Jhani Kaye Leaving KRTH/KTWV

Just heard there was a big meeting at CBS on Wilshire. Jhani Kaye is apparently retiring. Those are some big shoes to fill!

Can you hear the wind whispering that major changes are on the way at CBS Radio in Los Angeles for a couple of stations? Just asking first to beat the crowd! Anybody got the story on what's going on behind the office doors? Is another radio company offering him another gig?

From AllAccess:

"I'm electing to follow other passions in the entertainment industry."

Which usually translates to "I've been cut loose without warning and am keeping a good face on it." Sad, since he's really brought KRTH back to life over the past few years.

I'd heard that Kaye has been wanting to retire for some time now, but CBS kept throwing money at him. Either he's finally retiring, or CBS figured they've thrown enough money maybe?

Made a few calls. Seems that CBS wanted him to stay. What he has planned only he knows. I heard it was an emotional meeting and took the staff by surprise.

Maybe it's me, but hasn't he done this before?

I think he did when he left KOST in 2005. I'm not sure if that was voluntary or not, however.

This is a huge loss for LA. I really think that he really shaped the best stations in LA. The old KOST, KTWV with it's smooth AC format, KRTH. He really will be missed in LA.

Now for the predictions post-Kaye.

I, for one, believe that we could see Stella Prado, in some form, at KTWV or KRTH, more likely the former. Most of the KOST castaways have gone to CBS Radio in some fashion, and I highly believe that it will be the same story for Stella Prado.

I doubt any major changes are coming to KRTH. They are pretty stable and safe. If anything, they might add more 80s songs, but that's typical of classic hits.

As for KTWV, however, I think that a few changes could be in the offing there. I believe the station could shift more toward an AC format, and the on-air shifts could be changed around a little bit.

Kaye left KOST because he had a huge contract and they didn't want to pay him when it ran out. Plus they felt they could do it without him. Of course now KOST has only a few of those that were there when he was, and yes, many have gone to CBS, so anything with Stella Prado is possible, but I think they'll be looking for someone who can program both KTWV and KRTH. If they can't find a candidate, they'll look for 2 PD's, but only if they have to. I also think that The Wave is moving away from AC. They've increased the amount of Smooth Jazz since Christmas and seem to be seeing some minor gains in ratings for certain demos. The Wave does have an entire staff of women during the day and a new PD may want to change that, but I don't think so.

This is unfortunate. Jhani has done a wonderful job at KRTH and the station has really improved of late.

Not in THE sales demo, though.

While KRTH was Top 10 in 25-54 in early to mid-2012, it is now around 15th.

Jhani is a great programmer and a good person. A legend in Los Angeles radio.

He was given the task of trying to make two older skewing radio stations younger and that is always a tough thing to do.

A lot of times you are limited by the brands you inherit but Jhani rose to the occasion and did so with class and passion.

Doesn't change the fact that THEY think it has helped to add more smooth jazz back into the format.

The bigger question is whether this is just Jhani Kaye moving on or CBS economizing... or CBS taking a new direction with one or both of the FMs.

I do NOT want to start the format wheel spinning as I have no inside information about now and future formats. I just have curiosity... a well regarded spectator sport.

We can see that CBS is seeing wear on the Classic Hits formats. Chicago has no traction, and Philadelphia has gone frome the high 6's to the high 4's in the last three years or so (and barely remains in the top 10 25-54). KLUV in Dallas is out of the top 15 25-54 and revenues off 40% over a 6 to 7 year period. And so on. Of course, there are exceptions like KOOL and WCBS, but let's consider whether they now consider the long range potential of the format to be good.

And in a market like LA, softer AC, with or without Kenny G, is a questionable commodity. There's no way CBS is happy about lack of progress at The Wave.

Meanwhile, there are a number of spoken word initiatives and things like the astounding and profitable sports FM in Detroit... #1 on average in 25-54. And the new joint venture with Cumulus.

It all makes one think...

I'll throw a log on the fire: Spring book ends on June 19, ten days before he leaves. Just in time for a format change.
