HOLIDAY PPM NUMBERS

Bland? BLAND? :D

To call Brian Johnson bland is to call Cajun food mild. It is to call Jesse Helms liberal. It is to call the night bright.

He is many things. Bland is not one of them.

Well, here's the issue with DVE, as Boss said earlier. They are #1 and bill tons of money.

At some point they do need to get it younger, but it will be part of a re-tooling of the entire mix of Pittsburgh stations.

The whole concept of an FM sports station raises all kinds of interesting opportunities, because I could actually see CC doing that on 105.9 since Madden and the Pens are already there. Then you morph DVE and the X together musically into something that sounds like 98 Rock in Tampa, which crushes in adult demos and would be right up your alley, Pratte. 3WS is still there to address the classic hits/ classic rock crowd, it could be tweaked to take the sting out of the change for an older DVE listener.

Then you move Rush and company to 970 and you have 104.7 left over for something aimed at 25-54 females, some sort of Hot AC or even country.

It would be risky, but as I said I think I sense an undercurrent of things brewing.....

Excellent post. CC would have already flipped the X if it wasn't for the Pens and Madden. Alternative has disappeared from almost everywhere. Their ratings have been poor for sometime. I wonder what they would be if you took away the sports content.

Don't forget that WXDX offers a certain amount of format protection to WDVE, as does 3WS. They're
both flankers, although 3WS is successful on its own, and had to make the move from oldies because
of the demographic pressure.

Alternative isn't even called alternative anymore. It's "indie" rock.

And it is unlistenable.

The thought occurred, however.

When does an FM switch to Disney and children's radio?

Because I just realized that WTAE, or News Talk 1250, essentially morphed into WPTT in the last decade with Lynn Cullen and Doug Hoerth. No breaking news there.

But it could be argued WEAE, or ESPN 1250, essentially morphed into The X with Tim Benz and Mark Madden. I realize The X was already around then, and some could say that Benz and Madden were essentially just picking up on the vibe laid down by The X and Alan Cox years ago.

But it's so much the same station. Somewhat disturbing, in fact, that the supposedly cutting edge station designed to attract Pittsburgh's youth would actually be recycling a sports station from 2000, let alone basing their playlist around the same style of rock that peaked around 1994.

So what station flips to Disney in 2020?

In 2020 the FM band will be become the new AM band as people start switching to the new neural implant technologies that came out shortly after the government announced the existence of the crashed Roswell UFO.

I don't think it does, unless FM becomes as devalued as the AM band has been in recent years. The
format doesn't pull ratings (even with Arbitron parameters extended to 6+), and it is not monetized
locally. (What good it does for Disney on the national level, only Disney knows.)

Disney has been in the process of selling its Radio Disney O&Os and moving toward an online model
instead. I'm sure 1250 is for sale at the right price. There have been a few Radio Disney FMs, but I
don't believe any of them have done any better than their AM counterparts.

Even JenniRadio, the format run by a 12-year-old in Albuquerque, has sold the AM station and gone
online.

I think children's radio is almost a dead issue except for specialty shows like Saturday Light Brigade
(which is on the weekend, more mass appeal, and correctly, on public radio).

I checked out JenniRadio very briefly. I actually think she's 16.

But maybe that proves this business ain't rocket science after all.

Maybe my opinion on what I like to hear on a playlist and what a PD does is just that, and really is just a matter of taste.

The web site says 14. I believe she was 12 when she started the station.

In the end, everything is an opinion, including the listeners' opinion. Here's the question to address:
Is it an informed opinion?

Although there is a lot of science that goes into it, radio isn't rocket science. Play songs that people
like, be first (if possible), be better than the competition, be visible, have fun. All the rest is finesse
and technique.

The majority of the X's music is from the grunge era. They're nothing more than DVE from the 1990s. It would be nice if they would at some point really try to be a current alternative/indie station.

Well worth a couple of hours of your time if you see it on Netflix or in the library.
Among other things it features Barry McGuire in the role of.....a hippie musician (now THERE'S a stretch!!) :D
