I notice that MY has played a couple of Christmas songs today, just mixed in with the regular music. I guess they will increase the frequency in which they are played as the holiday gets closer. That I can live with.

Or on the same station as Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole.awp69 said:[If it were a perfect world, we should never hear Michael Jackson and Gloria Gaynor on the same station as All-American-Rejects and Foster the People.
Totally agree, 100%. That's what I've been saying all along.awp69 said:Scooter Lesley said:Guys...you are not suppose to like or agree with it! The prime demo is Female 18-34, with a few songs tossed in to snag the secondary demo, Female 35-54.
That's fine if that's their reasoning, but I think it's rather stupid to alienate the male listener. And if they really want to draw a base (and yes, I know this isn't how demographic groups are in radio), it really should be both guys and gals in their 20s to 40s. I still think your 18-21 year-olds are going to the B. And 50+ should be Magic's territory.
I know I've only been pointing out the mistakes (to my likes) such as hearing Bonnie Tyler, Michael Jackson and ABBA all in the same day. I do tend to agree with carolinaradio that it seems to be the same 5 to 10 songs from 70s and/or soft 80s that they sprinkle in.
I still don't think any female or male that likes All-American Rejects or Foster the People are really going to dig "Dancing Queen". OK, there may be a few, but regardless, I'll repeat it again, it just sticks out like a sore thumb. Like carolinaradio, I'm willing to put up with it BUT that's because there isn't much else for MALES in their 20s to 40s to like in this area.
Rock 101 is too classic for the younger male age group and the Planet "just rocks" anything redneck (so maybe I should say there's nothing for 20-40 year-old non-rednecks).
With all the Pink, Lada Gaga and Katy Perry songs, it is clear that MY is female leaning. Those are songs though that an average male can tolerate. But "Dancing Queen" and "Total Eclipse" are not only complete turnoffs to the male crowd, but even a 18-34 female demographic are likely to roll their eyes and flip the station. So the question is, is it even worth bothering with those few 70s/soft 80s songs? Doesn't seem like it to me.
I'm willing to put up with it, but I truly don't think those few songs help anything. The older crowd isn't going to stick around through all the newer, edgier stuff to hear them. And the younger crowd is just going to yawn (regardless of male or female).
freqdev said:from an advertisers point of view why would you pigeon hole a station that seems as one thing to you that is better than what it was before and you and assume that a 33 year old male or female wouldn't like a particular song? i like george strait and the black eyed peas. it is not what fits. it is the station's image that wins. there are a lot of ingredients.
carolinaradio said:I hesitate to call MY a Hot AC (as they still report to Mediabase as AC), but they sound like one, so here goes: why doesn't any other Hot AC in a prominent market that I've ever heard, since...heck, 2000 play "Dancing Queen" or "I Will Survive?" Or any song before 1980? Does MY have some secret, or do they just not have a clear idea of what they are doing? The slow 80s songs have more of a place than those tacky disco songs from the late 70s.
I will continue to say, those 5 or 6 strange 70s songs aside, they sound very good. Anything is better than the way they sounded before.
I heard "We Are Family" this morning. They aren't different 70s songs than before, but they're playing them more, it seems. Playing Sister Sledge or Gloria Gaynor going in to Hot Chelle Rae, Jimmy Eat World, Foster The People, Green Day, etc. is just wretched. They stick out like a sore thumb, I don't care what their strategy may be. Some songs do not mix well, no matter how it 'looks' or seems like they may. That's like Rock 101 playing Elvis and Little Richard because their listeners might have grown up listening to those artists. Not gonna happen.awp69 said:carolinaradio said:I hesitate to call MY a Hot AC (as they still report to Mediabase as AC), but they sound like one, so here goes: why doesn't any other Hot AC in a prominent market that I've ever heard, since...heck, 2000 play "Dancing Queen" or "I Will Survive?" Agreed. And add the Commodores to the list of strange 70s songs. Played about 15 minutes ago. WTF. As you say, they're better than before, but I too would like to know what MY expects to gain by these songs. And I still feel like it seemed to go away for a few weeks, but has picked up more in recent days. I still wonder if it's a play to attract some of the Magic listeners during the all-Christmas party at 98.9.

Everything aside, I wonder how many posters are actually listening to MY on a regular basis to hear how these songs sound out of place?
These issues are small, though, compared to a hot AC like their sister station WISX/Mix 106.1 in Philadelphia, for example - talk about a terrible mix of music...and that's a big market!
carolinaradio said:Today, they're playing one Christmas song every hour. I hope MY isn't planning on gradually easing in to an all-Christmas format.

It's very strange. They mix a lot of rhythmic stuff in to their playlist.
