If Imus gets fired, so should w&j on KIOL!

Imus is gone--for now. He hasn't completely screwed the broadcast pooch and I think he'll be back, though I don't think he'll be as mighty as he once was.

And let's face it, he hasn't been what he once was for a long, long time.

If I were Imus with all things considered, namely his age, I'd probaly elect to use this time to bid radio a fond farewell. He's probably got more money than he knows what to do with and if he ever needed more of it, I'm sure there's a book in him somewhere.

As for Walton and Johnson? All racist comments aside, I don't think they shouldn't be working anywhere but they're not funny. I think they're incredibly UNfunny. Case closed. And I read on this string someone brought up Dean and Rog. Man, I hadn't thought about them in years. I didn't even know they were still in Houston. I rarely listened because I didn't think they were funny either. But even at their worst, they were still funnier better than w&j.

Never let AGE be an obstacle! There are many pros throughout the industry who are "seasoned." Putting them out to pasture is not the answer. These people have years of experience in which one may capitalize upon. Perhaps, now that I am 56, I have become passionate about this subject. That's why I took offense at the 'extinct dinosaur' remarks by Rex. I've been in radio since 1972 and have no intentions of getting out and neither should Don Imus.

Chuck,

I''m a few years younger than you and I'm not ready to move in to Shady Acres. But you can't deny that age DOES become a factor if you've been doing radio and putting up with its insanity for as long as Imus has. He may be quite tired of the crap. If that's a consideration for Imus, then yes, he should just go off into nice pretty sunset. If not? Fine, carry on...find another radio job. That's his call.

I don't ascribe to agism Chuck and never will. I only work in the periphery of radio. Even so I know this is a tough industry and it's only gotten more difficult in recent years. But let's not for one minute pretend a birthdate doesn't matter. I wish it didn't, but it does. And not just in radio or Tv but in the insurance game. In construction. As a lawyer. For that matter, society in general!

As I near 54, the particular number certainly doesn't hold the same "crippled, old man with a cane" connotation it did 25 years ago. And just because someone is 71 doesn't make them less viable. There are certain undeniable aspects to reaching an age that can hamper viability, but the number itself shouldn't be a factor.

But it is. I hate it. You hate it. We agree on this . I'll argue the point with you and for you. Is it up to us Baby Boomers who are living longer and better to promote a much needed paradigm shift here? You bet your ass, but I don't know how or where to begin to change societal perspective other than just getting out there with AARP cards in hand and just doin' it. And doing it well.

I actually think Imus sounds the same. Now, if you are comparing him to his Top 40 days, then no, he doesn't have the same energy, but he's not going through an 8-Ball of Cocaine these days either. I like his interviews and his guests. Now, he's gotten a little too heavy on the musical guests these days, but I enjoy his show for the most part. And, Charles McCord is one of the best radio newsmen in the country. He's sharp as a tack and has great pipes.

I dont think age means a hill of beans, except in deciding which gig matches you best. Obviously, some formats may be out for some of us, but thats really more about taste. I just cant see myself sitting there listening to 5 hours of BBBBBBBBB! BBBBBBBBB! BBBBBBBBBB! and talking to incoherent "whatever you call this generation of tattoed freaks." Some guy with a middle age crisis might love the gig.

I think use of the term "dinosaur" says more about the speaker than the subject. I wouldnt be quite so close-mindedly dismissive. For one thing, the population is aging with us, so the market is there & growing. All you have to do is adjust to people as they shift priorities, and become more pragmatic. I dont know about yall, but Im a hell of a lot smarter now than I was in 1985, 100 times more interesting, and damn sexier too.

Radio operators are fools to forget the "old people" market. Have you seen what these people drive?

Thought number two: (I can do this, since Im not on the air & this is not a break) Imus now has a whole new legion of sympathizers, and its not some nazi flag waving group of skinheads. Its not even any particular race. Its anyone who has ever seen someone get knocked down for saying the wrong thing. Anyone whos stopped a moment to think, "Hey, why doesnt equality apply to me, or this guy, but this other guy gets a whole extra set of rights and protections?" "Where's MY parade???" Al Sharpton has set the civil rights movement back 20 years here. Civil rights happened because of public SYMPATHY and support. This deal has done nothing but stir resentment. This wasnt Selma.

Two weeks of non-stop publicity cant hurt you either. You realize if Imus and Anna Nicole Smith ran on an independent ticket, they would win in a landslide, off pure name recognition.

I'll plant a new phrase here; feel free to pick it: "No special groups of people were harmed in the making of this program."

Since there are so many people who flame W&J on this board and since I have a rebellious streak:

WALTON AND JOHNSON ARE FUNNY! They rock. They're pros. I like 'em. I enjoyed working across the hall from 'em.

Flame on.

Hey Mike, I thought I read where you were back on the air here in Houston. Where are you these days?

Purpledevil: Writing news for Metro that's used on several stations (It's great that my old colleague Robert B. McIntire at KILT is using it, and the guys at KCOH use it), doing morning news for KSEV and still working parttime on the air for CNN Headline News. And I get to work with Dylan Ryder and the whole CNN 650 crew. Thank you for asking...!

mike was my boss way back in the day.........at KIOX in Bay City TX......X97FM.
a class act; then...and a class act; now!

And whatever became of that lie that by March 07, w&j would be on stations in Memphis, Austin, & Shreveport? It was a sad lie of desperation from a dellusional mind.

And they're now gone from Dallas radio too... 93.3 The Bone just dropped them. :D
