KHHT now rhythmic oldies

Just looked at Hot's playlist on yes.com Mostly R&B from the late 60's to late 90's. No more current music since last Thursday. They sound more like KISQ in San Franscio and XHRM in SD. I wonder the change might be due to low ratings?

This could mean two things I think
Either:
1. They will become KFI-FM soon (On New Years?)
2. CC is tweeking this format and will keep it for a little while longer to try to get it to work

I have predicted for some time now that CC will flip KHHT to KFI-FM sooner or later, however there is still a good chance that it will, in fact, be later, rather than sooner.

I base this on their rumored reason for not flipping certain AM properties to date, which is that they will have to write down a fair amount of goodwill on the AM properties which will lead to a one-time loss each time an AM property is flipped to the FM dial. For the non-accountants out there, this essentially means that they are concerned with historical, paper losses which would be finally reflected in their current financial statements upon the flip at least as much as they are concerned with current market realities.

There is still a relatively strong argument that the revenue generated from the combined KFI and KHHT-FM is still greater than the revenue a simulcast KFI-AM and FM will bring. I have no inside information on this to say if this is true or not, but for the time being I suspect it is true. But I also suspect that at one point in the future, it will not be true anymore and CC will finally make the long-anticipated move.

Since CC is not in any hurry to take the goodwill impairment loss, I don't see them making the flip until after the first of the year at the earliest. Then it is just a matter of how long management wants to delay the inevitable.

What makes the whole situation a little bit unusual is that it is often the case that businesses often want to take their goodwill impairment write-downs in bad revenue years such as this one to get all the bad financial news and results into one year that will soon be in the past so that they can start fresh in the new fiscal year and hopefully start an up trend. That would be an argument FOR the flip before the end of the year.

What a great way to make this station sound even crapier!

CC, please, GET IT OUT OF ITS MISERY!

The reality is this station is geared towards latinas and that makes perfect sense. The legendary Art Laboe is on the station and is known for his oldies playlist. I think it's a perfect change for now. Whether KFI-FM happens. Who knows?

It has been Rhythmic Oldies for a long while now, a year or so. Some trades may have taken a while to flip the format description but Hot has been gradually letting go of their Urban AC programming for a long time. They probably went slow so they could hold on to as much of their urban audience as possible while trying to attract more latinos.

Years ago we had Mega 92.3 going against K-Earth 101 with more rhythmic oldies. I liked it as an oldies alternative so I'll be listening to see if the mega is back. :)

Oh trust us when we say KFI-FM is coming; maybe not right away, but change is inevitable and the tread has been growing for news/talk on FM.

All signs point to 92.3 becoming the talker, but that could change and perhaps CC could move KFI to another FM station.

I wonder, if this were to come to pass what would become of Art Laboe's show? Having it on KRTH is out of the question. Perhaps on KDAY?

I think once the change is made in our fair market and the ratings show news/talk can be sustained on FM I wonder if other CBS, Citadel, etc. consider moving one of their AM stations to FM?

Here we go with the KFI-FM folks again... ::)

Agreed, KFI-FM will not work.

Check what the format on the station that is generally #1 or #2 25-54, 35-49, 25-44 and 35-64 in San Francisco is.

I'm not saying KFI-FM won't happen someday or wouldn't work, but David you'd have to agree that San Francisco is a very different market demographically than Los Angeles.

Look at the ratings for KQED and KDFC. Those stations could never get those kind of numbers in L.A.

FM News/Talk has worked well in markets as different as New Orleans, Salt Lake City and Indianapolis, so there is no reason to doubt it would not do well in Los Angeles, but just because a format is doing great in the Bay Area doesn't mean it would be a success in the Southland.

I landed in LA from Australia on Saturday, and have been channel surfing since then. At one point when I landed on 92.3, I heard James Taylor - Fire & Rain. That was weird, as it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the music.

BJordan...once you realize that Radio is a business first and the stuff on the air is meaningless, you will understand why things happen. CC of all companies, care about the bottom line, over programming. They will make changes until they can make money, then stick with that.

Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the fact that they're embracing Motown hits and The Jackson's. Back in 2002 when Michelle Santusso was PD I would hear Joe I Wanna Know, LL Cool J Luv U Better, Dillema by Nelly Featuring Kelly Rowland and some 90's Urban such as Fugees Killing Me Softly Faith Evans You Used Love Me as well as Soon As I Get Home and Love Like This. KKBT played alot those hits enough when they were new. Michelle Santusso was PD at 92.3 The Beat from 1997-98 so you see why KHHT was playing Hip Hop.

How is this related to Motown and the Jacksons? Rhythmic oldies aren't the late 90's or later...They are motown 60's thru through the 80's, maybe some early 90's at best.

Good to know most people on this board aren't making these business decisions.

Hot is just focusing more which is pretty smart considering KTWV is trying to become them and KOST. San Francisco is not Los Angeles. L.A. is a terrible town for Sports and Talk radio.

Oh, and don't forget the census data - which is being implemented later this year and again in January will show another increase in English-speaking Hispanics (who frequent Hot), while the old white KFI auidence continues to decline.

In January, KHHT was the 9th ranked station Persons 25-54 (7th in English) - and ahead of CC's KBIG and KYSR. Why the heck would you blow up a station that outperforms two of your own to put on KFI-FM which was 15th in January.

More importantly, what would you put on 640 to replace KFI that could do $40 million+/year? Go ahead and figure that out.

I'm not saying they won't put KFI-FM on, I just sure wouldn't do it. Hot has a great brand that is only going to get stronger as the market continues to become more Hispanic dominant.

They might do a simulcast but isnt the 640 AM signal stronger than KHHT meaning the signal can go further? I never listen to the station but they do get good numbers. As far as a replacement only thing I can think of is spanish or maybe all comedy radio. Clear Channel already tried Adult Standards years ago.
