Jacksonville Radio

Finding a great super PD sounds good.. But finding a great PD in your dream world who will work for Renda-Peanuts is another story. Finding a great PD, who will work for Renda-Peanuts and relocate? Good luck! How long has WMUV been on automatic with out a morning or midday show? Since the day it first launched because of no budget to hire anybody worth a nickel.

Well Chuck Buddy, here's another hat you'll be wearing for a very long time.
Have a drink on me.. you’ll need it..
Then again there’s plenty of talented unemployed Cox/Clear Channel/Renda folks who will work for nothing just to have a job.

Jeff don’t be mad because you got canned by Renda Broadcasting. The truth be known everybody get’s canned by Renda.. It’s like a badge of honor for the fact you’ve lasted as long as you did.. Like I said what goes around comes around and some day TR will show up to can more people.. just because their Disney land budgets or ratings couldn’t be hit. You watch.. you’ll be reading about it right here.

Bitter ... ignorant ... self aggrandizing ... just a few of the words that come to mind when I read posts from people that THINK they know what's going on in every nook and cranny of radio and most likely haven't done more than six continuous months of shifts outside their brother-in-laws' 1,000 watt daytimer 5 or 10 years ago.
I'm truly sorry that you either weren't talented enough or dedicated enough to survive the Corporate Holocaust that savaged radio for the last 15 years. But insulting those of us who have by assuming we'll work for whatever we can get only bespeaks your lack of maturity and shortsightedness.
I only pray that when radio's Phoenix DOES finally rise from the ashes, whiney little know-it-all malcontents like you will still be scanning my Twizzlers and Liv-a-Snaps at Walgreen's as well as posting half-truths and flat out lies on this board to appease your guilt and professional inadequacy.

Grouchy ol' Bear headed back to The Lair

Preach on brother! Ditto. Going on almost a century here.

If you bitter heads would have directed even HALF of your energy to hone your talent as you do on this board I think you may have made it past the paxon and jacor days.

I meant to imply the current crop of radio managers are like coal miners, they’ve raped and stripped the radio landscapes stealing any last nugget they can get their greedy little paws on. as loyal hard working creative people are abused, lied to and taken advantage of. I mean radio people will eat more bull and keep going because of their love of radio. And I some how believe the current crop of characterless, deceitful, dirty skunk mangers/ownership know they can get away with murder simply because their people have so much passion for the industry they love.

Radio has become a heartless & soulless business. And for what? So Mays can pocket another 8 or 9 million or some chicken heart local manger can make bonus while his or her people starve and wonder how they’ll feed their families or make a mortgage payment.

Pump and dump that’s radio.. And what’s next? National morning shows to replace morning or midday shows.. eliminating more jobs.

Oh I’m like many here..I've watched more lives ruined while some ignorant stupid fat cat spins a web of more lies for a golden parachute and the luxury of driving a new Mercedes ..Oh like were all really impressed.

Fat cats also believe their own spin and think they’re the most important people on the face of the planet. Until the ratings go down that is, then they run like cowards and point fingers because the foundation they’ve built isn’t real.. it’s all façade.. a fake image derived from the darkest side of their insecure little egos. It’s easy walking around acting like a big man or woman, oh so full of confidence and big ideas and words.. Oh yes we can’t forget all those big words.

But the over inflated ego and fake image doesn’t match the real very small person inside. Seems like they’re making up for something?…something really small…

Just so we don't piss off any coal miners, I think Pocket Radio meant "strip miners". Those are the guys that come in and take evrything and leave nothing of value behind.

When you think about it, air talent is more like the definition of a coal miner. We come to work everyday not knowing weather or not the tunnel is going to cave in today! But, we keep showing up because we love our chosen profession. Right?

Gee and I thought Renda was billing the BIG BUCKS so why wouldn't they have a 100,000 salary for a new gator county PD? Because it's RENDA. The poor boys cheap channel.

Good Luck Jeff

Your friendly neighborhood Maestro installer.

VT, you always seem to admire what you really don't understand.

Why the random figure of 100K, vt? I'm pretty sure Jeff wasn't making that when he left. Just because you MAKE money doesn't mean you must SPEND money. TR's approach to business is conservative, that's why he has never sold any of his stations, nor has he pissed away money on worthless properties like CC, Cox and the the other Death Star companies.
If you don't like the guy, don't work for him ... oh, wait ... that's been taken care of.

You'd be wrong Brother Bear. Paid a 7 million for WSOS for a St Augustine station that makes no money. It cost more to run the dam thing than it bills. WMUV is also a loser. Both stations hurt Renda's Jacksonville cluster selling efforts and are a drag on tony’s budgets. Gator hits budget every month but as budgets go up! that won't be the case. Lite hits most months. Both stations pay the bills. Maybe Jeff got canned because of cost cutting. Beck can program 4 stations. Gator and Lite require the most attention. The rest are hands off... just shuffle the music and promos. WMUV is jockless except pm drive. WSOS voice tracked except am drive. Beck has time he just drives a desk, does nothing on air and hides behind a computer most of the day.

Since the hatchet man Spurgeon arrived, they’ve been dropping like flies over at Renda for a while now. I wonder who's next? There isn’t many left to pump & dump.

Pocket, I said he never SOLD a radio station. SOS and MUV are works in progress, and just because the path chosen doesn't jibe with your Strategic Action Plan doesn't mean they should be written off as failed ventures.
What makes you think Gator wont continue to meet and exceed budgets like they've BEEN doing? It makes me think you may not be fully aware of the current state of affairs at CC/WQIK.
Gator didn't start cranking money out overnight, and it's no coincidence that didn't happen until Spurgeon and Beck took over a wheezy, Model T cluster and started tuning it up and making it win. Lite went from good to great, Gator went from nowhere to a real player in the market, and SOS and MUV are under construction. What do you want from them that makes you so negative and bitter?
Renda's Jacksonville cluster's best days are yet to come, and if that means changing PD's or jocks than that's what will happen. It's part of growth and progress ... concepts that are odious to people that just sit around and wait, do the same failed things over and over and HOPE for different results. THAT my friends is the definition of insanity.
Just because some personell moves may not suit your liking doesn't mean they aren't for a good reason. You simply aren't cognizant of them.

SOS and Muvin are not "under construction" they are already constructed and what they are is... well what they are, bad stations, EJZ has been around a long time and been doing well on it's own long before gary or chuck. Gator was at the right place at the right time.. Jax can support 2 country stations and since rooster was on it's way out it was a good time for gator, and Jeff did well with it.

Jenny - You can say with 100% certainty that there will never be changes at SOS and MUV? I wish I had your prescience and insight to be so bold. It's arrogant to think NOTHING will change in this market.
Have you listened to EJZ closely since Chuck and Gary came on board? They play some pretty fresh newer music and aren't the elevator music station so much anymore (SOS fills that niche). Yes it was doing well, but now it's doing better in the ratings and pulling revenue. As far as Gator's timing, the CC powers knew they were coming to Jax, so they put all their country eggs into one basket at QIK and let Rooster whither on the vine.
Don't take this the wrong way, but yours is a recurring theme on the North Florida board - thinking that nothing will ever change. When you think nothing will, you'll be consumed by it when it does ... and left in it's wake to complain and whine about the people and circumstance that affected it.

Wouldn't it be great if we knew who was right? If we knew what was going to happen with Renda? No longer the one station owner .. this ownership has become a contender. I'll let those of you who care banter back and forth about how viable a contender they might be or won't be.
Frankly, it sort of gives me hope that something LOCAL will continue in Jacksonville. Big owners selling out or selling part or just scratching their heads tends to make me nervous. I just want to hear the music I like and a local voice telling me that even thought the traffic is bad.. the music is not. No, I don't care for distant voices attempting to crack jokes that aren't funny or be vulgar.. which also isn't funny. I'm going to give them all a chance to make my ride in the car what I want it to be .. radio wise.
And, optimistically speaking, I think they will. But, if they all choose another "road" .... I don't have to follow along.

All Gator needed was a morning team that clicked. The former WAPE show was all about luck and had little to do with Chuck or Spurgeon, other than writing checks and relationships. Jeff and the team did everything else for Gator and deserve a lot of credit for a job well done well. Jeff got screwed just like John, Eddie and so many more. I’d need ten fingers and all my toes to count them. Being good and great is a fine line to walk and a measuring stick of great means nobody will last their including Chuck & Spurgeon Given time they'll both run out of gas and will be all used up and tossed out like the rest.

Don’t fool yourself WQik is not going away, they'll make changes too and will make a come back. Hitting budgets is great but acts like a curse for the following year. Something goes wrong in the minds of corporate, their fangs come out and the greedy little grubs demand much and set unrealistic budgets. So when budgets are missed enough times the blood boils in Tony’s veins the elevator goes to the top and pressure is applied, more people get fired. Lives are once again destroyed and the cycle starts all over again. TR shows up unannounced and some poor sucker signs on as the new GM. I wish I could make this up but I can’t it’s fact and does happen this way. It’s more like a home for insane and mean people. Can’t be much better over at CC or Cox except maybe people make a living wage and the insurance is better.

Radio is in the toilet. Revenues have been flat and going backwards. Yes in some pockets this isn’t the case. Enjoy the peaks and watch out for the valleys. More voice tracking and a voices from some distance places are the trends.. The local radio star will be rare. I’d also expect agency business taken over the internet cutting out commissions for local reps.

With more gadgets on the way and “wimax” wireless internet access in the car. I don’t see things getting much better for radio. It won’t go away and people will still listen but fore sure the market will be tough. Shares will continue to shrink along with TSL and average quarter hours.

My advice is stop drinking the Kool-Aid and open your eyes.

Ya don't ditch the one you brought to the dance -- without Jeff I hope gator takes a nose dive. He was the force that got that station to where it is. Good luck Jeff

Judging by how consistently well WGNE has performed over the past few trends, I don't think they have to worry about your so called "nose dive."

"The force that got the station where it is today?" Does one person just complete that task?

No "I" in team my friend.

Jeff Davis

Jeff,

You did a great job with WGNE, both in Daytona and Jacksonville. I heard the station on several occasions when I was within signal range. Damn impressive, especially on what I assume was a less-than-substantial budget.

We haven't talked for years, but you know me. Think back 13 years ago to K-Country in Ocala. Kramer hired me to do weekends & fill-in for a few months until I took off for WSOC & Star 104.7 in Charlotte.

I also have incriminating tapes of you as a "baby DJ", playing disco music on Saturday nights, back when 93.7 was still Z-93. But don't worry...I won't share 'em with anyone :)

I agree bear. One person doesn't make the team. As a start up Jeff put things in place and built on what he had. They'll find someone to take his place or chuck will guide the ship. And the trends are very good! Now the morning team is surely a big plus and really launched the station to the next level. After 11 years with WAPE they have a strong following and would be hard to replace.

Let's not forget that alot of the reason WAPE had a successful morning show for years was because of the direction of Cat Thomas and Hoyle Dempsey. Let's not get too carried away thinking how great we are. Other than 96.1 last time I checked renda never had much in the way of direction or call out research.

Well vtdude I have to agree with your dislike of Renda Broadcasting. Fumbles has got to be worth a few millions. But I’ve noticed with Fumbles ambitions people seem get crushed along the way. It’s like a herd of angry elephants charging down Atlantic Blvd.. The elephants arrive at their destination but assets and people are crushed in the process. That’s Renda Broadcasting, Fumbles gets what he wants but people get hurt along the way. That or his corporate Flunkies think they know, but know nothing and screw everything up. LOL

Though it can’t be better over at CC or Cox.. Except maybe the insurance is better.. or once upon a time they had better resources.
