Is a rhythm hitting Miami?

Just listened for about 20 minutes... playin' hits... sounds very automated... you'll hear the tunes with a image thing between 'em... also jingles... So, much like the usual, zero Miami vibe, this station could play in Houston... but no clutter.. none of that pesky talent stuff...

They are promising something like 5,000 songs in a row with no interruption. That has proven to be a good launch tactic for younger leaning stations. Once the loooooong music sweep is over, they add back the talent and commercials and any needed service elements.

The "Miami vibe" is the rhythmic blend.

Not really. EDM's hot spots are European, with Germany, Italy and even the Netherlands having more active production and radio airplay. And, of course, the island getaway places like the Canaries, Mallorca and Ibiza are fueled by dance.

You have to ask yourself how many EDM stations there are in Latin America to start understanding that dance is not the same as rhythmic in Miami. Dance is a subset, rhythmic is a lifestyle.

Good points you made David. More true which sucks because I feel like Miami should be an EDM capital, just like Ibiza except its not on an island but does have lots of night clubs that play EDM here.

Oh I understand that but I just wish that more EDM would be played here.

With the "old" format, this station just scored a 3.1 share (granted, ages 6+...not sure about key demos) in the latest Nielsen survey. Impressive comeback over the past 90 days.

Did they make an error by evolving to Rhythmic Hot AC?

I don’t believe so. Being in a 3-way Top 40 battle with Power and Hits fighting it out for (mostly) the distant runner up to ‘HYI, it made sense to fill a void. Yeah, the Coast could have made a return, but would it have really done anything ratings and sales wise (even if you pair it with Easy)?

Plus, the current version of Easy ("80s, 90s, and more") does contain a lot of the songs that were on the Coast.

If Hits plays a fair amount of throwbacks that aired on Power 96, etc., I can see the Rhythmic AC iteration of Hits be successful in Miami. Hits does seem to have some odd choices for songs so far (Whataya Want From Me? Good 4 U?) in its Rhythmic AC format (or are they really a Hot AC, but very far from the modern AC of old?), but in fairness, Hits is testing the waters first.

So it's pretty much Miami's KTU.
Hits sounds almost like a conventional Hot AC (or AC a la Magic 94.9 in Tampa Bay?), considering that they are playing Olivia Rodrigo, which KTU barely plays. I'm not sure if Hits will add some local spice, like Easy eventually did. Adding songs that used to play on Power 96 won't hurt.

Honestly I feel they missed out with

I think they missed a great chance with reviving the Coast. 102.7 is claiming to be the 80s station, and the 80s remain huge for Miamians. Even Hispanics love the 80s.

They could have rebooted the station with a more "variety hits" format, which is missing in the market, but leaned more "Pop" than "pop rock" and focused on all these rhythmic hits that made the firs 939 MIA a success. Say what you will, but until it's tried....there is no proof it wouldn't have worked. 102.7 was a lot better before they cut the playlist and ditched Jade. Now it's the same thing over and over. Predictable and un-enjoyable, IMO.

WCBS-FM can sound stellar. Why can't The Beach?

The Beach had a sort of unique playlist for a mainstream Classic Hits station, playing many 90s dance tracks. Now they sound a bit more generic and a bit less Miami.

Agreed. The Beach has the potential to be something awesome and it's a generic as it could be. The lady who was programming it, before she was let go, did a hell of a job. Now that she's gone....when was the last time you heard Clave Rocks on The Beach?

Such a shame.

Is the station still programmed locally?

I enjoyed The Beach a few years ago. Last time I checked you could interchange it with any Classic Hits station in the US

At one point it was...I'm not sure about it anymore.
I notice they don't play as much freestyle as they used to. It wasn't uncommon to hear Expose, Company B, etc. on 102.7 pre-pandemic. It seemed they were at least trying to play music that was pretty prominent on the radio in South Florida back in the day. Maybe it wasn't working? They do still play plenty of 80s synthpop but the station feels a bit more generic now.

I'm not there so I couldn't tell you, but I don't believe it. I bet it worked fine. To me it feels like a corporate move....they want it more cookie cutter so they cut out the stuff that Miami likes.

To me it's a bad move, I don't know any 80s fans here who like the Beach today, as opposed to when they did like it 2-3 years ago. Losing Jade and losing the rhythmic hits was a killer and now it sounds like a jukebox with long commercial sets. Kenny and his sidekick are really the only reason to listen anymore. They're at least funny.

Who knows? Unless the owners have a local PD or at least some local research the station is just kind of there.
