It's that time of the year...

I really think they may do the "One from the sleigh and one from today" slogan. Someone else suggested they may do that earlier, and the way it's going I think this may be the approach they take.

With the successful recycling of The Stiffs, how about another oldie but goodie when we try and predict who and when the locals will go all Christmas music? I am kind of surprised nobody has jumped yet. I know it would be overkill but...

Heh. "Mix" could go at any moment. They need some kind of boost. Seems that they're the third station to try that moniker with less than stellar results.

The annual XMAS flips have begun nationwide.
Some formats that switch to XMAS never come back in January.
Sort of a Radio euthanasia...

Still no Christmas flips in WNY - thankfully. Anybody want to bet on whether that will be true by Noon on Friday?

102.5 dumps the first lump of coal.
Do people really listen to vapid mind numbing XMAS Muzak
over & over & over.???

Just make those cash registers ring...

For the life of me, I cannot understand how anybody enjoys Christmas music so long before Christmas.

It's not like regular music, where if you like a certain beat it maybe gets your pulse rate going---and it gets you up for work, or to the gym or whatever. Christmas music is a very different kind of music. It's generally a sentimental experience for people, which is really hard to sustain for the length of time it takes to get from NOW until Christmas.

Are people REALLY tuning this in this early? I don't get it at all. I like Christmas music, but not a month and a half before Christmas.

Typically, the stations that flip to Christmas get the biggest ratings of the quarter. We're already running spots that mention Christmas gifts, suggesting to beat the crowds and start shopping early.

Are you a female over 25? That's who this seasonal programming is targeted at. The stations that do program all Christmas music from the week before Thanksgiving generally increase their numbers significantly from the first week on. It's sustainable, and only grows week by week.

Only a few markets, such as Miami, don't get the "bang" from all Christmas and that is due to the cultural differences in the ethnic community in those instances.

The PPM device helps spike the ratings.
People in shopping malls all day where XMAS stations are playing.
That must be a huge factor, not actual "listening"...

The listening by casual shoppers in an individual store in a mall is so brief that it will not help the listening level of a station. And, as BigA says, most malls and mall stores have in-store music tailored to their clientele.

About 90% of listening time to the average music station is provided by just 50% of the listeners. The other half may be part of the cume number, but they actually cause the average time spent listening to decrease! A typical shopper in a non-mall store that uses a station for music is going to give it one, maybe two quarter hours of listening. That will not have any significant effect on the ratings.

And in a diary market like Buffalo, the listener will not even remember to write it down.

Women are ruining Christmas for everybody.

Since the likelihood of any posters in this thread being (1) a Woman, and (2) in the 25-54 demo is nil, it really shouldn't matter one way or another. I don't listen, but I understand why people listen and like it. To each his own.

Other than being empty-headed, I'm not sure why ANYONE would listen.
