KBIG-CCLA wimps out-AGAIN!

Is there a person on earth who gets excited by the whole "MY" thing?

"Wow, this RADIO STATION is cool. It's just like MYSPACE!"

Um.......no.

Just because MYSPACE is (actually, WAS....it's become passe) a popular website, does not mean slapping a "my" in front of your product means a hill of beans to anyone, anywhere. (Are you listening, MYKEARTH101.COM?)

This format "change?" ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Huh? MySpace is growing by leaps and bounds. Often now you'll even see new movies - for trailers - and new products set up their own MySpace. Its closest competion, Facebook, is also growing incredibly. Even Yahoo! (which is rumored to have turned down a $1 Billion dollar offer to buy Facebook) is getting into social networking now with their own new service called "Mash". It all makes Rupert Murdoch's $580 million dollar purchase of MySpace look cheap.

MyFoxLA is Fox 11's website.

Radio as we know it is dying not MySpace.

Not actually a format change huh?
Just a repositioning.

And how does My and Star exsist under the same roof?

I really believe Star will change next...

My main question is with or without DJs? Without them, they may be heading too close to Jack?

There will be deejays, I'm 100% sure of that. You may even hear some of the former KBIG airstaff survive into the new format, but that's not a given...

Back to the Title of this post. KBIG-CCLA Wimps out again..

Wasn't KBIG kinda of Wimpy anyways? I don't know how anyone can shed a tear over this loss. It wasn't like they were breaking new music. They sucked!

but at least they were unique which this new format is not

I do however think this liner is funny and ironic given KBIG's departure - "MY radio station is BIGGER than your radio station". I also hope the KBIG calls survive.

Why didn't they call the station L.A.'s Big 104.3 as they said in the start "my radio station is bigger than yours" Its better then the name My FM. Fresh is even a better name.

For everyone who feels like Scoot, GET OVER IT! If you want an exciting format change, get out your tapes of the launch of Pirate Radio or Jack. KBIG was a station that needed retooling, a refocus and sounded cluttered. The way they launched MyFm allows them the clear out the clutter and highlight the fresh mix of music. Bells and whistles would have been appropriate if they significantly changed demo or lifestyle target, such as Country or Rock to AC. What they did may not have sounded exciting to us radio geeks, but it was a smart marketing approach.

By the way, they did slip in a little fun attempting to throw everyone off in the beginning. Song one, Delilah has gotten plenty of airplay on KROQ....they followed it with Livin on a prayer, which suggested they could be doing some form of rock. In looking back over the last 24 hours of programming, the Bon Jovi tune definately didn't belong there and I'm sure will not be played in mid days again....but I'm sure people at Jack were wondering what's up.

Nuthin' like 'rattlin' the cages of your competitors, is there?

I do agree that the Bon Jovi tune right after launch could have been out of place, except that I've also heard some Pat Benatar on the station recently.

But it certainly did need to be cleaned up; there was no direction in a lot of areas beforehand, and dysfunctional doesn't begin to describe it.

Radio as we know it is dying not MySpace.

MySpace has become the "has been." Facebook is the new hot spot.

But even if you feel MySpace is still hip.....trying to catch a ride on MySpace by sticking "my" on your name.... Pointless. It just doesn't make sense. MySpace is called that because it is literally YOUR space on the internet. Created completely by the individual.

K-Earth 101 (or Fox11 or Channel 13), by contrast, is a corporate creation in the control of a handful of suits and stockholders...complete mass market, researched, de-personalized. There is nothing personal or "MY" about it. Even the DJs are not allowed to speak freely. It should be called "THEIR-K-Earth101!" (Or maybe Jhani's-K-Earth 101?)

What's next?

YouTube is popular. How about "YOUFoxLA."

Or, since Facebook is now big, we could have "FACE-EARTH 101."

Google is still king. Maybe "93.1 GOOG-FM. The music you "SEARCH" for!"

Well that's just the point. Since it sucked, there is the (very faint) hope that something new and non-sucky will take its place. Rather than something equally or perhaps more sucky.

WOW! a new slogan! GOOG-FM! You'd better Copyright that one before Clear Channel or CBS steals it from you! LOL!

Scooty! EXACTLY the point I was trying to make. Clear Channel has the most powerful commercial FM in town on 104.3. Instead of trading one puky, wimpy format for another, why not DO something with it?

Like a REAL country format, or active rock, or AAA or a decent oldies station, or a REAL progressive/alternative station (as opposed to "world famous"-just ask them! KROQ), or a real kick ass Spanish station, or a real FM talker, or, or, or.....

Not a: "see the new station, same as the old station!"

After dropping power over the RF exposure issues, KBIG is second to KYSR, although definitely the better due to transmitter location. KLOS's 63 kw is comparable, and so is the wave's 58 kw from up there. KCBS's 28.5 at about 500 more feet above terrain is functionally equivlent, too.

Like a REAL country format,

At best, there is likely only a sustainable 2.0 to 2.2 for the format in LA.

or active rock,

Let's wait to see what Star evolves into. Could be????

Another 1.1 share? I don't think there is enough of a lifestyle group for it here. KFOG in SF is only 9% ethnic (no break for Asian) and the market is less than 30% Black and Hispanic, half the LA level.

or a decent oldies station,

There is probably a classic hits (70's based like CBS-FM in NY) postion here, and KRTH probably can't do that due to peceptions on who listens to Jack. That is a format that will do well with 35+ Hispanics, since much of the music is relevant to English dominants and 35+ is far less Hispanic overall.

or a real kick ass Spanish station,

We have several of those now. There is no uncovered format, just general-market like fragmentation.

or a real FM talker, or, or, or.....

I would love to see KBIG's facility take the KFI format. Elsewhere, when a conventional talker moves to FM, the 35-54's expand dramatically. KFI does well in 25-54, but we will see n/t move to FM in more and more markets, like DC, New Orleans, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, Tallahassee, Phoenix, Chalrleston (SC), Panama City, SLC and other markets have shown.

KFOG is a great station for the bay area because it is musicly targeted for the area. It is very much simply a well done Classic Rock station. I don't believe it would do as well here. So Cal has a much stronger appeal for Alt/Modern Rock. Jack has done so well in this market compared to others because Kevin Weatherly understands this and has blended this flavor into Jack's playlist. The AAAs that we've had here were simply classic rock leaning AC stations and didn't target the market well.

To take an AM that bills so much and move it to FM would not be a smart move. It would be much easier to build 104.3 into something worthwhile than it would be to rebuild something huge on 640 AM. KFI would instantly be worth nothing compared to what it is now.

Don't know that I agree on that. It could work on FM. Don't move KFI, make it an AM/FM combo. Simulcast shows like Handel, John & Ken & maybe Rush and round out the schedule with some new edgy talent and it could work. It could be sold in combo bringing in even more dollars and expanding the brand.

Certainly it would generate huge ratings on FM, but it's unnecessary to create a combo. A combo would be a good idea if KFI was having signal and/or rating problems, but KFI is a 800 LB gorilla on it's own. It doesn't need the help. Sure, would the combo together have more listeners than KFI does now? Probably, but not significantly enough to increase the value of both stations.

Consider this. AM station values, especially in LA, are worth nothing compared to their FM counterparts....unless you are a station like KFI which has a huge audience and huge billings. Once you simulcast on an FM godzilla signal like 104.3, the AM will lose significant audience to the FM, lowering it's value substantially. If it's talk/news on FM you want, program something new and create two mamoth stations.

In radio formats, AC is among the cheapest to operate and Talk/news is the most expensive. I personally am not an AC listener, nor am I a fan of CC, but if the new 104.3 continues to be well programmed musicly as they are now, my guess is that ratings will look significantly better (PPM issues aside) and billings should follow. The billings and multiple value of the two stations has much more potential with seperate programming.

Never said it was necessary, just expanding on someone else's thought, but of course you're right, they don't need it. I don't feel it would water KFI down though. I think that it could expand the brand to an audience that doesn't go anywhere near the AM dial. I don't know that CC could create another mammoth station from scratch that easily, but then that is the challange isn't it? NT is very expensive, that was another reason to use KFI, everything is already in place. The weird part would be that KFI is a union shop and KYSR is not. But again I do agree with you, I was just expanding on a "what if"...
