It's the horrible programming. It's possible to play hip hop and R & B, but it takes a talented PD/MD and staff to make it work. They simply don't have a target audience. What's their branding statement, 'Radio Free'? What does that mean? 'Total Music Expression' of course. Now what does that mean? Who knows? They don't seem to be able to adjust with the market like other stations. KJLH never had a world class signal, but still had decent ratings even with more compettition in the format. Hell, they don't even change the sweepers for months. They even used to have a small outdoor marketing campaign, and TV spots!!! Listen to the audio processing compared to KDAY. BTW, Does anyone know what their annual billing is? The station can't be making $$$. Kjlh will always have an adult image in this market. Why would an 18-24 year old even have it locked in, with Power, Amp, Kiis, and Kday to choose from? That's their parents and even grandparents station. You think that playing more rap and hip hop on weekends, with old jocks is gonna attract young listeners, or blow off their old core listeners? Steve Harvey actually did better on KDAY! You can't blame the demise of KJLH on the signal, black audience migratiion, or PPM. The station simply needs to seriously reposition itself. A new PD is a start.

Just needs direction. Tammi, for some odd reason is trying to sound too sister girl country ghetto. She actually said " 50 cent 'quadripled' his money from an investment! Quadripled?? What??? I'm so tired of the "he be dis and dat. Why do she talk like dat? She be sounding ignant. They must be emulating Steve Harvey, only Steve's grammar, or lack thereof is only an act. I got it! How about some major market talent for a change. Might help.
I laughed out loud when I read this post. I do not care for Tammi but Don Amiche has potential.
I still like Lon McQ. He is the only thing left of the "old" KJLH so I would not want to see him go unless they bit the bullet and reformulated their whole presentation.
I do not know what to think of the new music mix. Urbans around the country are playing more R&B and Urban ACs are playing more hip-hop so there does seem to be a gradual convergence of the two formats. As another poster said, day-parting would be a more logical way to do it though.

then COX took over the station in the late 90's
then it got sold to a Hispanic Radio Company.
Now its a Spanish Oldies station.

KDAY actually has a slightly better signal due to the antenna location, which has less shadowing than KJLH which is a bit farther back on the hill.
And, of course, KDAY has a format that is much more likely to appeal to Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites. KDAY has about 45% Hispanic listeners, and 25% non-Hispanic white / Asian /Other, with 30% Black. KJLH is 96% Black, so the cume potential is vastly lower for KJLH as there are only about 800,000 12+ Blacks in LA, while there are 4,600,000 Hispanics 12+.

That was in the diary. While most stations grew in cume in the PPM, the limited audience potential for KJLH made it go down, as TSL was more compressed for everyone.
PPM is the biggest issue they faced. The last pre-PPM book was a 1.2, while the first 3 PPM books averaged 0.5. They lost 70% of the AQH due to methodology. What was their pre ppm cume? TSL? KKBT was still black, and so was KDAY at that point What % of their audience was black then? What % of the hispanic sample is exclusively spanish speaking? and whitin their coverage area? Just a few questions out of curiosity.
Does anyone know what their annual billing is? The station can't be making $$$.
Around $5 million, which if costs are contained could throw off $1.5 million to $2 million.

AM FM listener said:KDAY is only 30% Black? That is surprising to me. So, it's not really "urban" but rather some form of "rhythmic" huh? KPWR probably has a similar ethnic composition, no?

mandella said:Do you think KDAY will actually go 'live' with the ownership change? Might give them a bit of a spike don't ya think? At least a 'live' and local morning show might enhance their brand. Without the huge dept that Magic was saddled with, and a positive cash flow, perhaps they'll take the next step and become a bigger player in the market. The potential is certainly there, with a combined cume of around 1.5 million. Any thoughts?

Just a guess, but I smell Indie... You could be right.
