How am I supposed to see the content on this site?!?!

I’ve had the same issue come up the last few days with RD on my iPhone when held vertically, though it seems intermittent. Ad comes up full screen, no “close” or “X” option, no way to get rid of it other than use the Google ad feedback and report that I’ve seen the ad multiple times, which then closes the ad, only to have another one pop up with the same issue. The ads sometimes don’t even have the Google feedback option, and I have to dismiss and reopen the Safari browser to get to anything else.

If I turn the phone horizontally the ads disappear. Kay Jewelers Outlet site seems to be the most common ad, but there are a few others that come up multiple times. Have not had this happen on any other website, so does not appear to be a malware issue on my phone.

I am running the latest iOS software. Have not had this problem with my iPad, though I hold that horizontally most of the time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ad on this site. Maybe because I only visit the site from my phone and I’m using DuckDuckGo as a browser.

The ads are worst when reading with a mobile device. Part of that is the limited screen space. Ads end up covering each other. Sometimes it's not readily apparent how to get rid of them and, even when rolled up, they still occupy a bit of screen space. The coding is such that if you try to reload to just start over again, because sometimes that's the only solution to the 50-car pileup on your screen, then the new-posts and new-message indicators (the bell and envelope icons, respectively) clear out. It is really an unpleasant experience. It's not as bad on the iPad, fortunately.

When reading with a browser, the main issue I find is ads that try to trick you into clicking through. They do not consistently display the means for just closing out the window. If Google is enforcing any standards regarding user interfaces for ads, they're doing a bad job of it. The ads generally are of poor quality. Some are obviously spammy; for example, using numbers that resemble letters (zero for O) to evade filters. Ad networks are also a notorious vector for malware infections. This is something that Windows users in particular have to watch out for.

Question for those using phones. Do the browsers on the phones have popup blockers, popup block settings, and cookie settings. I'm using Firefox ESR with a desktop and customizing the cookie settings to not allow cookies from unvisited websites and keeping the pop-up blocker on. So far that's working but I have absolutely no idea if those of you using phones even *have these options.

I've seen ads, especially when I attempt clicking on a thread for the first time, hitting shift+enter to open it in a new window. I just go back to said thread and do it again, usually fixes said issue for a particular visit to this site. For the record, I'm using a PC, not a phone.

I'll be happy to stop receiving those horrific ,'Hunter/Sniper' video game pop up ads that has images of animals being shot to death. If ads are targeted, then as an animal lover, I don't know how or why I'm being targeted. They are extremely graphic and make my stomach turn. They are unavoidable when I'm on this site.
Something tells me those ads are not targeted. At least, not here

The ads are what keep this website from being paywalled, so I guess we just have to tough out the occasional annoyance.
I think there was discussion awhile back to take donations or something. But probably won't happen until the board gets redone as our Chief Operator wants to move away from the Fora platform.

I never view sites on a phone - this old lady's eyeballs would ignite on fire like touching a hot dog to a MW broadcast tower!

Maybe an ad free version of RD (with a small monthly fee) could be an option. I'll be the first to sign up.

I think the issue is with Google ad formatting on the XenForo platform. The ads with the “coverup” issue are for legitimate and mostly familiar businesses; I have not seen anything sleazy or inappropriate.

Depends on what you mean by "inappropriate." The ads I'm seeing at the top and bottom of this page are for a Subaru dealership more than an hour away when there's another dealership less than 10 miles up the road. Geographically inappropriate.

it's funny how most of us are in or have been in commercial broadcasting, yet we don't care for ads. it just seems to me that website ads, especially popups and coverups are downright annoying. i never thought broadcast ads (until the dawn of the 8 minute stopset) were annoying. it's a different medium, sure.

Coming as I do from the newspaper business, I tend to sympathize with radio and internet outlets struggling not only to attract advertisers but to keep those ads from being ignored or blocked. That's why I never use ad blockers while on the internet and will often -- but not always -- sit through the long stopsets on radio. I've never interpreted "Information wants to be free" the way the anti-advertising, anti-paywall people do. It means that information ought to be free for a publisher (or station) to disseminate, not free of charge for the end user nor to be distributed free of advertising.
