Joe Benson out at KLOS?

wrsurocks said:
Considering Buchmann started his career in the shadow of rock-era KLOS sister WPLJ in New York, carrying the tagline "New York's Best Rock", I would say that has more to do with it than anything. He seems to have a penchant for heritage.

I also am very aware of the heritage of which you speak, having been born a mile or so from Rutgers' main campus..... New York's Best Rock; Where Rock Lives; L.A.'s Finest Rock; World Class Rock; Where the Music Matters; All About the Music; etc etc after a while it all becomes just words :)

BTW I now understand Uncle Joe will be relegated to weekend on air duty on KLOS

I am relatively new to the world of KLOS, being a recent SoCal transplant. I do like the station and I do not think Citadel is looking to blow up the format. Buchman did not leave Q104 and move west to find himself unemployed. I remember him back to the WBAB days, but I dont recall him being at WPLJ.

So, can someone tell me again why they hired Bob Moore again? I mean wasn't the idea to flip KLOS into a hot talk format - of course when most of the contracts run out? Sam Phillips has been saying her show will return to the FM dial soon....wonder which station that could be....?

By taking heritage personalities Joe Benson and Jim Ladd and relegating them in the background (Joe B to the weekends, Jim Ladd to overnights, Sun-Thurs) there is a definite message being sent. Out with the old, in with the new, whatever the new may be. Perhaps Buchanan doesn't like having personalities at the station that are bigger than he is?

And why is the new PD inserting himself into the on-air talent rotation? This is almost always an ego play and rarely is it successful. Rita Wilde, by contrast, gave up nearly all on-air work when she became the PD and she did a very good job for a number of years. In fact, her dismissal still has not been really justified by management.

SAD...I love listening to Jim Ladd when possible. That's awful news. Same for Joe (A great spirit, I have multiple 'signed' copies of "Uncle Joe's Record Guides" scattered around the house =) I've been listening a lot to Radio Paradise lately, as KLOS and KSWD seem to be moving in the same direction...Boring. Peace - JG

It's almost as if Clear Channel owns KLOS. Citadel is at least keeping KLOS "live" for most of the broadcast day. If CC owned them Jim Ladd would be gone and so would at least one more full timer. They'd be tracked except for maybe two or three shifts during the weekends too. What Citadel is doing isn't cool, but it could be worse.

By putting the PD on the air they save the salary that would be paid to another talent like Benson. Of course he's probably still under contract and that's most likely why he's still there. That and the fact that he's a heritage jock. But now days nothing is sacred. Look at what's happened at all the great stations here in LA and across the nation in the last ten years. They're being stripped of their personalities to save money. Money that just goes to the executives at these companies. After all, they need an extra house in Hawaii and another luxury car or two. The corporate mentality at these companies is now that the PPM is measuring ratings they really don't need jocks or much else except for music and some imaging pushing their websites. Like I said, it could be worse at KLOS, and perhaps it will be someday soon.

Radio Paradise is great, as is Radio Free Phoenix.

Citadel better than CC. Phew. Damning with faint praise. Cita-death has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. At 7 cents a share, it's circling the drain.

I heard that Citadel may sell off the stations they got from ABC. Trying to find the story, but can't remember where I saw it. But it was within the last few days. I'm going to go through my Ross on Radio and Taylor on Radio Info newsletters to see if it was there. But it could've been from someone else.

Could have been Jerry DelCaliano. He's been hammering away at Cumulus and Citadel lately.

Jerry DelCaliano mentioned it, but it was Tom Taylor that's been pushing that story...
