KJLH is so unfocused right now.

Dayparting MAY save the station, BUT they also have to learn to program more to than just an African-American audience. I realize the station has a rich history with African-Americans, but sometimes history doesn't pay the bills. Between 9am and 2pm weekdays, play more R&B/Urban focused tracks (with no Hip-Hop), then between 2pm until 10pm focus on Rhythmic R&B and Hip-Hop music (stuff that is played on Power 106 and KIIS-FM 102.7). Then later in the evening, a slow jam show. I am not saying this is a perfect formula, but it has to be better than what they are doing now. On Sundays, they could have an R&B old school show. Saturdays could be rhythmic all day long.

I'm not disagreeing at all. L.A. urban market can't be black-exclusive at all since even back in the day Hispanics were apart of the culture in the region. The musical culture of the region is eclectic and unique, so rhythmic singles and hits mixed with the core of hip-hop, R&B, and soul music would work. As said, it would be dayparted.

If they switch the format the from Urban AC to Mainstream Urban I'll be mighty grateful. I could see it now. But why is the branding called Radio Free.

They need a PD and better on air talent in a hurry. Listened to Steve Harvey this morning and the local breaks were absolutely horrible! They had some amatuer guy doing what was supposed to be a sports report and it sounded so small market it was almost laughable. Lon Mc Q in the afternoon says the same thing everyday, and really sounds dated. I'm pulling for them, but it sounds like it's on it's last leg and nobody in management cares anymore. Is it for sale? Blow it up, change call letters and start over.

I too wonder why they are using "Radio Free" in their branding. Sounds like a name a pirate station would use...

the guy doing the sports was the P.D Andrae Russell so that speaks volumes why the station is the pits. they have no clue he has no clue and ownership is lost in space they should just throw in the towel.

Lon McQ needs to retire too. How old is he. He has on there since 1978 when KJLH debuted. I always thought he was alot younger than what he really was judging by his voice until I saw his bio on the website. Kevin Nash I know is young probably approaching 40. He wasn't always on KJLH, previously he was on KKBT hosting The Night Beat from 1997-2001 then he came to KJLH in 2002-Present.

Lon Mc Q has got to be at least 60 years old and nothing more than a liner card jock, with no liners! I swear he says the same exact thing everyday. He really sounds shaky, like he's still nervous after all these years at the same station! Wow. Absolutely no content. If he were a horse, he be either glue or dog food! Please put him out of his misery. Except for Kevin Nash, the staff sucks bigtime!!! Black/Urban radio deserves better in a market this size.

Well you better enjoy it while its still on the air its the last urban formatted station in town

KACE FM gone
KFGJ FM gone

LA cant support a Urban or Urban AC station anymore. If you want to hear a R&B station in LA you gotta appeal to all races. Thats why KKBT (radio one version screwed up) is not on. Hate to say it because Im african american too and enjoyed the station as well.

According to KJLH's Wikipedia page they changed to Urban Contemporary because of L.A. losing KKBT and KDAY moving to classic hip hop. They're mainly trying to draw in the 18-34 crowd who will listen to current Hip Hop & R&B.

Lon's okay. When he's on the air it does sound like KJLH. I aint feeling Nautica during the day. Don Amiche sounds like a ass sometimes funny but an ass. I like Tammi Mac but sometimes shes over the top. As long as Stevie Wonder is still alive and breathing. These jocks will have jobs and the station will still be around. Im just glad they didnt flipped to urban gospel which was rumored a few years back.

I don't think Don Amiche is very funny, but he has talent, but would much better off as a solo act. He has a general market sound, is a good jock. Just needs direction. Tammi, for some odd reason is trying to sound too sister girl country ghetto. She actually said " 50 cent 'quadripled' his money from an investment! Quadripled?? What??? I'm so tired of the "he be dis and dat. Why do she talk like dat? She be sounding ignant. They must be emulating Steve Harvey, only Steve's grammar, or lack thereof is only an act. I got it! How about some major market talent for a change. Might help.

The problem is nobody has thought about doing like KMEL up the coast in SF Bay Area, and appeal to both blacks, Hispanics, and Asians within the 18-34 demographic group in LA since Radio One took over the former KKBT. One would think with a low black percentage like LA (7.5% in SF), KMEL would be dead but it figured to get both black and Hispanic personalities on air along with musical programming that includes more West Coast and cross-cultural Bay Area hip hop (Far East Movement, Erk da Jerk, Kafani, E-40, The Cataracs, New Boyz) and some local R&B (Goapele, Rod) so it would continue to thrive even in the PPM environment. An urban in the LA market has to find out the L.A. hip-hop-oriented youths of those 3 groups listens to while trying to maintain some R&B lean during middays and late nights to pull in the core urban music listeners (25-40). It's all about balance and cross-cultural appeal, but at the moment KJLH isn't that because they are exclusively targeting blacks. If somebody knew what they were doing an urban could thrive and be "the Station with No-Color Lines" again.

KKBT displaced listeners moved on to other stations. Hispanics have KXOL, KIIS and KHHT which made up half of KKBT's listeners. African Americans either moved on to KDAY for hip hop KTWV, KHHT and KJLH. Some just gave up on radio all together and play cd's or ipods.

KJLH should just play 90's and current R&B and stop play todays wack ass Hip Hop. It gives me the chills when they play Black and Yellow. They can play mainstream R&B but leave the hip hop out.

They should just play back in the day rap/urban music instead of the currents made up of the station. I'm a former KKBT listener who has now moved on to KDAY for Hip Hop.

Not to mention their Saturday night Mixshow is not even good anymore. The only thing I give them credit on is their sunday gospel music. I think they should end it by 3pm like it use to be a long time ago. Ohh and get rid of that Dominiuqe Deprimia girl not really feeling her. I miss Carl Nelson and Jacquie Stephens. Too bad shes now in Chicago.

The saturday mixshow sucks!!! Just a bunch of wack mixes, and shout outs to their friends. Too many people in the studio, and they talk too much. Just play the music. Do they actually think that show can compete with the mixers on KPWR, KDAY, KIIS, KXOL??? Why would anyone listen? The host sounds like the oldest guy up in the club. Again, the talent on that station just isn't major market, with the exception of Kevin Nash. No community presence anymore, no promotions, bland production, wack website. The PD took a pretty good station and destroyed it. Carl Nelson was always entertaining and pro active in the community. It was a full service station, playing the hits. I hope they sell it to a real broadcaster. Maybe it can be revived, but they certainly have their work cut out for them.
