KEXX goes Classic Rock

Nearby markets such as Vegas, LA and San Diego each have TWO alt. rock stations. Yes, Phoenix's demos are different than LA/SD however they're in the SW and not so much different that the format can't work. If someone flips to that format it could end up being a good thing as 103.9 had become essentially a classic alternative station and at a 0.8 rating, something had to be done. The format was burned out by this point on that frequency.

The void for alt. rock in Phx. isn't the 0.8 rating that 103.9 leaves behind but the void of what an alternative station could potentially fill if the format were executed properly and consistently.

But who, if anyone, will step up and do the format?

There seems to be a pattern developing here. The idea that:

There is a "void" in the Phoenix market for a certain format.

The format has been tried, but without passion or significant effort.

If there was just a station that "did it right," it would be wildly successful.

This is not the case.

Vegas really has one in KXTE although one of the Jelli rimshots runs an Alternative format.

KBZT Is rally challenged right now in SD

KYSR and KROQ are off since PPM launched and KROQ relies heavily on mornings.

This is said all the time in the Los Angeles market. People keep saying the AAA format should return because "no one did it right" or "the format needs a better signal." AAA can't work there because of demographics. I still can't believe we have two classic rock stations in LA. You guys have three!

Well this is indeed good news for KWSS. But as pointed out being LPFM, this leaves a good portion of the East Valley with no outlet for Alternative Music. Don't know if KVIT would tackle the Alternative for the East Valley, but could be an idea for them. Sure they could do a better job at it than X has done. Just a thought.

103.9 was not really "alt. rock" during its last two years; it was basically Classic Alt. The move to classic rock is confusing. It's a weaker signal than its rock competition and all it takes is a little tweak or two at KDKB and KSLX or even KUPD to block it.

I'm just glad that after all the pure chr rhythmic format attempts that we've had since the late 90's, KZON finally came and did it right.

Phoenix, the city of everything classis. LOL I hope they are an alternative to KSLX............. Maybe they can re-ignite a KSTM format.

Good riddance to KEXX and happy to see its confusing alt-nostalgia - let's call it what it was, ok? - put out of its misery, though I must say the timing of the announcement (same day Coachella lineup released) is a bit suspect. Since Pratt apparently has the freedom to go no-format, here's hoping he can play some Black Sabbath or countless other "classic rock" artists that inexplicably never get played on KOOL or KSLX - I definitely agree with the KSTM comment. I can't believe some of the asinine comments I'm seeing on the New Times message board: if hearing "Resistance" by Muse ten times a day makes you happy, I really don't know what to say. This is more great news for KWSS-LP, which is easily accessible from any smartphone.

Apparently, Sandusky registered my1039phoenix.com and pointed it to KSLX.com.

Just wondering: Will that radio broadcasting company ever change its name or re-brand so its not associated with the *alleged* (in case any lawers are on here, I said *alleged*) child molester from Penn State? I'd hate to work for a company with that moniker.

Jerry Gumpdusky was a coach at Penn State? ;D

I'm shocked that you all believe this! This screams Dave Pratt radio stunt to me.

KLL asked Edge Fan how you know and Edge Fan responded with a story on the New Times site which quotes a removed Tweet from Pratt's sidekick as a source?! Are you serious?! The post says no official confirmation from the station...but you all are going to believe this blindly?

Come on! This is where we are in journalism? Believing some removed tweet from a non-management staffer?

I could be TOTALLY wrong...but come Thursday, it's probably some Pratt stunt...since the info came from his sidekick.

WFNX/Boston. I listen daily, it is EXACTLY what alternative radio should be.

Low rated and financially unsuccessful?

FNX also suffers from a really poor signal. However, if it were so incredibly financially unsuccessful, you'd think the owners would've either flipped format, cut back on staff or sold the station a while ago since I don't think their business plan is to operate consistently in the red.

WEQX/Albany, NY is also a really good independent Alternative station (that coincidentally also has a crappy signal), they stream live at weqx.com.

Robin Nash posted a long farewell on her Facebook wall last night... in the interests of brevity and not violating the paste laws here, I will excerpt:

"Alternative rock is going away on this dial yes, an end of an amazing era....but you and I know it will always live inside of us forever. I will still see you at the concerts and I will still be blasting this music on my Ipod, Iphone, Spotify, Pandora, haha..wow, hello technology! Regardless of a musical change on this dial, we all are united through music.

"Change is inevitable. Especially in radio. The fact that Alternative Rock lasted on this dial as long as it has is a true blessing."

Well, I'm really bummed to learn it's true. (Even without an official word.)

And more bummed that they let some sidekick let the cat out of the bag. They shoulda just told Tara Hitchcock. ;)

And Manny Michaels, yes, whether or not you agree with it, journalists do work at the Phoenix New Times.
