Indy radio not good

Mix-FM blows away almost any Big City Top-40 station out there? Huh? Are you on crack? You don't get out much do you?

Was through Indy earlier in the week. Not that impressive for market-41. Is there good radio there? Yes. Good talent? Not everywhere but, yes. Went through "The Haute" too and it's radio in a low 100's market. Is there good radio there for a low 100-market? Yes. Is there talent there? Yes, at places for a low 100-market. When you compare apples to watermellons you're going to see the big differences. When you bring it down to an apple-to-apple comparison, they're about the same when it comes to the amount of good talent in the market for the number of stations there, their promotions and what the "community goals" are for the given market and station. In reality, there should be a bigger difference than there is (in favor of Indy), but there's not. Not picking, because we have the same problem here in Denver when it comes to Denver vs Colorado Springs. I'm just saying...

I had thought you were involved in getting 102.9 assigned to Edinburgh KW.

I had it allocated to Garden City. Some Columbus stations spent big money to slow it down 15 years....

Think I would remember something like that...

MIX-FM and a big time sound - hmmmm - it is my opinion that they compete with a big time sound just as well as Radio Now and especially in the mid-90's - no comparison at all and that's pretty sad for INDY - the fact that MIX can sound just as good these days. I remember a caller from INDY calling middays at MIX and wishing the Haute station would be able to beef its signal deep into INDY so he could hear GOOD RADIO!! Sad when Indy residents call long distance to TH for their radio needs. WAZY sounded even bigger and better last year! Face it - this thread is right - Indy radio is NOT GOOD!!!! I prefer ANYTHING in the cornfields to INDY right now - no contest!

I think we have to remember in every market there are good jocks and not so good jocks. In NYC it's the same issue and it's the #1 market in the states. Being given the freedom to be a "good jock" has a lot to do with the sound of a lot of people on the air today, throw in, consolidation, consultants and their playlist, owners who have no clue how the business works, voice tracking, and PD's unable to or afraid to make a decision on what happens on his/her station, let's not forget the corporate PD. Remember the old phrase to many cooks in the kitchen spoil the meal? Look at most of the "Jack" formats, any "live" talent? In most markets no, yet people talk about how much they like the format while Jocks are given less opportunities to be "live" on the air anymore. As different as the "Jack" format is, it's not good for those of us in the business who enjoy being on the air.

I've asked this on other sites, what do you think makes a good Jock? Where can they get the training to be "good"? What would you do to bring a positive change to radio to make it strong again?

Uhmm... other than college & high school stations, radio stations don't exist so people who like being on the air have a chance to do it. They exist to aquire an audience desirable to advertisers. If a Jack station can do that without jocks, well that certainly helps the bottom line and whether the creative-types want to admit it or not, their job exists because of the bottom line, not the other way around.

Jocks and aspiring jocks should take note of why Jack-type stations have been successful. One of those reasons is the absence of inane talking heads laughing at their own unfunny bits and talking about crap the listener has no interest in.

We often hear complaints that jocks don't have the freedom to be entertaining. B.S. a good jock makes a point of making formatic elements memorable. How many times have you heard a jock just throw-away the weather forecast by simply reading the weather wire and playing the jingle close. 15-20 times....TODAY! A good jock would RELATE that forecast differently EVERYTIME.

Same goes to for station promos and liners. Most of the time you hear jocks rushing through them so they can get to their CONTENT! Hey knucklehead! The promo WAS the content and you threw it away along with the chance to show your skill by making it entertaining, interesting or God forbid understandable.

So IMnotsoHO..
1. What makes a good jock?
One that works as hard to make the station elements
entertaining as they do on their own (mostly lame) bits. He/She
should also be able to be entertaining under whatever rules the station
in question has in place.

2. Where can they get training to be good?
Tough one- They need PDs that know how and those PDs need to be
in smaller markets. Problem is, they don't and they aren't.

3. What would you do to bring a positive change to radio to
make it strong again?
First, I don't agree with the premise that radio isn't strong.
Second, train the trainers. It's got to start with PDs that know
what they're doing.
Third, recognize that radio has a cycle. Right now we're on the down-
side of the personality cycle. It will become more important again.

Indy radio not too bad

I will say, that the offerings of Indianapolis Radio seem pretty nice for someone visiting. I had been in town just last week for Gen-Con, and found the Radio Stations in and around Indianapolis to be quite nice. We have no real EZ Listening around here in NY, only Hot AC & stuff, so I found it interesting that Indy has two such EZ stations at 105.7 and 107.9 It was also amusing to hear Radio Disney on FM. In most places it is only on AM (AM 1560 in NYC). I thought that 101.9 WKLU was pretty good, with some interesting DJs. I like that they give the station owners phone # out on the air. I also liked being able to hear country music. We have no country stations in the New York area. I didn't come across an oldies station though? I also thought it was pretty cool that I could listen to WCBS AM 880 from back home at night via SkyWave!

So from the outside looking in, What I heard wasn't too bad. OK, there was some bad automation here and there. But I can hear bad Automation right here at home from Long Island and Connecticut, and LI is a top 20 Major market, so don't feel bad. Indianapolis and its radio spectrum seem to be pretty decent.
