I recall a TV appearance back in the 80s on Channel 7 which celebrated the 25th anniversary of KB's format change, and some of the big names from the KB Radio of the '60s were there, live. Joey was asked about his thoughts on Buffalo. I believe his comment was, "there's nothing wrong with Buffalo...that couldn't be fixed with a 50-megaton ******." The station immediately went to a break.
And yet, ironically, Joey's sense of humor became inseparable from the city's sense of humor for some of us.
There's no modern-day equivalent to the old monster AM signals when it comes to giving cities a cultural mouthpiece. For many of us, our view of NY City was shaped by WABC, and Chicago's by WLS. I'm sure it was vice-versa as well.
