KEXX Goes Adult Hits

I tuned my radio in the bathroom in to 103.9 this morning and it fell right into the toilet. I think that pretty much sums up radio in general and Phoenix in particular.

Eighteen FM presets on my truck radio and I can't even fill six up with anything decent.

My 103.9 is another generic radio format for a stale radio market. My 103.9 disguises itself as a unique radio station that will play anything Phoenix radio listeners want, but in reality, they will only play 80's music with a hint of 70's and 90's mixed in. They claim to be "uniquely designed to be created by you," but we all know that's not true. I bet if everyone voted to hear "That'll Be The Day" by Buddy Holly or anything pre-1970's, they wouldn't play it. Doesn't fit with their Generation X theme. Who knows, I could be wrong, but the "we'll play anything" moniker has been done before by 98.7 The Peak and we all know how that turned out.

With this latest move, any uniqueness about the Phoenix market has almost gone away. The only thing keeping me from listening to satellite radio 24/7 is our beloved Lumberyard (one of the most unique stations in the country just because they're so darned Kookie over there! ;D) and KTAR-FM in the mornings when they're all news. Besides those two little exceptions, the general rule is that Phoenix radio is a huge disappointment. No true oldies station on FM, no dance station, no alternative, no AAA, no all news, no smooth jazz, no classic country, no sports on FM. KWSS-LP is a great station, but where I live in the east valley, 106.7 is pure static. Sames goes for trying to pick-up 96.3 Real Country out of Wickenburg for that classic country fix. If the Lumberyard ever blows up and goes infomercials 24/7 or if KTAR decides to dump Ned and Connie for more Twitter talk, I'll be saying, "Check Please" to Phoenix radio!

You're not wrong. The "we'll play anything you want" thing is complete and utter bullshit. There isn't a single person sitting in front of Selector anywhere in the country who is going to re work their music log to fit in a few "requests" by listeners, even if they come from "social media" like Facebook or Twitter.

Only thing keeping me from jumping back to Satellite is (Yeah, I know this won't be popular.) HD Radio. KJZZ HD 2 and KMXP HD 2 both have AAA. Older Country is on KMLE HD2. I also agree with the KTAR and "The Lumberyard" Not much in the way of good radio down here in Phoenix anymore. :(

Kind of like how "U Pick It" (Listener Driven Radio) is The Peak's version of "Yes/No Radio" (remember that gimmick?). Certain songs are programmed to play when you choose them, and a lot of them aren't, no matter how many times you vote "up." You still can't be musically adventurous with it because the same 20 songs are on the list night after night, many times chosen by computer.

I must question how requests really work because I do remember requesting "this is your night" by Amber a few times for the 90's at 9 on Mix 96.9 and it eventually played within the one or two weeks of me requesting it. They also played "time after time" by Inoj.... Yes, you read correctly. For those who don't know your bass music, --> Inoj - "time after time" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxh3jtJ9wAU

Getting back to The Peak's "U Pick It," I just checked and the following songs were the so-called "top vote getters":

Katy Perry - "Hot N Cold"
Hot Chelle Rae - "Tonight Tonight"
Maroon 5 - "Moves Like Jagger"

Unless the cyber-savvy teen texters which make up the Mix/Kiss audience hijacked it, this can't be what their listeners want to hear. Much of the list are remnants from their '90s weekend.

I was afraid that the people who want to hear the same Lady Gaga song over and over again (or click "YES! YES! YES" on yes.com whenever they hear Adam Lambert) would ruin it for the rest of the listeners. Isn't they're slogan "It's All About the Variety?"

Sounds like Jerry Clifton former owner of 103.9 when they were KPTY and the Party station is doing the imaging/voice-overs for My 103.9!

The last song on Energy Arizona was Depeche Mode "Enjoy the Silence" and the last song on 103.9 as an alternative station was Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus" despite reports saying this was the first song on the new format; it wasn't. Classy picks by both stations.

Hopefully someone at least puts alt. rock onto their HD2 feed. Last time I was in LA I noticed that 98.7HD2 was doing active rock to at least do something to fill that foramat hole there.

I knew when that jackass Dave Pratt showed up things were going to change. He brought his own personal collection of "hits" with him, along with his sophomoric uncutting edge "humor."

At least Tucson has KFMA; but then again, Tucson has always been light years ahead of Phoenix in a lot of ways.

KEXX Less Variety, more repetition.

When will the high paid consultants figure it out. This formula isn't working. I had hoped that we'd hear something different here.

All the canned comments by supposed local listeners bragging about all these great songs on MY 103 9, when the station hasn't even been on for 24 hours seems just a tiny big fake.

If this station lasts longer than 2 years, I'll commit suicide.

What other ways? Just wondering. But yeah, suddenly KFMA doesn't seem so bad with its active/alt. hybrid format.

Non-radio wise: We collect all the Russell Pearces, Joke Arpaios and Janet Sewers of the State. A role model for retrograde thought. The further North you travel in AZ, the lower the collective IQ gets....

The new KEXX sounds terrible. I actually like KSLX and MIXX better. I would even listen to the peak over them. KWSS adn alternative way better.

The audio is more compressed than the leaf springs on our '76 Gremlin Levi's Special! All safe and recognizable music...but will My 103~Nine beat an i Pod for loyalty?

Alternative is on life support with the plug pulled in Chicago, New York, Vegas (1 of them), San Jose, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Boston (rimxhost WFNX is left),and Baltimore to name a few.

KROQ loses half their ratings at 10am. KBZT is steady low 1 share in San Diego, Live 105 is generally fighting for a 2.0 share. Comparing shares in PPM to diary is apples and oranges. 103.9 was programmed by the his people -same person who had the highest numbers ever so it wasnt him or his staff. The format is simply not viable in certain situations. Indie/L.A. listeners whined and complained too and the station has three times the listeners as the 4th Regional mexican choice in L.A. on a rimshot

Boston has 2 Alt stations including WFNX -- you forgot Greater Media's WBOS (Radio 92.9). CBS Radio brought HFS back to Baltimore on an HD side-channel that's being relayed on an FM translator, and the station's been hovering at around a 1-share 6+ -- not bad at all for a station that most people listen to on a 250-watt translator.

In San Diego, KBZT is dealing with a morning show that doesn't match the station, but to call their mid-1-share a bellwether for the format dismisses the fact that they're also in a direct competition with 91X, who's beating them by over a full share. If you combine the two stations' ratings, Alternative in San Diego is getting almost a 4-share 6+.

So if comparing PPM to diary is apples to oranges, how can you claim that KDLD has three times as many listeners as Indie 103.1 did? First of all, if you do actually look at the numbers, it's less than twice as many (which also can't be compared considering the formats are completely disparate and in two different languages); second of all, Indie went off the air only a couple of months after PPM was rolled out as unofficial "pre-currency" numbers in Los Angeles.
