If you were gonna change the format of . . .

They could easily revive the Eagle brand, and use it with this current format. They own the brand.
In regards to this, I know “The Eagle” name has heritage in this market. However in most markets where “The Eagle” branding is used, it’s used for Classic Rock, which is what The Eagle seemed to border on during its final days.

I think to break the association and not to sound old, a new fresh name would be ideal if the format was resurrected or if iHeart decided to resurrect the station with an active or modern rock direction. What they were doing seemed to overlap a lot with Lone Star 92.5.

Maybe use something like “97-1 The X”? Just an idea and my thoughts, of course, but I think that would be more beneficial than ressurecting the old branding. The only way I’d bring “The Eagle” name back, is if it was placed on 92.5…but I also think 92.5 is just doing fine as it is.

As I said in my post, there are quite a few Eagle Country stations, including Eagle 97.3 in Norfolk. But it is also used for some conservative talk stations, including this one in Columbia MO:

It could also be a sports reference, gloating about the Cowboys defeat of Philadelphia.

Active rock seems to be handled by KGIL. My view is that iHeart wants to have one spoken word station in its Dallas cluster.

I’m sorry, this is a super long thread and I missed your post about Eagle 97.3. And you’re right, I lived in Illinois most of my life and 93.9 The Eagle from Columbia, MO could sometimes be heard during periods of heavy tropospheric ducting when I lived in Peoria, IL. I think conservative talk stations using “Eagle” was before “Freedom” or “Patriot” and those names are kind of similar in meaning.

Also in regards to KVIL, although Alt 103.7 plays a few select active rock tracks, they’re not at all an Active or Modern Rock station. Recently, it actually seems that they’re moving further away from active rock than they were, right after The Eagle flipped to The Freak. There’s pop alternative and rock alternative songs, the latter of which can sometimes be confused for active rock. It seems that Alt 103.7 is playing more pop alternative than rock alternative lately, although they’re still using the “DFW’s Alternative Rock” slogan.

The fact that they're moving away from it may be an indication that the music wasn't getting positive response from its audience. Looking at the current Active Rock chart, I see a lot of the same songs and artists that are on the Alternative chart, such as Green Day, Blink 182, Foo Fighters, and more. Some of those same songs appear on the AAA charts as well. That's the problem with the rock format. A lot of active rock stations find themselves playing a lot of gold. That was what happened to the old Eagle, mixing gold with currents in order to attract a consensus.

On a personal note, I've actually worked at that station. I was working for the cluster across the street when it signed on. It started when soft AC Kiss 93.9 picked up Sean Hannity in the afternoon in the days following 9/11 and made the transition to talk early in 2002. It always had a conservative lean, but it wasn’t always pure political talk. Its morning show tended to be more focused on local issues, and Gary Nolan, while always right-leaning, has never completely fit inside that box. It also aired Phil Hendrie at night and Coast to Coast in the overnights. It actually stole that show from us. I worked part time there doing weather and production as part of my weekend duties at sister-CHR Y107 after leaving Cumulus but didn't quite last a year. Y107 eliminated most of its weekend air staff a couple or three months before my one-year anniversary.

My view is that iHeart wants to have one spoken word station in its Dallas cluster.

Part of my point in bringing up a bit of background on 93.9 The Eagle is that transitioning from sports/guy talk to talk wouldn’t be that difficult. Not sure if DFW has a spot for Clay and Buck, but they could be added to 97.1 without any major disruption and without making it into a geriatric talk station. Not that anyone is currently listening, but the few who are probably wouldn’t complain much if that show were added. It seems to do a little better with the younger audience than Limbaugh did, or at least that was what I'd heard a year or so ago. About the only time any of the talk stations where I've worked ever got complaints was if they bumped Paul Harvey. If there was ever a scheduling error on a sporting event or on our lineup sheet that impacted Paul Harvey, the phones would light up like a Christmas tree!

Someone told me today that iHeart is wanting to further experiment with the "Pride" format and at a meeting last month, KEGL was mentioned as one of the stations its coming to. I'd never heard of it but she said it's been in podcast form and that some of the stations are using it on their HD's.

If that's the case, how much more can you narrow down an audience?

(Throwing my hands up . . . I literally did.) What Planet am I on?

It's being done in Palm Springs, although not by iHeart.

How long before the legislature passes a law....

A Dance format...in Dallas??? That'd go over like a lead balloon.

There needs to be at least one proper all-news format on FM. Used to be KEWS. They did it fairly well, but were vastly under resourced.

Sorry, but the only way that happens is if Audacy suddenly decides to blow up 107.5 and pairs it with 1080 for an FM simulcast. Nobody in DFW Radio is going to pull a page from the Radio One Houston playbook and start-up a brand new news operation from scratch. Too expensive, too little time spent listening for the average consumer.

... and too old.

They have said that the original name was supposed to be 97.1 The Freq (as in frequency), but they thought the spelling would cause confusion, so they went with “Freak”.
There was an AAA station in State College, PA called “98.7 the Freq.”. I enjoyed streaming them. It would have been neat for KEGL to go with that.

I could see KEGL tweaking the talk format and truly be “not a sports station.” They could evolve into a standard talk station. As AM declines, it could absorb some programming from KFXR 1190, should iHeart decide keeping KFXR isn’t worth it.

I’d love to see The Eagle return, but I don’t think iHeart would run it right. If they did, I think it would still be around. I’m not picky. I just don’t want them to introduce a two-year-old song with a sweeper saying “new rock first.” iHeart does a great job programming KZPS. If they put some of that effort into KEGL it would work wonders.

“We’ll have more Dallas Mavericks basketball on the Pride 97.1 radio network.” “After the Mavericks game, stay turned to Pride 97.1 for Tiesto, Swedish House Mafia, and Kylie Minogue.”

I wonder what's going on air if Pride fails on KEGL… Fox Sports 97.1? Tú 97.1? Retro 97.1? La Preciosa 97.1? 97.1 El Patron?

Can you imagine? lol.

I'm a numbers guy.

I can't find any specific numbers for Dallas/Metroplex - but 4.1% of Texans say they're gay.

Let's SAY that 5% of Dallas is gay. How many of them are going to listen to this radio station? I'm sure this could work as a podcast that's available globally - and it's actually a great idea, in that form. For a one market radio station, I, again, I am just - I am . . . I dunno.
