KIRO Shakeup

Don't forget Tony Miner's longform news show at 6pm, host to be named later for 7-10pm, and Frank Shiers installed as the 10p-1a host.

I bet they're dancing the jig at 140 4th Ave N.

They are idiots. They lost me when they got rid of Mike Webb. Then to add insult to injury they let Erin Hart go. Since then, the only time I tuned in was for Ron Reagan. As for Ron and Don, I loathe them...and why wouldn't I?

So, what are they going to do, turn KIRO in to another KTTH? Oh yeah, just what we need in this town. Boy that Frank Shiers really fills the old Mike Webb slot nicely. JEEBUS! Hey, why not fire everyone except for their afternoon God? He seems to be calling all the shots at KIRO anyway. Why not make it all Dori all the time, 24/7!

They may as well change their call letters to KRAP.

Think they might be making the shift to more of an All-News format?? To better compete with KOMO and prepare for an FM simulcast?

They gave Frank Shiers a regular slot?
I suppose that's good for those listeners who want to him incessantly blather about driving his daughter Sara Beth around when she's having trouble sleeping.
Who's making decisions over there? Not that Vinnie was any great shakes but good god Frank Shiers?
Are they TRYING to drive listeners away?
And what's the deal with dropping the Newsradio slogan and cutting back on the news?
Are they now strictky or mainly a talk station? albeit a crappy talk station.
I don't get it but i'm sure the KOMO folks are happy
*shaking head Frank F'ng Shiers! - WTF ?

KIRO will need to bring in some serious talent from out of state, in my opinion. And this precludes any thoughts of KIRO-FM as they first need to get their own house in order. I think they need to get back to old-fashioned news and weather, in that same old KIRO (Bonneville--KSL) way. And I agree Ron & Don are not the answer. Everytime I tune in I cringe....one because Ron sounds like he has cotton in his mouth, and secondly, they don't sound like university-educated talent. They don't sound crisp and concise, like Dave Ross. So there is an inherent conflict. Do you go for the lunch-bucket plumber or electrician as they do now, or will they aim higher to reach a broader, but maybe more educated crowd and go after KUOW's audience? KUOW has consistantly been the #1 rated station in this market.
In other words, I think KIRO has completely underestimated this place. We have a higher than average number of degreed (AA,BA, Masters, PHD's) listeners what with Boeing, Microsoft, WAMU, and at the U of W, among others. We read more than many markets. As the regions' primary Emergency Broadcast outlet, we deserve a top-flight station. Alot of people would be depending upon KIRO in an emergency. KIRO has violated a public trust, plain and simple. I am very, very disappointed.

Is Tony out...am I reading that correctly? Hope not.

LBB, which thread are you referring too?

Was tongue-in-cheek reference to the thread about K-UN-T and KWTF being assigned as valid call letters (because system now assigns calls thru computer without manual review). Sorry 'bout being so esoteric!!

So what is the new slogan, if any?

BTW, don't know if this is even being considered on KIRO, but KSL Salt Lake (where the new PD came from) installed a hip, entertainment-oriented evening news/talk block aimed at the 18-34 demo, of which there are many in SLC...one big difference, KSL simulcasts on FM too.

The new positioner is News Talk 710 KIRO. Makes sense…they do more talk than news. Word has it Ron Reagan was offered 7p-10p, but turned it down---don’t blame him. Evenings are a definite demotion for a talent of his caliber. Tough to lose a guy with such name recognition and incredible connections for lining up guests on his show. Too bad he wasn’t offered Ross’ slot, but Ross just signed a new contract. The shift changes for Monson and Ron and Don were necessary to allow Tony Minor’s “Big Story” from 6p-7p. Good idea---it showcases Tony’s talents and allows the KIRO’ news team to get more in depth with the day’s top stories. They also will air excerpts of interviews of select guests on Ross’, Monson’s and the Ron and Don shows. CBS is still around. When there’s a national story of significance, KIRO uses their actualities.
Searadiofreak…you could be close. There is talk that KIRO may consider a simulcast of KSL’s, as you say, hip, entertainment-oriented evening news/talk block aimed at the 18-34 demo. In the meantime, Brownie and Shiers will somehow share the 7p-1a slot. Dunno why New York Vinnie’s out. Good or bad moves?? Time will tell. When the M’s are done and if Reagan turns up at AM1090 opposite the venerable Ross (or even Monson), things could get interesting.

While the KSL show is aimed younger, hipper, etc., it still is local. Not sure how you could simulcast that show in two such divergent markets. (SLC conservative, Seattle liberal would be one hindrance.)

True..it is local in SLC, but what is the show's actual content/leaning? There's always room for a different point of view, even in SLC, even by a Bonneville owned station that may work in progressive/liberal Seattle, especially when you're targeting a younger demo. I can't say.... having never listened.

No shortage of potential outlets (though I know little about existing schedules)...you've got KKOL, KTTH, KVI, KPTK all seeking "maintsream" talk talent vs. what they can get off the bird. Then there are the not-so-mainstream talkers and regional players carrying talk too.

They keep Ron & Don and lose Reagan??? Unbelievable.

The PM drive show on 710 sound like they came from WWF TV. Pro wrasslin, yeah! Hardly the image a market leading News Talker wants dont ya think?

A lineup of Morning News/Ross 9-12/News 12-1p/Reagan 1 -3/Monson 3 - 7/Ron & Don would have made lots more sense. I should be making PD bucks!!

I have to believe there will be more changes coming soon to KIRO, Bonneville is just getting started fixing this station.

One of the best moves in KIRO history IMHO was the cancellation of Mike Webb and Erin Hart. While the late Webb was an excellent talent his schtick did not appeal to those outside capitol hill and the many rest rooms in cocktail lounges and 7-11's. The KIRO tradition WAS that of a news authority. Webb and Hart took the Liberal Progressive Capitol hill position to its extreme. Being openly hostile and intolerant of anybody who disagreed with them.

My feeling is that generally while the Seattle area may lean liberal it is also at the same time very conservative and polite. The bombastic style of Webb and Hart made it difficult for polite Seattites and anyone who might be middle to right to listen for long.

Just like Rusty Humphries on KVI did not last long because he was always angry. an angry conservative. who wants to listen to all that anger?? the entertainment value better be damn good... and it wasn't in either the case of Humphries or on KIRO with Webb and Hart. The level of arrogance and confidence in ones own opinion comes off as suspect and emotionally manipulative to all but the true believers. While this appeals to the highly vocal extreme left, it seems brash to everyone else. Hardly a good strategy toward mainstream success.

<<<<<<<<<<RESPONSE>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

LOL With all due respect to your programming philosophy, you've got to be kidding! Mike Webb and Erin Hart are MILD in comparison to certain AIR AMERICA hosts like Randi Rhodes, and KGO-AM hosts like Ray Taliaferro and Bernie Ward.

And, as for appealing to "the extreme left" on Capitol Hill (in Seattle, I presume, or are you referring to the Capitol Hill in Denver? Erin Hart subs for Jay Marvin in Denver.). Well - how could Webb get 12 shares - exclusively - with this so called "extreme left?" Impossible. Webb had a following over the entire survey area and beyond on the skywave.

Rusty Humphries angry? Hardly, when you compare him to Michael Savage.

At any rate, PASSION is what SELLS and gets ratings in talk radio. If passion comes out as humor, and gets ratings, great, and management is happy. If it comes out as anger, and gets ratings, great, and management is happy. It all comes down to profits, and Webb's show was sold out. As for the others, Karel, Talliaferro, Rhodes, all are award winning talk hosts because of their PASSION. Irregardless of whether you agree or disagree w/ their politics, you still listen, because they're entertaining.
