In my opinion there arent enough gays and italian women to support a dance station in Boston. Seems nearly everyone in New York is either gay or italian woman.
Boston is a hard drinking, hard fighting city that listens to rock.
movin won't ever work, star proved that.
although i would like to see the ratings for their midday mix show.
How do you define what 'works' and what doesn't work? Star 93.7 did better ratings than WBOS, WFNX, WBCN, and a host of other stations. This forum has had this same discussion with WILD-FM and it's ratings. Low ratings are tolerated in Boston for stations that target white males. Yet a station that targets minorities, in this case Italian-American women and gays as you claim, is suspect no matter how high its ratings.
Brooklyndon is young and not very knowledgeable about some things. The picture he painted of Boston is applicable to any blue collar city really. As for their not being enough Itallian woman and gays to support a dance station, and everyone in New York who listens to dance being either gay or an Itallian woman, that's just laughable and just the opinion of someone whose understanding of radio is. Let's not foget that WXKS began as "Disco 108", Ron Robin and "Disco" Vinnie Peruzzi built WBOS from a station that played
classicalmusic in the daytime and disco at night into a very popular station full time disco outlet in their day until Sunny hired almost all of the staff away for Kiss.. It's not that dance would not work in Boston, but the two stations that have represented the music (Star and Hot 97.7 mostly) were two poorly done stations. Star; Bee Gees and Grease songs in every daypart, I dont think they ever recovered from their sign on airstaff that was as out of touch with Boston as a staff could be, Michael Knight, Charlie Wild, Ann Duran, out of towners that sounded like out of towners hired by out of towners. Hot, just a horribly programmed statiion from the ground up with a crap signal so they couldnt survive. Dance stations done right draw mostly CHR audiences obvious and true, not just gay men and Itallian women, that is about the least scientific observation Ive heard in a long time.
