My PD and I had this idea bout 10 years ago and then we both left Seattle...
Re-name the street KIRO TV is on -- if I remember correctly it's 3rd & Broad -- to J. P. Patches Way...
Bummer is if that were to happen, I bet KIRO-TV would MOVE!!! They seem more bent on "distancing" themselves from the clown than embracing ("that was a different era") kind of thing. Too bad those kids shows never earned any REVENUE for the station (NOT) or weren't profitable because of the extremely high price of talent (NOT)..... !!!
You know, it's crazy that KIRO-TV seems so ashamed of one of it's best jewels. JP Patches did more for that station than it's news department ever will (not to discredit them and their fine job, but really. What's the FIRST thing that STILL comes to mind after all these years among long time local viewers when they think of KIRO-TV?
It's rarely Gulstan Dart. Or even CBS.
3rd & Broad was the house that JP Patches built. And without JP Patches, KIRO-TV has been, sadly, another average CBS station. He brought a lot of color to that channel-something their news department rarely did. Lou Guzzo, Lloyd Cooney/Ken Hatch's editorials, News Out Of The Box or Point/Counter-point were as funny as a tax audit. And I think KIRO-TV should at least cut some time out in the mornings for JP Patches reruns and they should do it now. The gesture would be pretty worthless when he's gone.
News is important, but just as important is a smile to begin our days.
My all time favorite episode was Ggoorrsstt, The Friendly Frpl, who wants the fresh Friendly Frpl fodder from Fife, but instead, he gets the frozen Friendly Frpl fodder flown in from Ferndale. Far from fresh!
But every episode was a zinger, especially live on those snow days in Seattle.
A big DVD box set of all JP Patches episodes (or as many as possible, B/W and Color) would be one of the BIGGEST selling DVD boxes regionally. Throw in a big color picture book filled with behind the scenes interviews and a DVD of the most hilarious outtakes in the box and you'll have a SMASH success.
At the very least, KCTS would make a KILLING in it's pledge drive with this....
