J.P. Patches Update

My PD and I had this idea bout 10 years ago and then we both left Seattle...
Re-name the street KIRO TV is on -- if I remember correctly it's 3rd & Broad -- to J. P. Patches Way...

Bummer is if that were to happen, I bet KIRO-TV would MOVE!!! They seem more bent on "distancing" themselves from the clown than embracing ("that was a different era") kind of thing. Too bad those kids shows never earned any REVENUE for the station (NOT) or weren't profitable because of the extremely high price of talent (NOT)..... !!!

You know, it's crazy that KIRO-TV seems so ashamed of one of it's best jewels. JP Patches did more for that station than it's news department ever will (not to discredit them and their fine job, but really. What's the FIRST thing that STILL comes to mind after all these years among long time local viewers when they think of KIRO-TV?

It's rarely Gulstan Dart. Or even CBS.

3rd & Broad was the house that JP Patches built. And without JP Patches, KIRO-TV has been, sadly, another average CBS station. He brought a lot of color to that channel-something their news department rarely did. Lou Guzzo, Lloyd Cooney/Ken Hatch's editorials, News Out Of The Box or Point/Counter-point were as funny as a tax audit. And I think KIRO-TV should at least cut some time out in the mornings for JP Patches reruns and they should do it now. The gesture would be pretty worthless when he's gone.

News is important, but just as important is a smile to begin our days.

My all time favorite episode was Ggoorrsstt, The Friendly Frpl, who wants the fresh Friendly Frpl fodder from Fife, but instead, he gets the frozen Friendly Frpl fodder flown in from Ferndale. Far from fresh!

But every episode was a zinger, especially live on those snow days in Seattle.

A big DVD box set of all JP Patches episodes (or as many as possible, B/W and Color) would be one of the BIGGEST selling DVD boxes regionally. Throw in a big color picture book filled with behind the scenes interviews and a DVD of the most hilarious outtakes in the box and you'll have a SMASH success.

At the very least, KCTS would make a KILLING in it's pledge drive with this....

I agree with you Bongwater.

There is a book, though I think it is surpisingly a and sadly now out of print. http://www.amazon.com/J-P-Patches-N...4464769?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1194146393&sr=1-1

Also, there are very few surving tapes of the show. J.P. has explained that the tapes they used were very expensive and they used them over and over again recording over previous shows so not many of the shows are in existence any longer. A real tragedy. There is a DVD set available through J.P. at his personal appearances. I think you can get it at MOHAI as well.

I would like to know why Accoutrements, the company who made the J.P. merchandise a few years ago hasn't made any for Gertrude? We should have had a Gertrude bobble nodder and action figure to compliment our treasured J.P. toys. You would think that with the 50th Anniversary milestone coming up that they would have Gertrude merchandise out. I am sure Bob Newman would be thrilled. It is such a no brainer. When the J.P. merchandise was released Chris and Bob did an in-store appearance at Archie McPhee in Ballard and the place was packed and they were selling stuff like crazy. Same with the book. They did an in-store at Third Place Books in Lake Forest Park and I think they sold out. The popularity of these two beloved northwest Icons is seriously underestimated.

Hello all...I decided to join in on the talk here....I too am a Patches Pal. I have taken on a very big project here called "Patches Pals 4 Life" After reading some of the blog comments here I thought I should step in & let you all know about the show.

The show is a Benefit for the J.P. Patches Statue & of course...Children's Hospitals.

The night will consist of
Pat O'Day as the emcee
Headlining the night will be Local Cover Band Magic Bus featuring Spike O'Neill from The Bob Rivers Show on KZOK radio & Alan White of The Supergroup YES. The Opening band will be ,my band...The Aury Moore Band....But most importantly, J.P. & Gertrude will be there, to talk about the show & the statue.

It seems to me that this is going to be a very important night for all of the Patches Pals to be able to say Thanks to such a great man.

I wanted to let you know because I had discovered the thread & saw that their was discussion of a big show...Well this is what I have been able to put together. I hope it is something you would like to attend.
