K276EL 103.1 San Marcos

A car radio isn't the best way to test a signal. They will always give you the best results. A crummy radio will tell you if a station really has a listenable signal.

I did a signal test with my Sony FM/AM SRF-M35 Walkman yesterday and today, and I tested it in San Marcos yesterday, and in Seguin right now. I found that with my crummy radio..

In San Marcos-
-I picked up almost all Austin full power FM signals.
-Line-of-Sight signals - 92.1, 89.9, 103.5. (various others because of elevation)
-Strongest Austin signals - 89.5, 93.7, 94.7, 95.5, 96.7, 100.7, and 103.5.
-Weakest Austin signals - 101.5, 102.3, 104.9
-Austin Signals I could not get - 104.3, 107.7, 92.5. No 97.1 - it only works in my car.
-San Antonio stations I could pick up were 99.5, 105.3 and 107.5

In Seguin-
-I picked up only a few San Antonio full power FM signals.
-Line-of-Sight signals - 92.1, 92.9, 99.5, 103.5, 105.3, 107.5.
-Strongest SA signals - 92.1, 99.5, 101.9, 104.5, 105.3, and 107.5.
-Weakest SA signals - 89.1, 96.1, 97.3, 98.5, 100.3.
-SA signals I could not get - 88.3, 91.3, 92.5, 94.1, 106.7
-Austin stations I could pick up were 93.7, 94.7 and 103.5.

Keep in mind, my radio was not set on "DX"
It was set on "Local"

Thanks

Off the record: I am surprised how strong the KAMX 94.7 signal is, since the tower is in West Lake. Its blasting in like a local all the way down to Seguin. Pretty cool!

FYI-- These are all smaller Austin rimshots licensed to Taylor, Georgetown and Elgin respectively and have towers north or east of Austin to still put a signal over their communities of license.

And KAMX is licensed to Luling. I believe it has the biggest stick in West Lake Hills order to reach its COL which isn't that far from Seguin.

I never understood why KAMX did not change to just Austin when they moved to Austin for the ID. Where were they before they moved to westlake? I remember back in the day when KROX, KAMX was both "rimshots".

The FCC is relunctant to leave a town without its only broadcast service, even if the only sign of it is the top-of-the-hour ID.

I was very much aware of radio-locator. It is one of my favorite websites, but it doesn't give reception patterns for every radio station. I was not able to access the "non-user friendly" FCC site...until now. Thanks Fred.

I didn't know KROX was ever a rimshot. Are you speaking of the period when Giddings was the City of License? I remember from '95 to '99 the COL was Giddings. I didn't look at a coverage map back then, but it must have covered more areas to the east. I know you could pick it up in Seguin a lot better back then, and the signal really didn't fade until you arrived in San Felipe on I-10. Never really thought of it as a rimshot until now. Very interesting.

It also used to have a pretty good signal in San Antonio. It used to be good for something in the 1-2 share range there.

I lived on the southside of San Antonio in '98 and '99 and could pull it in. Kind of choppy, but perceptible.

Wow, their tower was pretty far to the east. Good stuff.

Do you remember the year they moved to West Lake Hills? Also, why did they downgrade from 100kw to the current 12.5kw?

I believe the move-in was in the 1999-2000 range. Also, the down-grade isn't quite as dramatic as it sounds. They downgraded only one class from a C1 to a C2. I would guess with the move to Westlake, they at least doubled, possibly tripled the population inside the 70 dBu signal.

If you have a walkman going around town, KBPA HD buzz kills K276EL I had to put it on 103.0 to get anything just to see how the station came in.

That's strange, because KPEZ's HD on 102.3 doesn't do the same to 102.7. I wonder if KBPA has increased their HD power

I've noticed this as well driving near Kyle. I can hear the hash on 103.1 and 103.9. Granted I am very close to the tower, but you shouldn't be hearing the hash bleed over like that. Another station that does this is KLTN in Houston. They kill KJOJ inside the loop.
