KMPS is now 94.1 The Sound

Not the easiest to read, but here's (nearly) everything that Seattle's new 94.1 has played so far.

The average song year is 1986.32, making it perfect for a broad, dynamic demographic. From the recently retired, all the way to the not-so-recently retired. Way to go Entercom!

9:11:56 AM RICHIE, LIONEL Hello

I'm sorry to anyone who doesn't like my post...but I love it!...as long as it's not a stunt, 94.1 will now be my #1 preset whenever I visit Seattle on vacation or on errands.

I've listened a couple of times yesterday and this evening, and it’s not bad. It’s not something I could listen to at work or anything I'd want all-the-time, but there are times I want a softer and mellower sound that’s not smooth jazz or beautiful music. The Sound fills that pretty nicely (as do The Breeze in SF and WEZI Jacksonville), at least so far.

It's sad anyways to see over 40 years of the KMPS brand finish its long run. My parents listened to 94.1 as long as I can remember. But time marches on.

I agree that times change, but this move still doesn’t make much sense to me. Entercom, however, generally knows what it’s doing, and I'll agree the playlist sounds very well-researched and curated. One of my biggest concerns is over the longevity of The Sound. Killing the wrong station can cause a lot of negative PR and backlash. Entercom should know this better than most operators. It picked up the format and staff of KYYS “KY-102” discarded by American Radio Systems and rode “99.7 KY” to prominence in Kansas City. The station that replaced KYYS at 102.1 barely lasted more than a year and struggled to take off due to the bad PR it received. Once KY leveled off again about 10 years after Entercom brought it back, it had trouble getting a replacement format to stick on 99.7.

I seriously hope you didn't have to listen to all that to get this log! But it is good to see a wider view. I agree, it does appear there is some logical thinking into this mix. While they appear to be running mostly 80's and 90's, they throw in some 2000's at precisely the right interval. Looks like a direct aim at 35-49 women.

I'm not a woman, and I find the mix so far to be quite good. It reminds me of listening to KXXO back in the '90s. The big question is...how long can this format last? Will it evolve, or will the 'novelty' wear off in a year or two? Time (and ratings in the desired demographic) will tell.

Did you really need to quote the whole post?

There doesn't seem to be much backlash. A few sad social media comments, but no riots. From what I've read, far more people are pissed off at KVRQ's flip than KMPS's.

I chalk it up to warning. KMPS gave their listeners some clues. KVRQ's listeners were given ZERO.

While social media is a lousy place to measure market-wide sentiment in the first place, KMPS told their Country fans if they wanted Country, go to The Wolf. There are likely many KMPS listeners at The Wolf who have no idea the change happened.

This isn't the 1970s or 1980s, the large scale produced opener is just something radio geeks care about. To most of today's listeners, it's just an interruption to the music. What Marc Kaye did was smart, because there was another station ready to flip to Country and he beat them.

And there are not going to be any riots over a radio station format flip, listeners will just move on to other options be it a Seattle radio station or some other source.

Sarcasm: You either get it or you don't.

96-5 The Bull (sh*t)

I was really disappointed in the way KVRQ launched, I would have at least waited until the top of the hour, then fire the new legal for the new format, rather than just cut the audio.

That's inside thinking. Listeners don't care. Plus they got it up and running before anyone else could make a similar decision which was smart.

It is interesting that the playlist shows some fairly recent songs, such as "Hello" from Adele, "All of Me" from John Legend, "Stay with Me" by Sam Smith and several Kelly Clarkson titles. Yet there are no Beatles songs. So the cut off is clearly the 1970s, even though it goes up to 2017. Marvin Gaye's "Mercy, Mercy Me" may be the oldest song I saw.

Many artists deemed too wimpy or uncool by most mainstream AC stations are not represented. No Olivia Newton-John, Barry Manilow, Anne Murray, Neil Diamond, Tony Orlando, even if they had post 1970 or even post 1980 hits. Yet a few do sneak in. I heard Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton "Islands in The Stream" this week. I see Dionne Warwick, Bette Midler, Air Supply, Michael Bolton, Captain & Tennille, all artists banned from most AC play. I see the Barbra Streisand-Barry Gibb collaboration "Woman in Love" did get aired. But no solo Streisand.

A few non-hits that are great songs got in. Israel Kamakawiwa'ole "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" got aired. Someone mentioned earlier "One Love" from Bob Marley. A song I never heard before, Niall Horan "This Town," is a really great tune. How did I never hear this before? Yet Wikipedia says it peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100, so while it fits the sound of The Sound, I'd say I'm not the only one who doesn't recognize it.

They're programming to a demographic. I know people who fit that playlist. They're old enough to know songs from the 70s, but they also like current music. This isn't classic hits, it's soft AC. There was a time when soft AC played currents. This is keeping with that tradition.

You're wrong Gregg. I heard Olivia Newton-John yesterday, 'Hopelessly Devoted to You.' That hasn't been heard on Seattle radio since what, 1983? I haven't heard anything from the late '60s, but I wonder if Brown Eyed Girl would be fitting for a Soft AC.

You are correct Initially they had a mix of soft rock and standards (Sinatra, Bennett etc) and it has morphed in recent years.

94.1 is non-directional and has the strongest signal (HAAT+ERP) in Puget Sound
