KABC-AM Cuts Most Of Local Lineup/ Sacramento's Armstrong and Getty to Join in 2020

While I appreciate the spirit of the inquiry, the point is somewhat moot. Air America was a terrible product that couldn't make a go of it except for the most liberal of localities (I know, I know, they got BOFFO ratings in... Oregon!).

The reason Air America was, to quote you "awful", was that the hosts were quite passionate and generally well informed but they were just not entertaining. They seemed to see themselves as crusaders rather than entertainers. Like fanatics in all areas, they attracted a narrow core following.

The opposite of "entertaining" in talk radio is "abrasive". That defines, in a word, Air America. It was often annoying.

I listened on occasion to Randi Rhodes, and she was often a "good listen". But I think she got drawn too deeply into the "mission" and forgot about having an enjoyable show.

Wow David as I was reading your post, as soon as you mentioned the word "abrasive" before I even saw the next sentence I immediately thought of Randi Rhodes.

While i didnt agree with randi rhodes politics i liked her. Very entertaining and good at what she does. She reminded me of lynn samuels on wabc in nyc whom passed away years ago.

Same can be said about stephanie miller for me. I did not agree with her politics but funny and entertaining to listen to. Reguardless of which side of the aisle u r on first and foremost you must be entertaining!

I think that she got more annoying as the end of Air America neared. I have heard from others who listened more than I did that the hosts had a sort of angry attitude at that point, and were given to feelings that Americans were dumb because they did not listen to them.

Could not agree with you more. My politics are 180 degrees different than Miller's, but I love listening to her, because she is ENTERTAINING.

Part of the startup problem was with shortimer Mark Walsh, I worked with him at GEnie back in the early 90's, and he moved from job to job. Never more than a year or so at one place.

Don't know how people like this keep getting high level jobs.

After dropping much of it's local lineup, KABC has added syndicated shows hosted by Dan Bongino and Andrew Klavan to its lineup.

The signal challenges of AM radio in Los Angeles, in addition to the malaise of AM radio in general will make any ratings growth at KABC difficult. These shows wil cost less and likely draw the same ratings as what is being replaced.

They did the right thing ridding themselves of jillian barberie. I like john phillips and randy but couldnt stand the mornin show with her. Therefore i hadnt put the station on after douglas mcintyre left mornings.

I really enjoy john phillips and randy together. They probably got rid of jillian to cut cost but hopefully it was cause she was terrible on talk radio. She is a talented lady and great on good day live on fox several years ago but talk radio not so much.

Now adding ktla news wont help there numbers and is a waste. Its to bad nothing can be done to help there signal issues. Thats the core of there problem. I wonder when and if they are sold what the new owners will do with them

But i do like the changes and do listen after a year of not.

Are you suggesting that by contrast, Hannity is an entertainer and not just a crusader? His show is 1000% hate-filled right-wing politics. There's no comedy, no fun, nothing that would qualify as entertainment beyond the adrenaline rush his base gets from hating liberals. You can try to defend and define it as entertainment if you want, but many people consider it something much darker.

Cmon dude and you cant tell me with a straight face lib shows like stephanie miller and bill press and the like arent full of hate for conservatives. If u cant admit that u have a problem.

Limbaugh has no comedy, no fun and the like. But those are not the only qualities of "entertainment".

Limbaugh is interesting and engaging, and his style is entertaining to millions.

"60 Minutes" has little to none of those elements, either, but it is entertaining due to the format, the style, the writing, the pacing and other elements.

The same goes for Hannity. Sure, he has a cause and a polarization, but if you are not a left-leaning listener, his style is also entertaining. It's a matter of personal preference. Outside of politics, I never found Seinfeld the least bit funny or entertaining, but that does not meant the show was not so for many others.

I would disagree with that.
While Limbaugh has a reputation for being an "angry old white guy," I personally found him more funny than several professional comedians (Jay Leno, Garrison Keillor, Bob & Tom), especially back in the 90s when they were all basing their material on Bill Clinton's indiscretions.

It was effin halairious in 98 when limbaughs peeps did a spoof of james carville and ken starr. It was very funny. It was fun times and great material during the clinton impeachment. Reguardless of what side of the aisle u r on it was very funny.

Thank you for confirming my long-held suspicion. You haven't sufficiently listened to the show to comment.

Rush listeners know that comedy is a constant theme and Rush goes out of his way to make it fun. He even has at least one professional comic that makes material for him to run on the show (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Shanklin) and of course he is quite funny himself. Liberals just don't like being the butt of his jokes. But the real butthurt comes from the final score:

Rush: currently approximately 600 stations, 30+ years on air
Air America: currently 0 stations, < 6 years on air

As i had heard it when air america went on the air they insisted there affliates air there entire lineup or none of it. Like you could not only air al franken if you wanted you had to air the entire lineup.

That seems like very bad business. You would think they would have learned from conservatives and the way they run there shows.
