IS KFI BACK TO 50KW?

I can't believe KFI did a story on farting this morning. Something about a guy arrested for assault on a police officer by using natural gas.
Can't decide if it a ::) or :D.

That story was on Wednesday but obviously you are not a regular listener to "Handel on The News". The end of each 6am and also the 8:30am edition of HOTN always features some kind of weird stories, often involving gaseous (and other) intestinal emissions or offbeat sexcapades. Weird animal stories and human relationships thereto are also favorites.

They did the "official" turn on today though I think they have been at full power a lot of the time lately based upon my own reception perception not any actual field strength measurement.

I'm very familiar with Handel but the piece I'm referring to was aired during a break on Rush's show. Maybe around 10:30.
I stopped listening to Handel after his childish rant involving his two daughters in the elevator. I can't believe KFI let him get away with his teenage attitude.

What you heard was maybe a news tease or Handel promo. If it was a news tease then I too am surprised. I don't listen to Rush or anyone else on KFI, except Leo Laporte and Wayne Resnick on weekends, so I did not hear what you heard. I did catch the story, however, on Handel On The News.

As to Handel's studio rage, he is not the first nor will he be the last highly rated host to get a pass on boorish behavior. The basic rule is that if your show is billing high you're their guy.

To be fair, I think a part of the deal was that he go to "Anger Management" and I know he began going to a Shrink, though he doesn't mention it all that much. Handel is a hard worker, he does the weekend show plus the morning shows. He also has a Surrogacy Legal practice and does a lot of sponsored events and meet and greet for the station. People like that tend to be high strung and quick to blow their tops. At least that turned out better than John Kobylt's feud with Ziegler as Jamie White wasn't let go as a direct result of the war, but because of the ratings. John and Ken do not work nearly as hard and I've heard that they pretape a lot of their show, before I stopped listening I often heard while commuting the first hour repeated for the last hour of their show.

I do have to suspect that perhaps Zig wasn’t performing as well as they wanted either but still it was badly handled (no pun intended) by CC management. Ziegler is a lot better than Suits who was hired to take the 7 to 10pm slot. The replacement was so bad that they had to bring in a co-host to try and keep the ship afloat. Apparently it is working though I still can't listen for very long.

Re: IS KFI BACK TO 50KW? IBOC?

Will KFI resume IBOC transmission? Were they using HD just prior to the plane crash?

Thx

I measured KFI two nights ago here on Kaua`i, and also last night, at the same time (7:30 to 8:00 PM HST) just to compare signal levels between the new tower and the backup. I just had my FIM-41 calibrated, so I know it is good to go.

On Wednesday, KFI was coming in with 150 to 300 microvolts. On Thursday night the signal was up between 500 and 600 microvolts, and much more steady, with little fading. I also tuned in at about 2:00AM HST (5:00AM PDT) and found a little less signal, about 450 to 500 microvolts, and some co-channel flutter from somewhere else on the planet.

So, a major improvement out here in mid-Pacific. KNX and KFI had been fairly equal since the KFI tower failure, but KNX is consistently delivering 120 to 150 microvolts, and now KFI is the clearer signal by far.

So now I get to hear the traffic reports on the 405 and the 210 from the comfort of my little house in Kilauea again.

Tuned the Sangean HD Radio to 640 last night, and tried the new AOR LA-390 Loop. Just after sunset, KFI came bursting thru, here in the Salt Lake City (Midvale) area. Got progressively better as the grey line moved toward LA.
That's with an indoor antenna, and a stucco building!

Hope to try later, with outside antennas, and the Ten Tec radio. Do they QSL?

KFI AM 640 is once again coming in loud and clear throughout Bakersfield, CA. (Except when driving in proximity to high-voltage transmission lines.) After the failure of the previous tower, it became mostly unlistenable due to heavy static and other interference.
The KFI signal is now strong and steady in-car, but not so great indoors.
It's remarkable that it comes through as good as it does here, not just because of the distance (approximately 135 miles) but because of the natural geographical barrier of the Tehachapi mountains range. Very few signals originating from the Southland penetrate the Central Valley without the assistance of repeaters, etc. It's nice to be able to get John & Ken "live" while on-the-go once again.
KFI has historically generated hits in the ratings books for the Bakersfield market (usually low, however) despite it being an out-of-market station. Undoubtedly KFI will again grab some points away from some of the Bakersfield stations now that their signal is restored.
