Jacksonville Radio

vt, just who was the direction provider at EJZ? The one constant there has been Arthur Crofton. What is it, 18 years, God knows how many PD's and GM's and consultants, and The Rock of Crofton holds the vanguard to the Renda cluster?
I never cease to be impressed at the amount of Haterade you and pocket chug from the cooler.
And because I choose to be optimistic AND pragmatic, you accuse me of 'drinking the kool aid'.
Sorry you washed out of radio for whatever reasons, but have you taken a look at yourselves before throwing stones in childlike tantrums?
In the words of Dr. Zaius, "Don't look for it, Taylor ... you may not like what you find."

Dr. Zaius said "Don't look for it, Taylor ... you may not like what you find.

And Taylor said:

"We finally really did it!! You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God...damn you all to hell!" Cox, Clear Channel and Renda!

Bear.. That's the spirit. Keep 'em flying...

"The one constant there has been Arthur Crofton. What is it, 18 years, God knows how many PD's and GM's and consultants, and The Rock of Crofton holds the vanguard to the Renda cluster"

Bear, Crofton is old and sounds old too.. you mark my words, soon he'll be tossed out on the street with the rest of them.

Taylor said: The flags of discontent. Never trust anyone over thirty. or any radio manger. LOL

pocket - Go back to the 70's and 80's ... there's no place for you here in the future. Radio is what it is ... You say Crofton is old and sounds old ... Have you heard yourself or read your posts? It's the bitterness and lament of someone who became obsolete through complacency and an entitlement mentality - one of the many who feel radio OWES them something, and in the meantime not only grew old but also grew irrelevant.
I'm not so naive as to think I wont be on my way out one day, but I will sure as hell fight to stay ahead of the rapids as long as I can, keep my head on a swivel, and will pray I don't turn into a curmudgeonly old bat that does nothing but complain and become a parody of himself.
Think Crofton IS old and sounds old? He brings consistently good numbers and fat revenue after 18 years, as well as something you have no familiarity with ... class and professionalism.
pocket - I WILL keep 'em flying, because up here with the eagles beats stuck on the ground with the chickens!

Wow. You guys keep on complaining radio can't find good talent with their tiny budgets.

I drive back & forth from Orlando to Gainesville to spin for 2 hours 3rd Sunday of every month. Everyone I've talked to, even fellow radio guys, says I'm nuts for doing it for free. I even volunteer for shifts on a College station in Orlando. I've been doing both for 3+ years for the love & fun. Oh yeah. Both stations are not CC, Cox, Renda, or CBS...

Am I really crazy? I'm already thinking of hittin' up the Jacksonville market. My style matches Movin' 100.7 in so many ways...

Bear just wait and see what happens.

The future of radio is the internet and not am/fm or HD. And trust me it's not streaming, banner ads or some dude playing the same 300 songs. Hint there won't be any dude, or Bear for the matter.

Dr. Zaius: "Don't look for it Taylor, you may not like what you'll find."

Reading what you just said pocket reminds me of the days when Tom Murphy , Ed Fairbanks, John Dalton, Hoyle, Rick Ryder, Patty, and other great legends in Jacksonville were on the air.... I wonder if they thought the same thing when they were on the air, or if they saw if coming... Just wondering because you seem to know so much about the future.

If Steve Jobs was summated to the boardroom of Clear Channel, Cox, Saga, Renda and their clones. It might go like this.

Steve plunks himself into a chair and slowly starts to spin in circles. Saying as he turns, tell me, tell me what’s wrong with this place. And before anyone could reply, he’d abruptly burst out: "It's the products. The products SUCK! There's no sex in them anymore.'"

If you want to see the future of radio, try looking at the industry trends now. And not the ones you’ll find in Arbirtron.
Radio revenues are flat and have been going backwards for sometime. I know the Renda inbreeds will say look at Miller Kaplin? Renda is doing great. Renda is getting a bigger share, but total radio revenues are flat and decreasing.

Adults 18-34 (radio’s future) are turning away from radio. Walk into any office these days and you’ll see the 18-34’s wearing their ear buds and plugged into ipods.

Arbitron says the amount of people who listen to radio at work through their computer over the internet has grown from 12% to 20% in one year. The radio inbreeds will say, ya but they’re still listening to radio.. And ya listeners have an unlimited amount of choices and not just Am/Fm

Brenda Mathew’s midday host of Magic in Orlando got her walking papers. Clear Channel said honey, It’s voice tracking and a cut in hours or nothing. And just like that Brenda is history. This is not that unusual Clear Channel is cutting out midday shifts. And if Clear Channel can do it, so will Renda and the rest of the clones.

The industry is in the toilet and the corporate manglers are in survival mode So that means more cuts to protect short term profits and their quarterly bonus check. More voice tracking is the trend. It’s a tough market! I’d expect commissions paid to reps will be cut and agency business will be done via the internet eliminating the rep altogether. Technology and internet have changed everything forever. Radio is in need of innovation, now! And so far the only answer the corporate manglers have come up with is running in circles and continuing to make cuts.

It’s going to be a slow painful ride to the bottom. And that’s when change will come to radio. Problem is anybody creative and worth a nickel will be driven out of business.

Is everything okay, pocket? The despair and bitterness of your every entry bespeaks the same emotion in the letters of lost explorers at the Pole, or even doomed German soldiers at Stalingrad.
Your grasp of the entire fire sale going on at CC is at best a bit flimsy. They have backed themselves into a corner through greed and avarice and now must gnaw their own limbs off in order to make the bottom line look as good as possible to prospective buyers. It happens in the REAL world every day ... a world that you have no doubt lost touch with. Renda is in no such dire financial straits.
Your prediction about internet radio is as accurate as the statement you made to start this topic - that things here are really boring and there is a lack of interest from this 'group'. Once the honchos over at Cubeville figure out their minions are listening online, they will dispatch their Geek Squad and dispense of all online listening necessities.
You give radio's great unwashed multitudes of listeners too much credit for being tech saavy and craving satellite or HD. As their lives are becoming more complicated and difficult, they will long for (and turn to) the simplicity and beauty of terrestrial radio.
As you turn to the last resort of the truly ignorant and disenfranchised (name calling) and refer to anyone who disagrees with you as 'inbreeds', let me suggest to you that Darwinism is operating in all it's cruel splendor ... the weak of heart, feeble of mind, and just plain old inept and are dead or dying off. Your death rattle is a nuisance to those of us building the future.

Bear let's watch and see what happens, ok. We can both read all about it right here.

In the mean time I'm going to pour myself another big toll glass of ice cold
Kool-Aid. It's my favorite drink you know.

er, y'all lost me when you mentioned Patty and Jax radio legend in the same sentence. Huh?

Count me among those who had fun in radio for about 7 years, made some friends, a little money (literally), and then got into another career. I am not bitter, but sure, I've got a bunch of ideas to implement when hell freezes over and someone pays to hear them! haha

I like reading the discussions more than contributing, because many of them lately are purely business-related and/or anti-corporate. I didn't work for any major radio groups, so I won't even get into it, because I don't know what goes on, other than what colleagues shared with me over the years.

But anyway. meanwhile in Jacksonville...

Sunny exposed the business today when Woody tossed to Greg Parker for traffic...and someone named Kelsey did the reports.

I hate whan that happens! ;-)

I've also heard some gross (and I mean that in more than one way) instances of NOT hitting John Tesh on time. Apparently the new automation doesn't have an auto-fill/backtime feature.

But it's OK. Errors are made, computers freak out, bloopers happen. In the words of Greaseman, "I don't mean nuthin'!"

In other Jacksonville personnel news, has anyone listened to Chris Rhoads--formerly of WHTQ--on The Eagle? I haven't, which is why I am asking.

Hey Brother Bear why don't you stick to just reading your John Grisham books. No one on here really cares that your vocabulary is so varied or that you have some limited knowledge of history. It seems the only time you have an opinion on here is when someone else brings something up. Did you ever jump in and post that Jeff Davis was let go at Renda? No. There's was no post from you until "pocket" commented on the Jeff Davis untimely firing. Strange how CBS's Dan Mason has to make the rounds on the talk circuit trying to convince others in the business that as he puts it "commercial radio is not dead". You both need to pull your head out

LOL.. I didn't get that eaither .. Patty a Jax radio ledgend?? not.. maybe rick tracy (even though he was an A**) Maybe Patt Garrett from the old KOOL.. maybe Arf (Kinda) of course Greaseman... listened to him when I was 9 yrs old.. had no idea what he was taking about though..Robbie Rose i'd say a recent ledgend made a name at Rooster... but Not Patty..sorry...lol I lived in Jax 30 years listened to Jax radio for 22 of them.. even woked in it a while there, before moving to bigger markets.. Now done with it :) But I know Jax radio, still come home once a month to see mom.

Pardon the digression but perhaps we can use a little comic relief here. Some of these posts are getting waaaay too serious.

Anyway, speaking of Patty Hayes (sp?) it brings back a memory I had when I first heard (her). I guess this is now over 10 years ago, I had transferred to Jax as my job responsibilities changed. My new manager (mid 30s) was driving me around town getting me acquainted with things and Patty was on the radio. Sam Kavaris was on too discussing sports. I was told right then and there that everyone listens to Rock 105 and everyone watches Channel 4 News as they were around forever.

When I heard Patty, I thought "she" was a gay guy. She just sounded like a feminine guy to me. I swear this is a true story. For years I thought that until I saw her pic in the paper one day. I guess perceptions are everything and the same can be said who we consider radio legends. It's just a personal thing.

Everyone did listen to 105 and everyone did watch JXT.. funny how things change.. Rock ain't what it was then again neither is channel 4 after losing there network affiliation they are really nothing then again same can be said for 105..

I remember when everyone listened to Y103 (now I think it is "the point") and the Mighty 690, APE (am) and watched WJXT with Debrah Gianolis (SP) and George Winterling... way way way before Mary Bear.....

or Tim Deegan and Donna.. oh and Dan ( I know they are channel12)

Wow I think I'm old.

Pocket and VT are just poor bitter ex Renda employees! Jeff was apparently a great guy but he didn't want the new morning show and made it clear to them. Thus when their numbers continue to rise what did you think would happen.

THIS IS A BUSINESS!!! The idea is to make money. Unfortunately people lose their jobs because of budget cuts, lack of performance etc. This happens everyday in every market. GET OVER IT.

Has Renda and Tony made mistakes of course, but because he Voice tracks on WMUV and WSOS he is evil. Guess what CC is the voice track king!!

Both VT and Pocket most likely have NO, NONE ZILCH idea of what is going on behind the doors at Renda. All they can do is complain like spoiled brats.

GET A LIFE! RUN AWAY FROM THE LIGHT, RUN AWAY

wcrzx, well see? time will tell. Though, nothing better than reading all the drama from the Renda crowd. If it wasn't for Renda, you guys might be boring and you just can't buy this kind of entertainment anyplace.

In the mean time I'm going to pour myself a big tall glass of
ice Cold Kool-Aid. Walmart had a special 3 for a buck. LOL

Is that where you buy yours?

Oh wait I think I smell Bear flatulence.
