Jerry Fisher, Local Legend?

I didn't mean afraid of going to a bigger market, I meant afraid of upsetting the apple cart of leaving the comforts of home.

I know I got in that rut when I was working at the Herald. I love Central PA and miss it. If I didn't leave, I would still be making about 20-25K a year and working my butt off more than 40 hours a week.

Now I work 40 hours a week and make over 50K a year.

That is what I meant.

I know you worked for Clear Channel AJ and I know I called you when we had the night opening in Gainesville Steve.

Enjoy

As much as there can be a "Local Legend" Every single person who has grown up within a hundred miles knows Jerry's voice. That might qualify Jerry as a local legend. I heard from somebody once that its hard to grow up in the shadow of your dad if your dad is well known. I think that Jerry has made his own way. He could of latched onto the coat tails of his dad but took his own path and does well. I hate sports. I was a bad college wrestler and did it to get the cheerleaders. I remember getting tossed into doing play by play at the last minute a number of years ago. I had no idea at all what I was doing. I decided to mimic a hybrid of Harlow and Fisher. I thought that was what a sports guy was to sound like.

I never met Jerry but have heard him thousands of times on thousands of broadcasts so that might qualify him.

The person who told you that probably had a famous dad and was trying to bolster his own self-image.

I'm not going to comment one way or the other on Jerry's ability as a broadcaster. But anyone who thinks that his last name has not opened doors for him that would have otherwise been closed is living in fantasyland.

It appears I have started quite the little discussion here. Let us look at what the word "legend" really means.

By definition, a "legend" is most known as being something that gets handed down from generation to generation. It can be stories or events. We use this word to describe certain people because they have done something that the people (or the generations) around them remember, giving them a "fame" of sorts and then these things are passed down.

I've read all of your posts and have seen some of the names you listed. Think about why those people came to mind. Is it because they have been around for a long time or because they did something you remember or heard about? Or is it a combination of these things?

When I think of local legends (in radio), I do not think of Jerry Fisher. I think of Tod Jeffers, Kevin Nelson, Wendy Williams, Fran Fisher, and Roger Cory (sp?). Why? Not just because they were on the radio for a long time or because they have been on the radio for a long time, but because they all have done something that makes them memorable. These people have worked on the radio and done things on the radio that made or makes the listener want to hear what they have to say. They make people want to talk about what they are talking about.

They have also had or have incredible ties in their respective localities where their stories are told over and over again to people from all walks of life. And none of these legends I mentioned made it to their status on daddy's last name. They've all achieved radio greatness because they were/are great at what they did/do on the radio.

As for ameyer...well sir, you know my name. Could be my first name or my last name. Does it really matter? I know who you are and what you do but it is not an influence on what I think about what you say. I would have the same opinion if you were completely anonymous to me. The "show your face" tactic gets thrown out a lot on boards like these in order to try and discredit someone. It is a cheap and immature tactic and it is dreadfully overused. Anonymous or not, my opinion means only as much as people want it to mean regardless of identity.

I kinda ride the fence on this one. I sort of at least like to have an idea about someone's background so I can attempt to determine if their comment holds any merit. like I said, I'd hardly want the station janitor to comment about the ins and outs of programming a successful station. But background does not automatically qualify anyone either. Not so long ago, I had the title "consultant" for a certain station and why don't you ask the staff what they thought of my opinions? Actually...you don't have to....you already know because they have said so on this very board. Do I still think I was right...sure I do! Do I think they are wrong??? Not necessarily...there are a million ways to skin a cat (or program a radio station) and my way was no more right or wrong than theirs...just different.

So its nice to know if there is a chance you have any clue what you are talking about...but sometimes even if you have the background, people will still think you are full of it...so it really doesn't matter does it? ;D

Becker obviously you didn't read EVERY post or you would have saw the one that said you don't need to tell me your name but it would be nice to know what makes you an "expert". As Steve said enlighten us a little as to what you know and then the comment or opinion has a little bit more validity to it. I agree that an opinion is an opinion and everyone is entitled to one, but when you are gonna slam someone based on an ad you saw in a magazine it might help to be able to back up your thoughts...does that make at least a little more sense as to what I am trying to get it. I'm not slamming you for your opinion just don't think it is fair to fling crap and have nothing to back it up with.

And as for knowing who you are...I sit and rack my brain (what's left of it) I have no idea who you are.....

I DID read every post. I just simply chose to not address the issue of my identity which does include more than just my name.

However, I will tell you this: I've been here since before you were born. I was here before JERRY FISHER was born! I listen to just about every kind of radio but favor the news-talk of WRSC in the morning (I also like that Dave Ramsey guy too) and the oldies of WOWY through the day. I know a hack when I hear him/her. Jerry Fisher may be local but, he is NOT a legend. Feel free to refer to my previous post which discusses the definitions of "legend."

Yep, it's confirmed. Jerry Fisher is a local legend after all.

So much in fact, that while listening to WRSC this morning, I heard someone call in asking for Jerry. The guy didn't even know what station Jerry is on. Yup, sounds real legendary to me.

Must have thought he was Kevin Nelson.

Apparently, you have some kind of a problem with radio fans. Perhaps you are in the wrong line of work.
