Joe FM

The new format is super. All of us on the previous thread were wrong, bigtime. This combination of rock and country? Who thought it could work? It works. Nothing new under the sun? Baloney. This is new and it's a breath of fresh air. I'm a believer.

Ummmm Yeah. Then if it's so super duper then why are letting the talent go.

Are you saying that they let all the talent go and that they're going jockless? I know that Rick Houston is gone, but do you really think they'd let everyone go?

Or maybe they're going jockless just for the weekend.

I would use the word “talent” loosely. This is exactly what Joe needed. It’s important for them to carve a niche out for themselves. Frankly they don’t have the stick to compete head to head with Froggy. I think this will do well and I too am a believer.

I wonder if this is a "radio guys" format--something we all think is kinda cool, but the great unwashed don't get... or don't think is cool enough to change what they're doing. This is something that has been tried off and on for the past 20 years--mostly in the South--but nobody's been able to survive on it aside from that one station down around Fredericksburg, Virignia. And this ain't the South.

The big question is whether it's going to cause the Bus listener to stop listening to the Bus, or the Froggy listener to stop listening to the Frog. Or are there enough "tweeners" out there to make it fly?

Marshall Tucker disappeared from the scene around 35 years ago. This is really going for a niche.

But, yeah, it does sound cool--for however long it lasts. Good luck!

Yeah, Jack, it's a "radio guy's" format. All the successful ones are. Thing is, it's like a pizza that's part mushroom and part pepperoni. After the first piece, the second doesn't matter.

This format is sophisticated and cool and easy to listen to. It has an intelligence that a college town deserves, with the populist roots that a rural county desires. It's like the best of Little Rock combined with the best of Austin.

And I love the always-up-tempo thing.

Jack, I am sure there is a plan to grab a listener from The Bus or the Frog but do you know that 75% of the teen population nowdays knows who CCR, Led Zepplin and ZZ Top are? This could be because marketing people have been resurrecting these songs over the past couple years for commercials or maybe it is because their parents listen to it...who knows...right now the 3 top formats are Top 40, Country and Classic Rock. Of course State College Arbitron won't tell you that but look at the PPM results around the country and you will see a trend!

Is Joe going to take away a piece of the pie from each, maybe! All in all I think Joe is trying to set itself apart from Froggy, give the State College market something new and fresh and something to talk about when they first came on the air and cut Froggy's number in 1/2...The Bus and Froggy may want to do a little C.Y.A cause I think Joe has stumbled onto something here!

I've only caught it for a few minutes here and there, so far. You must be glued to it, so I'll defer to your judgment. I'm rooting for them. Great folks.

New? This format was introduced in the early 80's on WHUN in Huntingdon. It was
a very upbeat tempo. The novelty wore off quickly as the country fans didn't want to deal with some the rock and likewise for the rock fans who couldn't stomach some of the country. I still have one of the bumper stickers promoting the NEW Rock/Country WHUN.

I was back in the area recently for a short visit and had a few minutes to listen. I'm still reserving judgement. I'm located in the south where it's not uncommon to hear Lynard Skynard, ZZ top and other select southern rock on a country station. I have noticed a huge difference in broadcast sound in general around here though compared to the SC area. Far fuller sound here that makes even a stock car radio come to life with any format.

I think they have a good base that could work.

I used to be a LOYAL 105.9 Joe Fm Listener and now I can not stand it! I Do not wish to hear Old Rock n Roll Mixed with my favorite Country Music of today!! It's Absurd and I hope they realize they lost ALOT of faithful listeners that were Loyal to Joe! It sounds like one HUGE mish-mosh and it is absolutely unlistenalble to my ears and many of my co-workers. So you people that think its "great thing" think again! It's NOT!

Yes, My friends and I have been listening to Froggy since Joe switched to their Mess of a radio. Even though I cant stand the Stupid frog clechays! They makes me feel like I'm listening to a childs channel (RIBBBBIT!). Thats what I loved about the old Joe Fm I didnt have to put up with The FROG!! (RIBBBIT!) but I guess I'd rather listen to that than a format that thinks classic rock songs sound good mixed in with todays country hits!! because it doesn't !!! so Give me the FROG anyday!

A lot of people that enjoy southern rock also enjoy country and a lot of people that enjoy country also enjoy southern rock. There are also some artists who make songs that fit in both genres.

I'm happy to see some creativity instead of the same old cookie-cutter radio stations. Joe should offer something that Froggy does not--and that's what they are doing. And the great thing is that you do have a choice between Joe, Froggy, XM, internet, ipod, etc. So I wouldn't get too worked up. Listen to whatever you enjoy the most.

I ENJOYED THE ORIGINAL 105.9 JOE FM!!

You know some of the southern rock I can understand even though I dont like it but I do NOT understand why they have to play such Hippy bands as Boston, Journey, Bad company or Forienger!! Thats what made me switch to the god awful FROGGY. I want to hear good COUNTRY Music NOT Hippy Music from the 1970s!! So I put up up with the Childish sounds of The Frogg for NOW! As My Bud Ken says "State College Radio SUCKS!!!" Maybe he is right. BRING BACK THE REAL JOE!

Umm? Some of The bands I refer to as "Hippy bands" in the previous post were rock bands that were from the early to mid 70s and were highly popular with males who had long hair and smoked weed and that is why I called them "hippy bands" ....I did NOT say they played at Woodstock.

I never had long hair and I never smoked weed.... but I like those bands. Am I still considered a "hippy"?
