Northern Kentucky University bucked a trend of universities dumping radio stations and bought a huge signal halfway between Cincinnati and Dayton, Ohio as well as one in Portsmouth, Ohio. They play nothing but obscure music few have ever heard of. If it's true that "everyone" is tired of the same music and wants to hear nothing but obscure, unknown music than WNKU and affiliates should be number one, hands down in both markets come next book or PPM. If they languish at the bottom with a competitive signal, I guess "everyone" doesn't want to hear obscure music and are sticking with the hits...you know, favorites over and over.
People here seem to forget that KALW 91.7 does exactly what people are demanding: they play an extremely wide variety of music with very few repeats. Depending on the day and time they play African pop, space music, symphonies, obscure Tin Pan Alley tunes, folk, singer/songwriter, bluegrass, blues, Western, and a whole panoply of "world" music. Generally, KALW does this from 9 to midnight weekdays and much of Saturday and Sunday.
But does KALW get ratings? No. Well, they get a 0.4 to a 0.6. That's enough to support themselves, but it's not the great ratings blockbuster people here would expect to see for a station that plays a wide variety of music.
To put it simply: You HAVE a variety of music here in the Bay Area, but you don't support it!
