KJR-FM flips to...

They crave an abrupt format change for several weeks? I guess the KVI thing is okay, then, with the music weekdays, and talk shows on the weekend?

A couple of posts suggested that KJR-FM flippping to all christmas music was a dumb move on Jay Kelly's part. But remember a couple of things; Jay has been in Seattle for years and he was not prone to doing dumb things at KBSG. Second; this is Clear Channel and it would not be out of character for them to simply tell Jay "this is what you're going to do" in which case he may have shrugged and said to himself "okay".

Jay Kelly is a class act and has proven himself over the years.
Radio isn't about creativity and 'show biz' anymore, it's about
'what have you done for me lately.' er...what have you done this month,
this week, this hour, this break - thanks to the ppm.
If you have a long range plan for a station, sorry need to get traction sooner or you're out!
We are in the 'fast food' days of radio....unfortunately our brains don't adapt like that.

One of these days the 'dark hand of corporate dictatorship over programming'
will end. Maybe then we can have our radio stations back.

Yes.

While exaggerated, there's some truth to that for some management types. But the key people understand the flaws in PPM.

To the contrary. Everything in life is about instant gratification. We wait impatiently at the grocery store if there's a line of more than two or three people (and heave mercy on the soul of the person who has 12, not 10, items in the express lane). Then there are people who will wait in parking lots to get a spot closer to the store, even though the waiting for the other person to move out is about two or three times longer than the walk from the already open spot 50 feet away. Remember when going to a McDonald's drive-thru was simply about getting to the same window where you would order, pay for, and receive your meal? Not anymore, now they're even talking about outsourcing the drive-thru ordering to someone halfway across the world in order to speed things up (Google that, seeing how McDonald's is a fascinating read).

Contrary to what you believe, the public airwaves still belong to the public. It just doesn't play what you like to hear, that's all.

Maybe I'm crazy but $50 says they go right back to what they were doing.

You're a smart person.

Good luck getting everybody else on this board to believe your feeling about KJR-FM.

So any bets on the format that KJR-FM will be changing to post xmas??

Well it looks like they'll be doing whatever they're doing, with a new Program Director.

So are you saying Mr. Kelly was turfed today? Wouldn't surprise me in the least. CC is known for riffing people just before Christmas and honestly, 95.7 could be programmed by an intern.

what corporate cookie cutter format couldnt be programmed by an intern? worst case scenario, just copy cat what the same lame cookie cutter format is doing in another market. all you have to work with is a few hundred songs, and a rearrangement of the deck here and there. hell, who even needs an intern. thankgoodness for XM 40 DEEP TRACKS, and OUTLAW COUTRY XM 12, for my ears!

Oldies.

No surprise there. Fisher blew yet ANOTHER golden opportunity. They had a month to blitz the market and pick up the disenfranchised KJR listeners. After Saturday, KVI might as well just hang it up.

So far all this is all speculation and rumor, unless i'm mistaken has there been anything officially announced about KJR FM changing format after the holidays?

I really think KJR FM is just changing their Program Director and that's it; I think they're going to stick with the format they already have personally and that we'll get the same boring KJR 95.7 in 2011.

If I had my way I would love a return to the Superhits of the 60s and 70s format for KJR FM, plus the Lost 45s segments; I heard an aircheck of 95.7 circa October 2002 and I was blown away by how good KJR FM was once upon a time.

It would be nice if they would return to that type of format

KJR will become the national Classic Hit/Oldies format, as CC has done in multiple other markets. (including Portland to the south) This is just an adjustment from where they were before and will probably call themselves Oldies or Good Times, Great Oldies to show the change. The hope is they will pick up more women to go with their men. Hurts krwm if they are right, but helps Jack and kzok as men look for places to go.

KVI would not have beaten them either way. They are competing for available audience on the AM dial with lots of news, traffic, weather and much older music than Clear Channel's typical Oldies/Classic hits station. KVI was the fourth ranked talk station, the question for them is will they do better as the second Oldies station? The question for KJR is will they do better as Jay Kelly's male Classic hits format, or Clear Channel's Oldies/Classic Hits format? Time will tell. KVI ranked 32nd when they flipped. KJR-FM ranked number one in cume, top six 25-54 and top three 35-64. KVI needs to finish 30th and they win, KJR has a much higher bar to beat, set by Jay Kelly. Does make you wonder why they changed?
