Houston area radio notes (update thread)

This morning TU filed for a second aux site for KAMA located on the roof of the Univision building near 610 and the SW Freeway. 2kw @ ~41 meters. Assume this is because the current aux site is off the air or on greatly reduced power for whatever reason.
I'm confused. Wasn't the auxiliary site also hosting KLTN and located next to BARC near Collingsworth? Or did KAMA end up moving to one of the Downtown buildings? I'm not sure why KAMA would be having issues while KLTN isn't unless they're broadcasting from different facilities now. Is KLTN still on Collingsworth?

I haven't checked the FCC site and don't really have the energy to do so.

That was the previous KAMA Aux site that was used after the Ennis tower was destroyed.

KAMA moved its Aux to a downtown building (Chase, IIRC.) The coverage of the "new" Aux site replicated that of the destroyed Ennis facility, which is why I had speculated previously that the "new" downtown Aux site would eventually be designated the primary KAMA transmitter site (That hasn't happened yet.)
Is KLTN still on Collingsworth?
AFAIK, but perhaps IngenieroPerron can confirm any or all of this.

I don’t know if tropos is bringing it in but I have KAMA in solid HD. Was pretty scratchy driving on 45 in Conroe. Their HD name says KLTN though.

all i will say is yes we had a major off air issue at a tower site, temp changes and “moves” were made to get station back on air. Thanks for the quick work of the tower crew the past four days. All is normal now.

KAMA signal seems to be back to its previous strength at my NW Harris County location; appears they are back on the downtown site.

The request for the second Aux site was quickly granted by the FCC today.

KLTN has been granted an STA to operate from the KAMA aux site on the Chase tower downtown. Apparent problems at the KLTN aux site they’ve been using since the Ennis tower collapse.

Is KAMA now coming from its second aux site?

“Univision Radio Stations Group, Inc. licensee of KLTN-FM (The Station) and affiliate station KAMA- FM requests Special Temporary Authority (STA) for KLTN to operate from the auxiliary facility of The Station’s affiliate KAMA-FM. The Station proposes operation using the same antenna ERP, and HAAT of KAMA-FM’s auxiliary authorization (File No. 0000281308). The attached contour map demonstrates the proposed STA facility 60 dBμ contour is completely contained within the main facility 60 dBμ contour.
The Station’s main facility (File No BLH-20090715AIH) is not operational due to a catastrophic tower failure (ASRN 1052552) and the construction schedule for a replacement tower has not yet been established by the tower owner. Further, due to an antenna and transmission line failure of the Station’s auxiliary facility (File No 0000277448) an STA is required for KLTN-FM to remain operational while repairs are made. If attempted repairs do not succeed, a complete replacement of the antenna and transmission line will be necessary, which could take 90 days or more. Grant of this request will allow The Station to maintain service to the greatest extent possible while repairs are completed.
The Station will operate with the same antenna and ERP as that of KAMA-FM and simultaneous operation of KLTN and KAMA from this facility is not possible. Therefore, only the RF exposure of a single station is considered and the attached RF exposure study completed for the KAMA auxiliary demonstrates the proposed operation does not exceed allowable exposure limits.”

KAMA is primary at the Chase building site. The aux site at Chase was an emergency Aux site for KLTN.
Carr site had a burnout near its antenna line section. I called these sites primary since the Ennis tower has fallen. Ennis site tower , nothing new has come.
KLTN was set on Chase that day and moved KAMA on its aux site, the Studio site, which has a small tower for STL dishes but we got a a transmitter to work there for situations like this. After a few days, tower crew repaired the issue and thats that. KAMA isnt going to move away from Chase or change formats. It was temporary.

Thanks for that update. That’s what I figured was going on. We sometimes forget that some stations have more than one aux site.

Of possible relevance here: In Los Angeles, Audacy is blowing out its FM simulcast of all-news KNX and replacing it with sports:

Does this add to speculation that Audacy will launch a simulcast of SportsRadio 610 on FM here? Seems getting sports on FM is now a priority for Audacy. As has been pointed out before, Houston is one of only two Audacy markets where their sports format is stranded on AM.

To speculate properly, we must review the current revenue of their FM stations versus 610's revenue. Houston is not as sports crazy as Dallas yet Houston has decent pro teams and good college teams. They're not going to drop a $10 million biller to replace it with a $5 million biller. That seems to be why it has not happened, I would think. Anybody know how much the Ticket jumped in revenue going to FM? I doubt it was huge.

Barrett Media has an article about the new sports station in LA. Pull-quote of Houston interest, FWIW:

“With the launch of 97.1 The Fan in Los Angeles, Audacy now has nine of the top ten markets featuring its sports radio brands on crystal-clear FM signals. This year alone, the company added FM to heritage brands like The Score in Chicago and WGR in Buffalo. Based on that pattern, I would expect SportsRadio 610 in Houston to make the shift relatively soon.”

Maybe buy one of those translators.

Maybe buy one of those translators.
Houston is such a huge geographic market that I doubt a translator would do much good. The issue is, having a translator, you promote the FM frequency while 3/4 of the market can't hear it... at least.

The thing with Houston translators is they can easily go out 45+ miles for some reason…
