KJLH is so unfocused right now.

Some Urban AC play that song so its nothing new. BoBo who produces the morning show with Adai and Big Pee Wee came over from KDAY. I actually meet a few staffers at the Taste of Soul last year. Very nice people. You have to remeber the dj's dont control the music its the PD. The jocks are just doing their job like everyone else. Im pretty sure the staff is aware with the concern of the music but its nothing new. This station has never been a ratings winner and hardly anyone notices the frequency. Listeners pass it to get to 102.7FM

Back in 1998 you hear Still Not A Player on Power 106, 92.3 The Beat and KIIS-FM. While on KJLH you would hear Gerald Levert's song called Thinkin' Bout It.

That's because that song was consider mainstream hip hop then it crossed over to pop. KJLH would play the R&B verison with Joe just singning it. Times have changed and that song is 12 years old. Depends what market you live in some Urban AC will touch a few Hip Hop tracks. Kayne West Golddiger was added to a few Urban AC's. The same with Nelly and Kelly Rowlands Dilemma.

The R&B version came out before Big Pun's version.

Yes it did but Power focuses on current music so the songs you mention from the 90's and early 2000's are not in rotation. Usher, Far East Movement, and Drake are the main artist that get airplay. Power use to have a Old School show at 12noon but now its gone. I remeber Power used to play Old School Sunday evenings. I like listening to Power Tools when Im leaving the club Saturday night

Life Goes On. KJLH will never be the same. Power 106 Where Hip Hop Dies. The only good station is KDAY.

@WDB2003 Guess what else was added to Urban AC outlets in the early 2000's I know what you want by Busta Rhymes & Mariah Carey.

Depends on the market you live in if the song appeals to their listeners. I was in Kansas City during that time around 2002-2003. Our Urban station KPRS played it but I never heard it on our Urban AC station KMJK during that time.

Well I guess L.A. is the ghetto radio market. So is the radio market in NY.

New York is actually good for Urban radio because there are more african americans in New York City compared to Los Angeles. But agreed companies need to get their s### together.

You're right urban radio in NY is better. Out there we have Hot 97, Power 105.1 two stations playing Hip Hop & R&B. We also have 107.5 WBLS, 98.7 Kiss Fm two Urban AC's. I have a chance to listen to those Urbans in NY, very focused playlists.

Detroit is also another choice
Urban WJLB FM, Hot 102.7
Urban AC WMXD Mix 92.3, Kiss 105.9 WDMK, 107.5 WPGR
Rythnmic WDTW 106.7 The Beat of Detroit and CHR Rythnmic lean 98.7 AMP Radio

Atlanta is one of the best
Urban V103, Hot 107.9
Urban AC Magic 107.5/97.5 Urban Oldies Kiss 104.1
Rythnmic CHR Wild 105.7

I have to agree with you on Detroit. WDTW seems to be on fire since they evolved from Rhythmic AC and is even beating sister station WKQI.

Washington, DC is also a good urban market: 2 hip-hops (WKYS and WPGC) and two r&b's (WHUR and WMMJ).

I wouldn't call WKYS or WPGC "hip-hop" stations at all. They are both urban contemporaries with balanced R&B & Hip-Hop song selections these days although WPGC is leaning more "churban/rhythmic crossover".

If you are looking for an all-around "full-service urban" station that would be V-103 in Atlanta. It spins old school and contemporary R&B during the "Quiet Storm" slow jams Sunday-Thursdays from 10pm-2am.

Sounds very focused.

Your right but there still classifed as Urban stations. I was just comparing Urban radio in different markets rather than ours.

Yep Jay Towers from New Jersey is the PD of WDTW. He's also the morning show host on Hot AC WNIC Fresh 100.3 in Detroit and he VT's for WISX Mix 106.1 in Philly. The station sucked as Rythnmic AC but its more current. Dertroit is a Urban city so it made sense to go in that direction. Radio One's Hot 102.7 signal is not that strong so at least it gives the listeners another choice.

I'm not doubt them being "urban" stations at all. However, when he called them "hip-hop" that wasn't not true since both of them seem to vie for the "urban contemporary" rubric of balancing R&B and hip-hop than most hip-hop-oriented "mainstream urban" stations these days.
