True..it is local in SLC, but what is the show's actual content/leaning? There's always room for a different point of view, even in SLC, even by a Bonneville owned station that may work in progressive/liberal Seattle, especially when you're targeting a younger demo. I can't say.... having never listened.searadiofreak said:While the KSL show is aimed younger, hipper, etc., it still is local. Not sure how you could simulcast that show in two such divergent markets. (SLC conservative, Seattle liberal would be one hindrance.)
No shortage of potential outlets (though I know little about existing schedules)...you've got KKOL, KTTH, KVI, KPTK all seeking "maintsream" talk talent vs. what they can get off the bird. Then there are the not-so-mainstream talkers and regional players carrying talk too.70radio said:...and if Reagan turns up at AM1090 opposite the venerable Ross (or even Monson), things could get interesting.

While the late Webb was an excellent talent his schtick did not appeal to those outside capitol hill and the many rest rooms in cocktail lounges and 7-11's. The KIRO tradition WAS that of a news authority. Webb and Hart took the Liberal Progressive Capitol hill position to its extreme. Being openly hostile and intolerant of anybody who disagreed with them.
My feeling is that generally while the Seattle area may lean liberal it is also at the same time very conservative and polite. The bombastic style of Webb and Hart made it difficult for polite Seattites and anyone who might be middle to right to listen for long.
Just like Rusty Humphries on KVI did not last long because he was always angry. an angry conservative. who wants to listen to all that anger?? the entertainment value better be damn good... and it wasn't in either the case of Humphries or on KIRO with Webb and Hart. The level of arrogance and confidence in ones own opinion comes off as suspect and emotionally manipulative to all but the true believers. While this appeals to the highly vocal extreme left, it seems brash to everyone else. Hardly a good strategy toward mainstream success.

LOL With all due respect to your programming philosophy, you've got to be kidding! Mike Webb and Erin Hart are MILD in comparison to certain AIR AMERICA hosts like Randi Rhodes, and KGO-AM hosts like Ray Taliaferro and Bernie Ward.
And, as for appealing to "the extreme left" on Capitol Hill (in Seattle, I presume, or are you referring to the Capitol Hill in Denver? Erin Hart subs for Jay Marvin in Denver.). Well - how could Webb get 12 shares - exclusively - with this so called "extreme left?" Impossible. Webb had a following over the entire survey area and beyond on the skywave.
Rusty Humphries angry? Hardly, when you compare him to Michael Savage.
At any rate, PASSION is what SELLS and gets ratings in talk radio. If passion comes out as humor, and gets ratings, great, and management is happy. If it comes out as anger, and gets ratings, great, and management is happy. It all comes down to profits, and Webb's show was sold out. As for the others, Karel, Talliaferro, Rhodes, all are award winning talk hosts because of their PASSION. Irregardless of whether you agree or disagree w/ their politics, you still listen, because they're entertaining.
