhat insensitive to the people at Dave. I do think you have to remember that there are lives involved, if you dont like Dave take it off your presets and shut up about it, go get XM and get your rocks off listening to O and A since you dont have to pay extra for them now, oh thats right they tried to charge $2 surcharge and couldn't get enough of the millions of members of the O and A army to sign up for their show so they had to give it away with the regular Xm subscription. Another thing to remember: for every station O and A are put on they are replacing a morning show that has bills to pay but they dont care, they're millionaires now and they seem to have forgotten what it was like to be hungry and just scraping by in radio, that bums me out about them.

It's not fair to say that because someone is advocating a format change, that they wish that all of the people at that station will lose their jobs. The reality is that if a new format takes off at it has the potential to create more jobs in terms of sales, promotions, etc than a station that's puttering in the basement.

I also think that it's unfair to say that criticizing a format is calling anyone stupid except the person who made that decision to put the format in place at WZGC. You can put the best on air and programming talent on a bad format, and it'll struggle. Just because the staff at Dave failed to make lemonade out of lemons doesn't mean that they're stupid.

No. I don't advocate people getting fired. The reality is that radio is very dog eat dog.
Stations filp and/or people get fired all the time. 99x has heritage and to me that still means something.
The Buzz is a current trend setting station. I think most people would be in agreement there is 1 or 2 too many
rock stations. Atlanta doesn't have enough rock listerners to support 92.9 DAVE, 96rock, 97.1 The River, 99x, 105.3 the Buzz.

Were you upset when people lost their jobs when Z93 filpped to DAVE? Did you write and protest?
Seriously, welcome to reality. If a station under performs, usually they go away (exception 'GST).
If that makes me an ass, so be it. My one note rant about bringing quality entertainment back to radio is my deal.
If you want an IPOD station, go and support there advertisers. Tell them you listen to DAVE and heard their commerical.
Call them everyday. Get an arbitron diary and write down you listen 24/7.

If you want an honest opinion, here's one - 99x has sucked for most of 2006 until recently.
Steve Craig is doing an excellent job of put together the right mix of music.
The Buzz is doing great and their summer trends are kicking serious ass.
The music is smoothing out nicely and they are gaining a huge fan base.
Kudos to Chris Williams and crew.

DAVE fired Barnes and their afternoon guy. The want to be all music based with less personality.
Like other stations in the country that format doesn't really work. People want DJ's on their radio station, they want personality.

So I don't want screw the people at DAVE. The management has screwed them over already.

I agree with you that going toward more music is a step in the wrong direction. If I want more music, then I'll carry a pack of CDs or my iPod. When I listen to radio, I want to hear someone who is trying to connect with their listeners. I want to hear someone who can be a "friend", after a fashion. Someone who can make themselves and what they say as compelling as the music they're playing. DJs (personalities?) are the biggest difference between radio and my iPod.

That's my 2...

Then again were you here beggging for the death of Z93 too? that's the whole point man since you're the guy who has been begging for cbs to "put Dave out of it's misery" so you can hear O and A in Atlanta, that is something you cant deflect onto other people by criticizing their posts criticizting yours. Sorry.

All I am saying is if you like Dave - going out and support it wholeheartly.
Keep people like me from getting what I want to see.
They got voted for Best Rock Station in Atlanta on accessatlanta.com.
105.3 the buzz got voted best rock station as well....

Promos this morning for Monday's show: 'The New Morning X, with <bleep>, <bleep>, and <bleep>.' Could they really be getting the band back together with Barnes, Leslie & Jimmy? Sort of an everything that's old is new again strategy -- let Buzz have the young hipsters and focus on those of us that grew up with the Morning X but now have careers and disposable income?
