Kennedy Center Changes

It's funny how some of us forgot that we grew up seeing that kind of phone on pretty much every detective show until Jim Rockford gave us the impoverished P.I. who needed to find a phone booth.

I first saw them on "Shazam!" Billy Batson and Mentor traveled in an RV and Mentor was always using one. He had to get the mobile operator tp connect him.

When "I Dream of Jeannie" was in reruns on whatever channel I was watching, the astronauts trained out in a rural area and a sergeant had one in a bag.

Disco primarily appealed to whites.
No, not at all. It primarily appealed to Hispanics. The success in New York City was due to the huge second and third generation of Puerto Ricans there, followed by the general market and some Blacks. Remember, other than the Gibbs / Saturday Night Fever, most of the artists were Black or Hispanic or European (think Georgio Moroder, "the Father of Disco").

Mexico City still has a well rated dance based format FM, and a number of other markets from Buenos Aires to Lima have some dance / disco presence.

I'm surprised to see George Strait involved with this. Stallone and Gene Simmons, I fully expected.

It's perfect for Strait. He just shows up and doesn't perform or speak. He'll gladly do that.

Previous inductees include Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks, and George Jones. He's in good company.

The big question is who will perform in his honor. I fully expect Garth to be there. Same with Stapleton.

"According to Federal Election Commission records reviewed by MeidasTouch, singer Gloria Gaynor -- best known for the 1978 hit 'I Will Survive' that has long been embraced by the LGBTQ+ community -- has donated thousands of dollars to Republicans in recent years, a decision that could explain why President Donald Trump recently named her as a Kennedy Center Honors recipient."

Perhaps jazz is woke.
"Broadcasting of jazz was forbidden as early as 1935. In the following years records of individual artists were banned; listening to non-German radio stations was criminalized. Orchestras had to follow strict rules like not exceeding 20 percent of the repertoire to jazz, and some areas outlawed swing dancing and dances."

Tell that to Dave Brubeck and Kenny G.
They're not in the same category musically.

I heard Benny Goodman described as "disgraceful". The way girls danced to his music, I'm not surprised. Looked quite naughty for that era.

Something people thought would never happen. The president takes part in the Kennedy Center Honors for the first time. He avoided it for his entire first term.

They will tape the honors program tomorrow at the Kennedy Center. and it will be shown on CBS TV later this year.

Here is a rundown of the artists who performed at this year's Kennedy Center Honors. The show will be broadcast later this year on CBS:

Vince Gill, Miranda Lambert, Brooks and Dunn, George Strait! Part of me wants to side with those who'd rather have seen country music A-listers boycott this event, but damn, that's just about the cream of the crop. I was prepared to see Lee Greenwood, Jason Aldean, Big & Rich and occasional country interloper Kid Rock on the guest list, and am relieved that they weren't.

George was one of the honorees. Vince & Miranda were there for him. George spoke on behalf of Vince when he received the CMA Lifetime Achievement award a few weeks ago. Garth Brooks and Cheap Trick were there for Kiss. But hardly anybody was there for Stallone.

Thanks, Capt. Obvious, for reminding me why George was there.

I'll agree with all this. I reluctantly accept Brooks & Dunn because there was a time when I didn't like them but they're at least better than what passes for country these days.

You listed him among the performers. That wasn't accurate. Of course he was there. That was obvious too.
I grouped him and the people who were there to salute/accompany him at the event. They were all the cream of the country crop. Never said they all performed. Do I have to spell everything out? Sometimes your omniscience falls short. I'm not sure we even have a difference of opinion here, but somehow you've managed to create one.

The key thing is they were there for George, not the president. They would have done the same thing regardless who was president.

On the other hand if the honoree was Lee Greenwood, I doubt you would have seen the same people.

The Kennedy Center board, made up of Trump appointees, voted to rename the center

Wonder if they have to pay him for naming rights. He doesn't usually allow the use of his name for free

The TV show will air December 23 on CBS:

They changed the name on the building today. So it's now the Donald J. Trump and John F, Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.

Seems to me if something is a memorial, shouldn't the person named be deceased???? Or did no one think about that?

I wonder if name changes like this one, and Gulf of America, are reversible with a democrat as the next president? My hope is for the next democrat president on the first day of office, to undo everything that's possible by executive order.
