Jeff Roper - how's he doing?

Quote from Tina B

"By the way, I couldn't resist but to comment on radiochicks three reasons Roper could never be successful... While I know we eat and drink radio, try not to give the listener enough credit to (A) know or care what happened to this guy in Charlotte a number of years ago, I'm in the biz and I'm not sure myself! (B) think that this guy had anything to do with another personality getting their walking papers, and last but laugably not least, hold this new air talent up to standards of a mega-talent that died 6 years ago. " From Tina B

Hi Tina,

I think part of the problem with radio these days is we don't give the listeners enough credit. Radio is fan based, radio is personal, radio is part of our listeners daily lives ... they deserve credit and validation for their feelings. I found the articles on WXII.com to be a very interesting "study" on how our fans feel about radio. Check out WXII.com and search the site for WTQR .... you'll get about 25 articles from the last 6-7 years .... at the bottom of the article is a comment section and it is very interesting to see how our listeners feel and express themselves.

Certainly every station has it's handful of ole' faithfuls.. A station as old as TQR certainly has more than it's fair share that's why it's no suprise they would have as many articles and responses on a TV station website. My point is much like the request line theory. My first midday job about 13 years ago I remember running into the PD's office frequently telling him of all the new records we should be playing because I was getting soooooo many calls about them. Reality is very few listeners actually ever take the time to "engage" or call the radio station. I once heard a statistic that the percentage of listeners that actually call a radio station is in the 3-5% range. Filter out the radio junkies, competitors and competitors families on that TV website and I'll bet only a fraction of the responses are from actual diary totin' listeners.

I read a lot of responses regarding the firing of Eloise. I'm willing to bet the majority of real, not industry posters who claimed outrage are the same listeners who you'll hear winning tickets or a prize on WTQR in the next couple of months. They will show up at your remotes and complain about your competitor but the next thing you know the competitors bumper sticker is on their car, not yours. The world is worried about paying their mortgage and keeping their job, not what Roper did in Charlotte 5 years ago or how much he doesn't sound like the late Big Paul. People want to be entertained and the minute they aren't they will hop to the competitor.

I couldn't agree more Radiochick that radio is indeed fan based, radio is personal and it is a part of listeners lives... I'm simply making that point that RADIO is a part of their lives and that includes many stations. in case you haven't seen your stations duplication numbers lately (applys to all stations). Bummer ain't it.

I totally agree. Now that this has all been laid out for us, we no longer need to discuss anything. People put stickers on the car from stations they do or don't really like and don't call or they do but it's not real and it's the competition's sticker. If it's your sticker, it doesn't mean anything. Nobody who says they listen has a diary. Stop pandering to the P1s because they don't matter one bit, no matter how passionate or vocal they are. People love radio like a goat loves a chute that delivers petting zoo feed. The goat doesn't care from which chute the feed is delivered, as long as it gets to eat when it is hungry. I knew it! It's been said here a lot before, but it's worth saying again:

I've never been wrong. Look it up. Boo to the YA!

If the folks gettin the TQR stickers worried about Eloise or WTQR, they woulda been listening. You cant have it both ways. Either TQR is the out of touch dinosaur, or TQR is the heritage station people love regardless. But wait, those prize pigs have a Wolf remote to find so they can get a free Hardee's burger!
