HOLIDAY PPM NUMBERS

Speculation is fun.

One mportant question is, has the conservative talk bubble burst? The country does seem to be more
liberal at the moment than in previous years, as if the Obama administration opened the gates on this
a little. If that is the case, WPGB might be in trouble. A revitalized KDKA wouldn't help things.

That said, I don't know if a city the size of Pittsburgh could support two sports stations. I also believe
that two FM sports outlets with the Steelers on neither of them would be at a disadvantage; CC could
always move them over, of course, but they're on the mothership for a reason.

And while we're on this subject, will the new CBS Sports Radio Network surface anywhere? I believe
CBS is at the ownership limit here between both radio and TV, but there's nothing to stop them from
clearing it elsewhere. 1250 might be a good place.

A CC sports talker on FM wouldn't need Steelers pbp. CC could put the Penguins there and do well. The Pens are hot, they attract a great younger demo and will provide seven to eight months of programming in a normal year.

Is there any chance they convert 104.7 to sports talk and take on The Fan?

I've actually heard that rumor....

I doubt it:

Unless Rush does something stupid, quits, or dies, (CC / Premier / EIB) will clear his show in every market possible. If KDKA would pick Rush up, then CC could go against KDKA-FM in sports with 104.7. Sports bills an amazing amount of money verses 6+ ratings. I would not be surprised if KDKA-FM 3.1 (6+) bills almost as much as WPGB 4.0 (6+). Nationally CBS Radio is going sports talk in every market it can, so why would CBS help CC get into the sports talk game?

Yes, I have, too. And, from a good source within the CC building. That's why Jay Bohannon was let go and Greg Henson brought on board. Don't know what they're waiting for regarding a format flip. It's been a few months now since Henson has been onboard.

Does KDKA-FM HD3 carrying CBS Sports Radio suffice until CBS finds someone that isn't in the HD ranks? Just wondering.

Or the conservative talk radio audience REALLY gets fired-up as Obama gets
more of what he wants and makes them mad as hell. It could cut either way.
At the moment I agree they're a little shell-shocked.

If this does happen somebody will snap up Limbaugh in a heartbeat.
But I think their other shows could be in a bit of trouble. Quinn and Rose in particular.
Just hard to see where else they would fit locally.

Best thing I can say for KDKA is that they've somehow succeeded in getting the chiropractor
to quit being rude to callers.

HD is insignificant.

Move the conservative talk to 970 (CC just moved a conservative talker back to AM in San Diego, so there is some precedent for this)... you put Rush right next to KDKA on the dial, it won't get the numbers he gets on FM, but it will certainly multiply 970's current 0.4 several times over, and sports on 104.7 will make more money over the next couple of years than the conservative talk would.

No I haven't, but if you force something down people's throats enough eventually they will have to swallow.

It's also my guess that those patrons had their ribs with mild sauce.

The Clarks draw multiples of the crowds that come out for name acts like 38 Special and Little Big Town.... they're bigger than Donnie Iris n'at.....

So the fact they are bigger than .38 Special (hardly the biggest act of their day), Donnie Iris (two songs from 30 years ago), and Little Big Town (whoever they are) and are playing, not nationwide tours, but RIB FEST means DVE should build their station around them?

Rather than let your comparison stand, estimates from a couple of my friends at DVE are that the Clarks' ribfest shows pull 20- 30,000 people, easily 4-5 times what anyone else gets.

DVE is far from "built around" the Clarks. They play 4 or 5 songs max, in regular rotation I'd venture to say they play more AC/DC. The station is still based on the usual Classic Rock suspects, Pink Floyd, Boston, Rush etc.

And by the way, Little Big Town is a fairly popular country band, one of many who were heavily influenced by a decidedly non-country act, Fleetwood Mac. They did a CMT Crossroads show with Lindsey Buckingham a couple of years ago that was very good.

The Clarks are very popular. One thing I can assure you about CC: their radio stations are carefully
researched. They don't make a habit of playing songs or artists that people don't like.

Q should go all 80s.

I would love to see an all 80s station here
in the burgh. Are there any all 80s formats
that still exist?

Just a few, and not doing well these days. Several broadcasters, including Clear Channel, tried to launch variants of the 80s format, but were met with failure from the start because of how they were narrowing in on one musical genre of that decade (Pop or Rock) instead of including the others.

As someone who graduated from high school in 1981 and college in 1985 I can say with authority: the 80's sucked musically.

Especially if all you had to listen to was mainstream Pittsburgh radio.

I disagree.

But, then again, what do I know? 30,000 people at Rib Fest think I have no taste.

You know, interesting thing about The Clarks. I remember one day meeting some women before a Guns and Roses concert during their Buckethead era.

They had never really heard of GNR- as incredible as that sounded.

"Oh, what do you listen to?"

"The Clarks!"

Uh, okay.

I can honestly say I have never, ever heard The Clarks played on any station but WDVE.

Now, I don't know. Maybe in a world where the '80s sucked musically they think The Clarks are better than GNR.

But they think that nowhere else.

Actually I think that's Q92.9's current format....

Pratte... you are correct, the only other station on the planet, to my knowledge, that plays the Clarks is Bob Stevens' 103.1 WKVE.

But it's not about them being "better" than some other artist, it's about them being local. And say what you will about DVE musically, they are not just a jukebox like most other classic rock stations. They understand the market and their audience, and that is a big reason the numbers are what they are.

Yep, the music was so bad that B-94 only had an 11 share.

Much of the music doesn't hold up today (I'd be happy never to hear Boy George again) but don't
confuse your opinion or musical tastes, whatever they may be, with the truth of the issue. You're
right about one word: mainstream.

That would be an interesting, if not very highly rated, format. You could play the Osmonds, Bobby
Sherman. and the DeFranco Family, for starters. Maybe ten percent of the audience wants to hear
them, but you'd have a lock on cuming that ten percent.

In practicality, it is not easy to find a song that the audience truly hates. One that I remember on
96KX was "Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick" by Ian Dury and the Blockheads, which tested through
the basement and down into the storm cellar.
