Imus Done!! CBS fires him

Re: It's official: CBS Radio has fired Don Imus

So exactly when does he start working for his old boss Mel Karmazin? Mid-October sounds about right.

Re: It's official: CBS Radio has fired Don Imus

Uncle Mel laughs all the way to the bank again at CBS Radio's expense! Gotta love that Mel!

If Sharpton and Jackson went after rap artists they'd be branded as stuffy and outdated and lose their credibility to do what they did to Imus to the next guy.

Sad but true.

That is not fair and its not accurate. Sharpton HAS gone after rappers for use of the "N" word, and bit*h" and H* too, dont re write history because you dont agree with the outcome. He actually was talking to some rappers about that stuff a few days before Imus shot himself in the foot. He just announced at the press conference that he is meeting with labels and a few rappers next week because he feels that NOBODY should use "Ho's" and "Bitch*s" in song etc. HE now says he wants to clean up the airwaves in some sense and clean up the culture. So if you want to complain about folks clamping down on your perceived freedom of expression, Sharpton is far from the biggest villain there. Im no Sharpton fan BUT Im objective enough to know that most of the people who are so upset about Imus are really more upset about Sharpton being involved and his percieved win over Imus and CBS et al.

SO HERE's A QUESTION: What is the difference between Sharpton/Jackson wanting to clean things up, )the culture, the airwaves) and the guys like Falwell etc? they've been on the same kick for years except they have not been as effective.

Should Imus have been fired? ..........not for me to say, BUT I cant feel sorry for the multi millionaire old man who has done the same stuff time and time again, who will almost surely end up on Sirius which is sort of a New York radio dinosaur burial ground.

Trust me, Imus will be fine. The last guy you need to worry about is Don Imus.

Re: Imus DONE!!

So where is the part in the CBS statement that says this language will not be allowed on their stations. I guess the hip hop stations can continue to support music that treats women the same way. But instead of 45 second live conversation these songs are recorded, screened and played several times a day.

Imus' comments were deplorable and in the end what choice did his employers had once advertisers stoped pulling out. I do find it ironic that those leading the charge to fire him were frequently skewered on his show.

This is a sad day for free speech.

Free speech is one thing, making degrading comments about a women's college basketball team is another. These ladies are not public figures, so they should be immune from any talk show host's commentary - especially when the comments in question can be construed as racial.

Enough with the "Free speech" whining!.

Come on Deadman it is so not about Free Speech!. You HAVE FREE SPEECH, you have the right to say whatever you want as long as you're ready to handle the consequences!. So here were the consequences!. It's not abuot Free Speech, it's about an old man from another time who has done this sort of thng over and over again. If you want to fly the free speech flag think about this: The bloggers were the ones that grabbed onto the Imus thing BEFORE Sharpton and Jackson, so Sharpton and Jackson felt he was out of line, so they exerted THEIR RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH and went out and protested, the advertisers, the company, etc. So it's simple, you want free speech? it's a right that goes to those who you dont agree with as well.

Should Imus have been fired? not my place to say but just because I didnt find his comment particularly offensive doesnt mean that THEY WERE NOT OFFENSIVE, and Im smart enough even though I didnt find them offensive to understand why others DID find them offensive. You on te other hand only see through your own eyes man, so you dont seem capable of understanding why someone would be offended by this, even though as far as you're concerned " hey it was just a joke".

Free Speech? when have you ever had free speech on air? the FCC regulates it, programming regulates it, SPONSORS REGULATE IT, the company regulates it......Dont be naive man!.

Does Stern have enough pull at sirius to keep Imus off, if he really does'nt want him there? Or do you think Stern will welcome him if he thinks it would be for the better of the company? On the same note, if the two companies merge, do Opie and Anthony stay on satelite?

Sorry Don, maybe it is time to look at satelite.
So who is CBS and MSNBC going to replace Imus with?
Not a soul at BET can get ratings...and not produce even worse comments than Don....I don't think Don Rickles will get the nod for a radio preview....oh dear god NO!!!>>>NOT RYAN SEACREST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm gonna be sick. God love ya Don!

I guess Rev. Al Sharpton and Rev. Jesse Jackson are happy now. All those hours spent criticizing Don Imus, condemning him to burn at the stake for the mere utterance of three words have finally led to what was their ultimate goal: Imus's termination. Pity the poor souls - they must not have slept a wink knowing that such a terrible, evil, bigoted man had a nationally syndicated radio program. Now they can rest easy.

Sharpton and Jackson may be wearing the crowns of victory and drinking lots of champagne tonight, but those of us who believe in free speech and wish to see The Constitution upheld have been dealt a major blow. Imus is no Johnny come lately - he has well over 40 years of experience in the radio industry. How sensitive as a society have we become where three words - "nappy headed hos" - leads to a major public outcry, companies pulling their advertisements from Imus In The Morning, and finally the outright termination of Imus himself? With the reaction and the publicity this has received, it would have you believe that Imus has been revealed to be the leader of the KKK's New York division. I really don't like where this country is headed - with the socially backwards politicians that we appoint to office, it's just a matter of time before the government is regulating everything that we do and we become a Big Brother nation. If that happens, count me out.

Imus has apologized profusely since the day he made the statement - he knew the remark was offensive and admitted that he was wrong, but that wasn't enough. Never mind the fact that there was a clear tone of jest when he made the statement. Let's be honest: Imus made the mistake of making a disparaging remark about a group of predominantly African-Americans while Sharpton was within earshot. It doesn't matter if Imus called them "dipsticks" or "doodyheads" - the end result would have been the same. Sharpton and Jackson are just two people with too much money and time on their hands. Who died and declared them kings? Has the African-American population declared en masse that they want these two to be their mouthpieces? I'll bet you most of them heard it, were slightly offended, and went about their daily lives. Imus is a very benevolent person who, along with his wife, has raised millions of dollars for children in need of all ethnic backgrounds. Sharpton and Jackson? They might get around to it once they're done counting their money and griping about how "the man" holds them down.

I'm not too worried about Imus - the man will land on his feet either at WABC or on satellite radio. But this event along with the growing empowerment of the FCC does not bode well for this nation we live in. I envision the United States becoming an Orwellian nation in a matter of years unless we pull our heads out of our asses and stop being a bunch of fragile, delicate little cupcakes. America was founded as a democratic nation with freedom entitled to all of its citizens - let's keep it that way.

I agree its time to clean it up and do it well. And welcome to satellite radio Don Imus.
Not while there is a merger going on. Can't you see Jackson and Sharpton protesting that?

Imus career is over.

For all those that knocked me for saying this would happen FROM MY FIRST POST on this, you should be ashamed to call yourselves broadcasters. You are all so out of touch with reality and society.

So, I was wrong. I'll be the first to admit it.

My biggest point of contention with you was that you seemed to take joy in Imus' impending demise as well as getting very nasty in personal attacks against those who disagreed with you.

Also, how dare you pigeonhole those of us who thought that Imus would not be fired - saying we should be ashamed of ourselves. Because we disagreed with you and the tactics used by Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and others?? As for being out of touch with reality and society, you should look in the mirror before you judge others.

On a positive note, I hope Sharpton and Jackson make good on their promise to go after the hip-hop & rap artists, along with their record companies who've made millions of dollars through degradation of others, especially women.
You should be ASHAMED of yourselves. As broadcasters, we are to be on the TOP of our game. Ahead of the curve. Ahead of all trends. MOST of you were BLIND even it went downhill for him yesterday at NBC. You still continue to be so. Some of you will end up just like Imus - unemployed and not even know what hit you. I have no problem saying I have a pulse to on what is going on. That's my job and I proved it here, too.

The problem with most of you is you DIDN'T UNDERSTAND my logic. You just ranted off on anything I said. Get a clue for once.

I've seen this all before since I live in Hollywood. I know how you spin these things and how you shut up right away, go away, let the spin doctors, publicists and lawyers handle things. Imus did exactly everything wrong from his numerous apologies to going to the ENEMY (Sharpton) where he could NOT control his own fate (stupid!). It's unbelievable that ANYONE in broadcasting with as my years behind him as he has could do something that stupid. Then today he got fiesty against Sharpton again. WRONG THING TO DO when you've already been canned by one employer and Sharpton is going to meet with your boss. I can't believe his agent, his people, CBS or NBC, some of the top executives in this business, didn't stop him somewhere along the way. IT'S ALMOST LIKE THEY WANTED HIM TO HANG HIMSELF OUT TO DRY....Then maybe they just did....

Well everyone screaming for Imus blood have been granted their "Two Pounds of Flesh" Don is fired from CBS Radio's WFAN. I hope you all feel better! What? Theres really no difference than before? Imagine that!
Mostb1 you got your wish! Congradulations on a job well done! Now blasting off from pad number three Don Imus in Satellite Country!
Welcome to Satellite Radio Don Imus! What? You Don't Think So? Just Wait and See!
And Congradulations to CBS Radio on another nail in their Coffin. Sell the company now or go bankrupt later.

Imus abused his privilege of the responsible and ethical use of the airwaves. I take no glee that any fellow broadcaster is fired. But he had to go and he did it to himself. He did not reform himself as he had previously promised. If you are going to use the public airwaves, you better think twice about making racist, sexist or homophobic so-called jokes or your fate will be the same. Imus, along with many others including rap artists, have lowered the bar TOO far. The line in the sand has now been drawn. DON'T CROSS IT or you will be SACRIFICED just as Imus had to be.

And, btw, come back in three or four weeks after this all dies down. When the next Paris Hilton, Anna Nichole Smith or Natalie Hollloway type story explodes in the news and it will be back to GREEN business as usual...(except for Imus...he's going to be a hot potato for a while...maybe forever)...

No, it is a great day for the marketplace deciding what is decent and what is indecent on the public airwaves...

when can we expect AL and Jessie to apologize to those Duke Lacross players??the losers will be WFAN,that wimp ass MSNBC and CBS .Imus will have a platform to do his thing. It may be the net or Sirius but it will happen.Veterans can thank Mr Imus for helping them get higher life insurance benefits, It NEVER would have happened.Over all Don did more good than harm. And he may have crossed the line.He tells the story about the god awful mess in Iraq the way it is.Hell, the deal played right into the White House hands..When the dust settles, we will realize Don was one heck of an American, but like all of us, he had his faults.

You guys HAVE to stop making this about Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, it is not about them. IMUS MADE THE COMMENTS, Sharpton and Jackson have the right to protest such speech, as does anyone who feels that it is not appropraite. Some people (white people) in this country especially in New York see Sharpton as an opportunist and while that may be so to some degree, it may not be depending on your perspective but again Imus is responsible for what happened to Imus, period. Sharpton and Jackson are just part of the protest, NOW was all over him, NOW, THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN, mostly white suburban women that make up that group. NOt Sharpton and jackson,......... The Duke cae/ has ZERO to do with this. Let's not eclipse the real issue, seriously. Some idiot actually brought up the OJ verdict in his post, yo guys are losing your heads. Imus is a rich, old man from the old school where certain bigoted views were pretty commonplace. Does thatr make him a huge cross burning racist? NO but there is no question that he's from a certain era and holds certain bigoted views, it's just fact based on his past history and things he has said. HE is also so not a 'shock jock" he's been a radio version of Tim Russert for years, he's no shock jock and if he thought he could be while at teh same time interviewing presential hopefuls and government figures, well that's not very reaiistic!.

Talk about shooting the messenger, it is not about Sharpton and Jackson and how full of t you may think they are, Imus blew it, period.
