HOLIDAY PPM NUMBERS

3WS #1 with maybe the highest overall number I've ever seen (a 13-share 6+).

104.7 in two months lost nearly 50% of its audience. KDKA is beating them pretty soundly (although the 25-54's are very likely a different story).

It actually is rather hilarious to hear WPGB tout "Pittsburgh's news-talk" and then give a lineup where the only host based in Pittsburgh is Jim Quinn, or the promo that talks about Pittsburgh's news coming at the top and bottom of every hour (which IS true, between 6 a.m. and 6:05 p.m. weekdays, even though a lot of the time it's whatever the top Pennsylvania Associated Press story is in a given hour ... and a lot of the time it has nothing to do with the Pittsburgh area).

Still, I think someone at Clear Channel noticed.

I presume "Pittsburgh's news" is still originating from Cleveland. :D

As with last time, these can't be cheery numbers for CC. 3WS has a great number which will be gone
in 30 days. WDVE is in the 7s, Kiss in the 6s, WPGB in the 4s, WXDX in the 3s and WBGG probably is
behind Frankie Day again. All of these (except for 970) are way off from previously established highs.

And it looks like KDKA is on a roll. If they did something about the paid programs on weekends, they
might do even better.

On count one, yes ... still including the voice of an Ohio news legend, Tom Moore, by the way.
On count two, WBGG behind Frankie Day again? That's funny. (Says something about Frankie's endurance, too.)
On count three, fully agree, but at least KD is back to doing weekend local news.

Just so you know, in the middle of the previous decade WBGG once did a 1.1 with Tunch and Wolf hosting a morning show and Stan Savran (I think) in middays. So it could be said they are well of their high, too.

I am surprised about KDKA but not shocked. Jim Graci is a good program director and very personable, which has often been something that has been lacking at KDKA.

I just don't think WDVE is that good anymore. The other day I tuned in for a bit and heard them making fun of Terry Bradshaw.

I don't know. Does the classic rock station in San Francisco make fun of Joe Montana? Would the DJs not be lynched if they did?

Pittsburgh Dad has replaced Stanley P. Kachowski. Is there really any difference? It's the same bit.

Are they still trying to mix in today's rock with Neil Young?

In response to DVE, at least they're trying. It may be too late, though. That 60 year old in Turtle Creek just doesn't really care about anything new, and has probably spent the last decade telling his kids that the new stuff sucks. Tough position. And with many conservative talk stations, the whole format has morphed into a clown-like image. Being the punchline even in mainstream entertainment. Again, tough position.

Re: Kdka AM

There was a stretch of bad weather in the Holiday period and also some big events like the Newtown shooting, which I would guess increased their numbers. It's just about the only station that you can tune to for breaking news, traffic, etc.

I also think 104.7 suffered an election hangover. The so-called right-wing nuts tuned to 1020 so that they could actually talk about the election before running out to stock up on more AR-15s and ammo, then heading down to the bunker to avoid the black helicopters.

Their numbers were rising steadily before this book and those events.

Gee. According to you I like formats that have morphed into clown like images.

I will say to 44 I haven't gone into my bunker yet.

Regardless, I have heard rock stations in other markets. Now, maybe I just am rejoicing because I'm hearing something different, but I don't know.

I'm a big AC/DC fan, that's no secret. The other day I am in a different market and I hear a station that has AC/DC in their playlist but also with a lot of modern stuff that I had heard but really hadn't been that familiar with. Some of the modern stuff I didn't like- nobody is going to like every song on a station's play list.

But I liked enough of it that I kept listening.

But what I heard was a station that was willing to take chances. I heard Pantera, which would get you banned from calling if you suggested it on the Electric Lunch, let alone heard in the every day rotation. Pantera is hardly contemporary, the song they played was from 1992 I believe.

But all I can tell you is it worked. The station got set on my dial and I can't get "High Noon, Your Tomb!" out of my head (it's a lot less scary of a lyric that you would think).

It made me enjoy rock radio again.

But no, at DVE we get The Clarks.

Blah.

Clarke, you are absolutely right on all accounts! Well said!

No I haven't, but if you force something down people's throats enough eventually they will have to swallow.

It's also my guess that those patrons had their ribs with mild sauce.

The Clarks draw multiples of the crowds that come out for name acts like 38 Special and Little Big Town.... they're bigger than Donnie Iris n'at.....

Thanks. Just stating the obvious. I'm sure the 25-54 picture is rosier for CC, but if those were my
numbers, I would not be celebrating.

Is there any chance they convert 104.7 to sports talk and take on The Fan?

I would love to see CC move 970 ESPN to 104.7.

That alone wouldn't do it. They'd either have to add Madden or reunite Savran and Junker to create some buzz and -- more importantly -- a destination show.
